Remember the first time you played Zelda 1 and realized that you wanted to be the green clad hero that was walking about the flat screen? Remember the first time you loved a game because you wanted to be the protagonist with all their abilities that you would never have in real life? Old-Wizard remembers all of these moments as we constantly reflect on what our favorite video games are, and in this case, who are favourite video game heroes are. If this list seems retro in its choices, its not without reason, as games within the newer market fail to focus on the personal qualities embodied by one figure trying to save the world. This sense of grandeur and intrepidness led to some of the most memorable characters in the video gamer’s life. Protagonists in novels that the video gamer would read at school would always pale in comparison to the 8-bit characters they always had full control over. The characters in a video game always had much more nobler tasks than modernity’s insistence for leveling out heroism to anyone who feels entitled to their pride. The heroes on our list were always on the most aggrandized of adventures battling only the most nefarious of antagonists. Nowhere was their repose when faced with doom on a universal level. To these dreams of large adventures and magnanimous characteristics we owe the protagonists on this list. The video game world would be nothing without them.

    10. Donkey Kong

donkey_kong_en_smash_bros_brawl.jpgIt was a big event when Donkey Kong went from Antagonist to Protagonist. No more was Donkey Kong enslaving the lascivious princess (this became the work of Bowser). Donkey Kong would change his ways and become one of the most highly regarded heroes for the Super Nintendo system. Donkey Kong Country is where we first experienced his heroic ways as he beguiled the gamer into obsessive game playing. DKC is where we witness Donkey Kong emulating the bravery of all the great video game heroes as he traversed the coldest of icy climates and fought the most carping of island antagonists. Donkey Kong’s main power was much akin to Mario as he could jump on the less fortunate landlocked animals and spill them off your screen. Donkey Kong could of course also pick up barrels and throw them down steep hills destroying numerous enemies at one time. While always slightly slow physically and mentally, he was never without mettle and bravery. To be able to withstand all the elements of his autochthonous island would surely lead to a new found respect in the gamers eyes for Donkey Kong. He would continue his winning ways in a second installment of DK Country and a N64 version of the same type of game play. He would always appear goofy, slightly aloof, and always dumbfounded. Listen to his chatter in the Mario Kart series and one will understand his being circumscribed to a much more primitive psychology. It’s these primitive characteristics though that make us love him as one of the greatest heroes in video games history. Whenever we hear him angry, or we laugh at his over-dramatic puerility. Whenever we play Donkey Kong Country, we enjoy his character as much as any character before or after.

    9. Little Mac

assist10_071018b-l.jpgLittle Mac is the hero of Mike Tysons Punchout!, as he is the only player you can use, making him the supreme superhero by default. The opponents he had to face made for a daunting journey through the boxing world. A drunk Russian, a bald bull, and a magic turban Indian were just some of the opponents in the amiable Mac’s way as he arduously traversed the minor and major circuits in search of the grand prize, the world championship belt. On his way towards the prize, Little Mac got little help from his from his mentor/coach “Doc”. Doc would sit there smiley faced while Little Mac was getting pounded. Even at Mac’s corner during a tough fight, Doc would be acting as if Little Mac had nothing to worry about. Maybe that was Doc’s largess to Mac after all. After Little Mac’s first foray into the boxing world with Doc, he would have to go through another line of prize champion fighters in Super Punchout! with even more diverse and powerful opponents. Little Mac developed his skills and strength and took down the best in the world circuit from the surreptitious Masked Muscle to the frighteningly flegmatic Nick Bruiser. All opponents throughout the Punchout! Series were conspicuously larger and scarier than Little Mac making for a true Rock Balboa theme throughout these games. Never do we see Mac celebrating wins with after-match hedonism. Never do we see Mac taking his latest celebrity girlfriend to the ringside in hopes of impressing anyone besides his own self. He is as selfless as he is optimistic before a match. The small and selfless quality of Little Mac makes him a hero of superlative rank for the video game medium.

    8. Crono

Crono of “Chrono Trigger” fits our love for the silent protagonist perfectly. In a world where everyone is out to prove their own worth and glory, Crono is out to fulfill his duty reticently with inordinate sedulity. Crono would be a time traveling warrior worthy of his name as he traveled to the most distant of pasts and futures, even to the end of time! Don’t let his childish appearance and coquettish long hair fool you. He packed the power of sword (Katana to be exactly accurate) as strongly as any video game character who ever wielded this most conspicuous of video game weapons. If you combined his powerful sword techniques with one of his many accomplices, you would witness one of the most devastating sword attacks in the history of its use, even beyond the video game world. Beyond his technical abilities and worthiness in tacit disposition, Crono would prove his heroism in the overwhelmingly powerful enemies that he would have to face. He had to battle the swift sift of Magus, the variegated difficult enemies of the Ocean Palace, and the massive beast in the name of Lavos who would prove to be one of the most difficult final enemies in all of video gamedom. Crono though was not cajoled by any warnings of danger nor any feelings of fear. Crono wanted to save his friends and save the world he lived in with the friends he saved. One need only witness his sacrifice for his friends in the Ocean Palace to realize the character of this memorable protagonist. There are many RPG heroes we could of choose from when choosing to include one in this list. Crono though stood out for his abiding altruism and magnanimity to those he encountered throughout his journey.

    7. Qbert

Qbert is certainly the strangest protagonists on this list and probably in all of the video game world. Why would a simple task of jumping from block to block require a being with a large snout and a massive head? Couldn’t a simple stick figure do the simple task that was Qbert’s legacy? The simple answer is “No”. Qbert added big time to a game that could become boring quickly without his quirky design and peculiar profanity expressed when hit by an enemy. All we see from his profane moments is symbols signifying his absolute outrage on not being able to hop on different coloured platforms. How could such a Disney like character be endowed with a dirty mouth? Qbert hit at the reality of life beyond the video game world where we all have tasks that we have trouble completing and sometimes want to scream “@!#?@!” at the other person who’s in our way trying to stop us from doing what we need to do. It was an event when the video gamer was able to identify with their protagonist in being curtailed from their victories and ambitions. It was certainly paradoxical when the protagonist they were identifying with most was an orange circle with an elephant nose though. Regardless of this paradox, Qbert would fill the gamer with a sense of felicity and relief. Qbert’s popularity would skyrocket with the emergence of his own cartoon show, action figure, lunchbox, and even sleeping bags! Qbert would try to regain his massive popularity from the early 80’s in the techno-themed 90’s but would fail when his reemergence was embodied in less than stellar games. For the gamer who wants to visit the roots of his obsession though, there is no better place to start than with Qbert, who signified one of the first video game characters to ever be loved beyond the video game itself.

    6. Mega Man

The Blue Bomber may have appeared to be a wimp based on the poorly illustrated front covers of Mega Man 1 and 2, but when one entered into these games, they were taken back to the proton power of this average sized robot. Mega Man would traverse the most rococo of elemental stages fighting bot bats, massive pit falls, and enormous bosses all by himself. His auxiliary accomplices (E.G. Rush) would do nothing to take away the singular glory of Mega Man, as these accomplices usually appeared too placid to show any sense of valor and focus. Mega Man had one singular mission throughout the Mega Man series: stop the evil Dr. Wily from taking over the world with his ingenious creations. Mega Man not only had to rid the world of Dr. Wily once, but 8 times! Move into the future a couple thousand of years and Mega Man would have to stop Sigma the same way 6 times! That’s a total of at least 14 times that Mega Man had to save the world. This is certainly a lot of weight on one robot’s shoulders. Mega Man though, always faced the future with fearlessness knowing that his work in the world was guided by one single imperative. This imperative was never worn on his sleeve to the public eye nor ever for the sake of any kind of capitol. Mega Man did was he had to do, because it was what he did. Obviously, we can learn a lot from Mega Man on how to be better human beings asking for less and doing more for the sake of no prize. This selflessness embodied in Mega Man’s constant work in saving the world puts him at the upper echelons of video game herodom.

    5. Simon Belmont

The famous bounty hunter Simon Belmont first appeared on our TV screens with Castlevania 1. Armed only with a whip and prodigious long hair, Belmont took it has his destiny to rid the world of Count Dracula. Throughout his adventure, he had to face Medusa, a pair of nettling mummies, Frankenstein with Igor on his side, and the Grim Reaper who could disappear at will off the screen where Belmont was fighting him. We were amazed at the conviction in which Belmont blanched these sordid Romanian monsters. On his journey, Belmont would acquire weapons that he knew how to use seemingly without any training. Who else could pick up a cross and make it work like a boomerang? Who have you ever known who could make a boomerang work in the first place? Belmont had inherent traits that most human beings will never realize in their average attempts at greatness. Belmont, refractory in his goal towards saving eastern Europe operated on a different level than the normal human being. Bring any one of us to the front of an abandoned castle and we will run away like teenagers being chased by fastidious family members. Give any of us a whip and we will most likely whip ourselves in the face before executing any successful whip techniques. Belmont confronted these challenges with ease though and continued these impressive self-characteristics in Castlevania 2 where he not only battled Transylvania’s acrimonious population, but also the changes of the day to night making appearable sojourns in towns more like restive attempts at survival. Never would we hear Belmont say a word on his journey. It was not that he was a mute though. Simon Belmont like most characters on this list kept their mouth shut as they dealt with their lassitude in honorable silence. They were on a journey to save the world (in this case the world of Transylvania), and no one would prevent them from attaining their victory.

    4. Samus Aran

samus.jpgSamus Aran is the number one outer space hero in the whole video game medium. No other hero in outer space had the agility, weaponry or heart of this stunningly beautiful bounty hunter. What a surprise it was to realize that Samus Aran was a woman. Video game nerds gained a new respect for their opposite sex when they saw Samus Aran after the destruction of Mother Brain. More excited they were if they were to beat Metroid 1 in quick time seeing the outer space nymph without any of her suit on. Beyond the surprise of gender, Samus Aran was a force to be reckoned with. She could turn into a ball rolling away evasively from the most invective of enemies. She could wall jump up the tallest of structures. She could maneuver in the most furtive of fashions. Who amongst us would have the nads to enter into the broken-down space ship in Super Metroid? Samus Aran though entered into this fastidious maze with the courage of a Spartan warrior. Like all the great heroes on this list, Samus Aran went through these most universal of tasks without any hint of indignation. One of the more emotional moments of the series came when the little metroid she saved in a previous journey on SR388 came to save her on Zebus when she was being destroyed by a ferocious grasshopper in Mother Brain’s layer. Her kindness towards the baby metroid would be repaid again when she was suffering at the hands of the final permutation of Mother Brain. Here, Samus Aran would become more than any man, woman or child who had ever existed. Here she would become half human, half metroid, spurring one of the most dominant of protagonists in video game history. It’s too bad that we couldn’t ever fully utilize Samus Aran like how she was at the end of Super Metroid. Regardless, when experiencing the pure strength, ability, and courage of Aran, one can’t help but be overcome with the feeling of controlling one of the greatest characters in video game history. This experience would rarely ever be matched by heroes afterwards.

    3. Link

link_heros-bow.jpgLink is the heroe’s hero of the video game world. Armed with a sword, a shield, and magic as far as the mind could imagine, Link would take the prototypical hero of the romantic renaissance to new levels. He was all alone in Hyrule battling the most truculent of fictional antagonists. Link’s two main missions were always recovering pieces of the Triforce and saving princess Zelda. Each would always restore repose to the fairy tale land of Hyrule. The dungeons Link had to conquer were full of imprecations and dark wizardry all aimed at the small hero just trying to restore quixotic romance to the darkness. On his way throughout his adventures, Link would get stronger and would be able to carry the greatest of swords and wear the most sturdy of medieval armor. Link was also skilled in the bow and arrow which he would need to defeat bosses who’s weaknesses were only in their eyes. Link would grow up in the much underrated Zelda 2. Traversing a much more mature world, Link would have to encounter ostensibly nice people who sometimes would turn into bats spewing 8-bit flames at the valorous Link. What was Link to do? Run away into the forest where Aaron was being indolent with random letters? This was not Link’s character. Link would continue to walk the world of Hyrule passing through the most daunting of mountain paths and stealthily moving through the most precarious of volcano areas in order to fight his main antagonist in the priggish Gannon. Link would continue these quests throughout more subsequent adventures entering into 3rd themes and even well-designed multiplayer action games. It was his foray into the SNES though that found Link as one of the greatest heroes in video game history. Here, Link would have to alternate between a light and dark Hyrule always paying attention to the changes he was making in both to conquer his quest. Link was a heroes hero looking like a magical elf and wearing a feather cap only reserved for the most self-assured of heroes. Never lacking in resolve and always tireless to his destiny in extirpating Gannon, Link will always be one of the greatest heroes for the video game platform.

    2. Pacman

Forget the fact that Pacman was so popular that he was transformed into a cartoon and action figure. Forget the fact that people like to wear retro Pacman shirts in order to prove the worthiness of their self-identity. The only way to experience the power of this spherical chomper was to play the game “Pacman” for yourself. Was there ever a more addicting hero to control in all of video game history than Pacman? When you first moved Pacman around the simple lines of the screen, you were hooked immediately with this yellow ball eating up all the dots on the screen and running away from the ghosts. The simplicity of Pacman is unheard of today with the modern extension of protagonists in the video game world. It was Pacman’s simplicity that made him one of the most memorable video game heroes ever. Why was Pacman so simple? Pacman could do one of two things; eat and move. Once you move Pacman he would continue to move automatically wthout stopping except at boundary lines. If you were something that could be eaten, you were in for a miserable life as Pacman had the jaws of 10 alligators. Eat and move, eat and move; This is all Pacman could do, yet was more than enough for you to fall for this antiquated protagonist forever. It’s the supreme moment for the gamer when they install a Pacman arcade game in their basement or gaming room as they see all their friends mope in jealousy over your most recent procurement. You and Pacman are about have hours of fun together chomping down on ambiguous objects and stealthy apparitions. Your friends can only sulk over your new found friendship with this yellow circle.

    1. Mario

mario.jpgMario is the most recognized hero in all of video gaming history. How ironic it was that the most well-known hero of all time was a plumber. What looked like a cook at an Italian pizza shop became the most beloved protagonist in the video game world. What was it that made Mario so great? He was goofy, fat, and dirty beyond any doubt. Mario though was a skilled fighter contrary to his friendly Italian appearance. No character before or after had as powerful a jump as Mario. Enemies could do nothing as they watched the fat Italian smash their heads into oblivion. Little did they know that Mario could turn into a fire plumber spewing balls of fire at their hapless faces. Mario’s permutations would increase throughout the Mario series. In Super Mario World 3, we saw Mario change into raccoons, statues and frogs showing the apex of his adaptable abilities. Beyond all of his different forms though, it was the Mario by default that was always the most powerful. Being able to jump across entire screens while being able to extirpate enemies by landing on them proved to be one of the most fun maneuvers in video game history. Mario’s legacy would continue throughout all the Nintendo systems as he became even more palatable and urbane with his subsequent technological advancements. Mario continued his powerhouse ways in Mario 64, Mario RPG, and Mario Kart “Double Dash” just to name a few of the games he was in after the earlier 8-bit installments. Each time we encountered Mario in these games, we encountered the same joy of controlling him as we had from the previous games that he was the main protagonist in. Every type of game play Mario adapted to perfectly. Even a game as diverse as Mario RPG succeeded brilliantly in its execution. Who could of thought that Mario could be a RPG adventure hero on par with a Locke Cole or a Crono? As the years move on, Mario will continue to fill our TV screens with idiosyncratic Italian quips and perennially growing mustaches. That he’s as popular now as he was when first introduced in 1985 goes to show the power of this rotund manual laborer.

  1. this should be called “Top 10 VG heroes retro” not “of all time” Wher is Snake, MasterChief, Cloud, Leon etc…

  2. Q*Bert? Really, I don’t think the people who made Q*Bert would agree with that. But fair argument on the rest.

  3. Shut the fuck up stupid kidtendo droid.

Geez you suck…I haven’t read one of your lists that was actually…ya know…good. Usually I like clicking on the “Top 10 best…” links at N4g.com but I think I’m actually going to stop for fear that it will be one of your lists…and I’ll waste my time reading some and writing one of these stupid comments. No more…

  9. Sonic should be on the top 3, you’re a Sega hater!!!

great list. don’t listen to the other whiners. I dont agree with it, but I think its well written and fun to read.

    your list your opinions.

  11. #11 Pingfa says:

Sega fan or Sega hater, Sonic deserves a spot on that list (as do a few others but I won’t go into that ;) ).

Sonic is of the greatest type of hero. In game he kind of reminds me of the great Toshiro Mifune. :)
He’s a hero and a role model, without appearing effeminate or immature and young in mind (I’m looking at you Mario! :p – I like Mario. Just saying).

Also, you praised Mario for having the most powerful jump of all time and being able to transform into a “fire spewing” plumber. Well, I do admit Mario deserves a top place but… what could be cooler than that?

That’s right! Sonic is the fastest console hero on two feet with reflexes beyond any on that list. As well as that, he can transform too. Not into a ‘fire spewing plumber’ but a Super Saiyan Sonic.

Super speed. Super reflexes. Super Saiyan. Super Sonic.

Sonic deserves a high place on that list.

Ps. I noticed the name of the list is somewhat misleading. It is misleading because one thing I noticed is that this list, in your case, would be almost just if not more valid if it was called ‘My Top Ten favourite SNES games’, meaning you’ve based the characters on how fun the game was that they featured in.
As I know you don’t like Sonic the Hedgehog as a game, even liking the character this guaranteed that Sonic wouldn’t be on the list despite the name.

  12. Not a Sega hero among them. What a shock.

Several problems:1 all these guys are RETRO where is snake, or even pikachu?!?
    2 complete nintendo suck up
3 mario is, as you said, a plumber. So why the hell doesnt he just f off and do some plumbing? Because hes on drugs. He wakes up, smokes a bong or two and whoooo! mushrooms! evil turtles! And to top it off he has the most annoying tasch in history!!!
Who in their right mind thinks a drugged up plumber makes a good hero?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  14. No Gordon Freeman, Sonic, Solid Snake, Marcus Fenix, Ryu etc makes this list fail.

  15. ridley, samus, sonic, tails, knuckles, shadow and other sonic characters, master chief should ALL be on here!

first of all, this guy is a nintendo fan boy and accualy has sonic on the worst heros list(which I totaly dissagree with)
second of all, sonic would have been on this list a few years ago, but his recent games have killed him(not litteraly)…

yes, he prefers nintendo. no snake is because it is an OLD LIST get in your heads. THIS WAS MADE BEFORE SNAKE EXISTED. also, pikachu is an evil, electrically charged hamster(that slowly becomes a rabit-mouse thing) and this list is top 10 not top 20

  20. “ridley, samus, sonic, tails, knuckles, shadow and other sonic characters, master chief should ALL be on here!”

Ridley Lover: Please read the list before commenting. Samus is #4.

just about all the characters on this list are soul less husks from a time long gone. none of these characters have any sort of humanity and for the most part there personalities are pretty childish, mario, link, Donky kong. And this isn’t even an ode to classsic characters because there is no Guybrush, Grim Fandango or sonic. And besides Chrono and possibly samus i’m pretty sure that none of the characters on your list even have dialogue. Garret from Thief is better than every character on this list. From the other posts its obvious that i’m not the only one that this is a nintendo fanboy list.

  30. #30 davsanti says:

    Sonic should be here

  31. I would definitely agree about first and foremost Sonic missing, but also The Master Chief, Snake, Ninja Gaiden, and all the rest, but you have to realize that this is someone’s opinion and as we all know opinions are like assholes and everybody thinks everyone else stinks. If you’re so butt hurt about someone’s opinion then go post your own top 10 (frankly not enough room for them all) and quit whining. I don’t even know where i’d begin, but i know that I, personally, (this is an opinion) would end it with Link. I mean come on. He is the epitomy of the hero and those games were so damn fun.

  35. Link is totaly awsome he is one of the most populer caracter of all

  36. wow, despite solid snake’s DEBUT on the nes in metal gear, and his continued nintendo action in metal gear 2 and later twin snakes, still unable to make this nintendo saturated list? oh well, my number 1 vg hero of all time, and spanning 22 years or something like that. should have made this list.

  37. Keep Link, Mario, Samus, and Pac-Man. Where are Snake, Sonic, Master Chief, Cloud?

  38. my list (changed it):10.NiGHTS 9.Bomberman 8.Kirby 7.DK 6.Pac-Man 5.Samus 4.Megaman 3.Mario 2.Link 1.Sonic Honorable Mention:Luigi, Squall Leonhart, Sub-Zero, Yoshi, Tails, Knuckles, Conker, Snake, Master Chief, Lara Croft, Shadow, Fox, Kid Icarus, Olimar. Hate Pikachu, and I don’t include Characters from just 1 game.

  44. all i have to say is where is the love for cloud or spyro? who doesn’t love a little purple dragon?!

  45. snake debuted on the nes, crono debuted on snes…

    March 17th, 2010 at 7:46 am

Okay, number one, I would have switched Samus and Link, but, no big deal. Number two, i don’t know who Qbert is, so snake should take his place. Finally, for all the sega lovers there, I would have put…Sonic in place of crono. Otherwise, this list is spot on. Mario should be #1 on this list despite what some say(you know who you are). I mean, that guy has guts going against a super intelligent fire breathing dragon! Mario, link and Samus are the best!

  47. CRONO IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  49. this lists sucks because it doesn’t have dante from devil may cry, leon kennedy from resident evil 2 and 4,kratos from god of war.thats all i remember that SHOULD be on this list, and also move on,these games on the list were good but move on to this century and start playing some new games.
