Top 5 Super Metroid Bosses
Super Metroid is one of our favorite games here at Old-Wizard for reasons that are too numerous to list here. One of the reasons why the game was so great was because of how memorable and nefarious all the bosses were. This was especially true of the bosses of Super Metroid which were of course augmented by the most freighting soundtrack in the 16-bit era. Super Metroid was full of bosses and mini-bosses galore, so there was a large group of characters to choose from. Some of the difficult omissions were the beastly Crocomire and the evasive Spore Spawn. Nonetheless, we feel these next 5 bosses were the best in the series and will be remembered throughout all of gaming lore.5. Kraid
It is true that Kraid can be defeated in less than 4 seconds as so many people have showed off on Youtube, but the first time having to face Kraid specifically in Super Metroid, you were shitting your pants. The room before with the tense music and the parasites eating away at the dead bounty hunters body from, who we assume has been killed by Kraid, frightened the hardest of video game hearts. When Kraid leaped to his full size you we’re left wondering how in the hell you could defeat something this monstrous. The Nintendo creators played amazingly on the video gamer’s emotions by making the whole scene as fearful as possible. The sheer size of Kraid was different from the previous Kraid in Metroid 1. It was just so ironic that Kraid was much easier to destroy in Super Metroid.4. Draygon
Draygon wasn’t as easy as Kraid, but he sure as hell was scary looking, if not more than Kraid. Look into the eyes of this under water beast and you saw an intensity not seen in any boss from any Metroid after it. Try to beating this orbital moving beast with just your weapons and missiles and you would be on a seemingly never ending battle against a demon who could spore out his own kind, like an immigrant just learning about welfare. Anyone who knows Super Metroid inside and out knows how to really destroy the dreaded Draygon, but that you (Samus) would lose half your energy doing it. Let Draygon grab you and have your grapple beam ready. Keep shooting it until it comes close to the electrical sparks on the side of the screen and then you would fry this bastard to hell. It’s was an absolute relief defeating Draygon.3. Phantoon
It has been said in Metroid Lore than Phantoon was the ghost of the original Mother Brain from Metroid 1. Regardless of whether or not this is true, Phantoon was much more difficult than the static Mother brain from Metroid 1. You met Phantoon on the broken down ship on the outside of Crateria. This whole level freaked you out because all the enemies were invincible, as was Phantoon for the most part, making him one of the most difficult bosses in the Metroid series. On top of this, he would scare the shit out of you when you needed to hit him. He would appear blaring on your screen with his eye wide open with blue flames around him. It was here that you needed to nail the sucker in the eye with Super Missiles. Other than this, you had to evade this free floating Ghost with an enormous amount of hit point. Beating Phantoon was yet another memorable accomplishment from one of the most memorable games of all time.2. Rebuilt Mother Brain
This is not the static Mother Brain we’re talking about. This is the rebuilt Mother Brain specifically designed by the best Space Pirates on Zebes to be almost impossible to destroy. When this thing developed after you knocked out the static Mother Brain Head, it would turn into a prehistoric beast with venom coming from it’s mouth that looked like liquid laser. You knew you would need help in fighting this final boss of Super Metroid, and you got it from the baby Metroid you saved in your previous mission on SR388. The grown up baby metroid would attach itself to the brains of the beast but still not be able to defeat her. Luckily for Samus, the worn-out and destroyed baby Metroid would die right on top of you giving you the ultimate laser beam that smashed the new Mother Brain to pieces. As one of the most impressive finales to any game ever made, it was this reconstructed Mother Brain that made it so suspenseful.1. Ridley
Ridley is the ultimate boss in the whole Metroid series. He is the Space Pirate who commands everything, including the restructuring of Zebes after it’s first downfall to Samus and the new form of Mother Brain. You find Ridley in the depths of Norfair in Metroid 1 where it would take an innumerable amount of missiles to destroy. In Super Metroid though, he would take on a more beastly form being able to pick you up with his hind legs and smash you down to the ground. It would take even more missiles to destroy him this time around and it wasn’t just Norfair that you were traveling through to get to this impenetrable space pirate, it was Ridley’s own kingly lair of ancient ruins. You weren’t just fighting Ridley but the whole idea of a beast as ancient as time when traveling through the ruins that were deeper than Norfair. Ridley would never seem to be destroyed throughout the Metroid series, he would only turn into more interminable forms utilizing modern mechanics and technology to give himself the most stout armor in the series. Fighting Ridely again in Metroid Prime, you knew that Ridley was an eternal beast that would never stop causing havoc on the remote space system.

For me, Kraid remains the king of all enemy bosses. Seeing that huge monster for the first time was amazing. What a great game this was on the SNES.

great article –
that battle with mother brain at the end – I don’t remember seeing anything else like it at the time. The size of the boss, the drama created and mother brains head snapping backwards each time you managed to hit her with that laser thing. I remember my heart pounding at the end of that one. Sure Ridely is iconic, but the Mother Brain battle was the best ‘event’.
and by the way ignore the haters on this site who expect it to be some slick, corporate set up. keep the quirky articles coming!
