mario-kart-64.jpgRacing games have been the thrill of the video game universe ever since the early days of the arcade. In every arcade you went into you would find racing games that tried to emulate the real thing. These games though, are not included in this list. In this list, we’ll cover the best racing games for the console generation. As always, our retro instincts made us think of choices that weren’t the “high fi” racing games of the day that can be tedious and same-y to use anyways. We are confident that this list will bring back memories of all the great racing games of the past. If not, then you truly haven’t played the best racing games of all time.

    5. F-Zero

f-zero_snes_screenshot4.gif F-Zero was a sophisticated racing game for its day. The controlling was perfect. The “cars” that you could choose from were slick. The graphics were superlative. The backgrounds you could watch by themselves without even racing. You felt the speed of the game at your hands while playing this game. The tracks themselves looked similar to Mario Kart (which came out two years later) which was of course a good thing. Knocking other racers out of the way was more fun than a date with a girl that you knew you could get in bed with easily afterwards. All in all, it was another strong showing from the Nintendo establishment and one of the better racing games of all time.

    4. R.C. Pro-Am

rcproam-1.jpg R.C. Pro-Am had some of the worst sound effects of any racing game ever. But this didn’t take away from its absolute enjoy ability (To be fair, the music was good). This game was all about turning. Everywhere you raced in this game, you were breaking, make inviolable turns finishing races in no time. Throughout the courses were water spots and oil spots that could sink you into the back of the race ending your game as quickly as you tried starting it. The acceleration boosts around the level were strange but proved to be a nice addition to an already well designed racing game. This game would require precise controlling abilities. R.C. Pro-Am was not for the faint at heart.

    3. Super Mario Kart

    super_mario_kart_snes_screenshot3.jpg

Mario Kart for the SNES made the Nintendo market even more massive then it had already become. Being able to take all your favorite characters from old school Mario and using them on intricate race tracks proved to be one of the more enjoyable moments for the SNES. Most people picked Mario to race with because he wasn’t weak in any category specifically. Using Bowser though was for only the best racers. His weight would make it hard to accelerate, but if you could avoid obstacles his acceleration speed was the best. The music was also a strong point in Mario Kart. This soundtrack would be sought after like the best SNES RPG’s. The Mario Kart legacy would first start with this SNES game.

    2. Mario Kart Double Dash

mario_kart_double_dash_002.jpg Mario Kart Double Dash for the Gamecube took up most of my college life. My papers and classes would always have to be put on hold while I played this game for a least 8 hours a day. To think of where I could be today if I spent all that time studying rather than playing Double Dash. Maybe my 3.4 average would have become a 3.9, but I don’t regret it for a second because I became a master of Double Dash that no one could beat. This accolade was far more important that the benefits of having a near perfect grade point average. Oh well, there is trying to explain the game too. I think everyone under the Sun has played Mario Kart Double Dash. With that being said, we will leave it to the reader to understand why this game is so good and addicting.

    1. Super Off Road

super_off_road_snes_screenshot2.jpg When Super Off Road was released for the SNES, it was monumental for those who enjoyed the arcade version. This game was as addicting as playing Tetris. Playing in two player mode was the most fun though. Playing against the computer and your friend at the same time proved to be an immense amount of enjoyment. What was even more fun though was using the second player to smash all the other players making your friend come in first every time. The “basher” could master this to the point that the computer truck that he was smashing would be taken all the way back a lap. There is no real ending to this game which makes it even more infinitely fun. The goal really is getting as much money as possible which is 9’s straight across the money spaces. This would take at least a whole summer though of 18 hour days. Old-Wizard T-shirts go out to anyone who can prove they have done this.

  1. Road Rash?

  2. A good list, but it seems out of order. Why put two games from the same series on the list? You should trade out a Mario Kart title for Road Rash.

    Grand Turismo?

  4. Yeah man you’re missing the original Gran Turismo, Forza Motorsport 2, and Top Gear 2.

Also, what’s up with all the retro? I realize that I’m suggesting some retro games too but it seems like you guys stopped gaming about 10 years ago? What gives?

  5. Dude, yes. I OWN super off road.

  6. Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec is my favorite. I go through a phase with that game every other year, starting a new career and building a collection of cars and trophies.

  8. no burnout (then again it technically isnt a “racing” game)

  9. Hey What are you stuiped why are there two mario kart games on here but no games from sega. What the hell is that? Virtua Racing needs to be on this list. You Know just because you have a website doesn’t make you GOD. You just made all this stuff up. Why isn’t raod rash on this list? What the hell is that? Let’s just skip road rash and say that mario kart is better.

No Sega rally. Sacrilege. ive played allot of racing games in my time including all the ones on this list and many that are not. This game ate my cash in the arcade & all but lived in my Saturn (along with guardian heroes). How it is not on your list I will never know.

Revolt (PC) should be on this list ? A arcade RC car racer that has the best RC physics by far of any game in its class. Some seriously imaginative courses, weapon power ups, and an aggressive AI makes for serious finger smashing fun. As a bonus there are literally hundreds of fan created courses, it is a truly inspired racing experience.

Grand Turismo, Forza Motorsport, Toca Race Driver, Colin McRae Rally, Dirt, Pure, Burnout, Flatout, Need For Speed Underground, Hot Pursuit, Most Wanted and Shift … and you had to include 2 Mario Kart games. That’s ridiculous.
