    5. Better Design

How many times did the Sega Genesis fail on the gamer? I remember some people having to buy three of these machines in one year, before they started to realize the power of the SNES. I’ve had the same SNES since I bought it in the early 90’s. The games work perfectly and the system works perfectly without having to blow on either to get them working. The ugly looking Sega was not durable and easily shattered by the smallest of accidents. Most people got an SNES after their Sega broke. They knew how bored they were with the Sega games anyways.

    4. Better Multiplayer Action

The Sega had no multiplayer games except for bad sports games. The SNES had Mario Kart (arguably the greatest multiplayer game of all time), Bomberman, Tetris Attack, and lets not forget, Secret of Mana which perfectly employed the RPG format into 3 player fun. All these games gave distinct memories to the group of friends playing these games. Sega multiplayer games made friends fall asleep, and eventually buy SNES’s.

    3. Better Music

It’s hard to think of one game with memorable music for the Sega Genesis. The SNES on the other hand had great music for every single RPG made for the system. All of these games had memorable music. Beyond the RPG’s were Super Metroid, Zelda “Link to the Past”, and Mario Kart. This is an easy argument. We really never had any song from Sega come to our heads out of nowhere.

    2. Better Graphics

super_metroid_mother_brain_hyperbeam.pngLook at Sonic 1 VS Super Mario World for the SNES. These were some of the first titles for both systems. Look at the color of the Super Mario World Map. Look at the level designs of the Sonic levels. Sonic came across as old and amateur compared to the Super Mario World graphics. The best graphics for Sega were the metamorphic scenes from altered beast which were ridiculous in their extravagance anyway. Look at the last boss of Super Metroid. Did the genesis ever compare to anything on this level? Not a chance.

    1. Better Games

This is an absolute no-brainer and the number 1 reason why the SNES dominates Sega. Secret of Mana, FF3, Super Metroid, Zelda “Link to the Past”, Chrono Trigger, Illusion of Gaia, Mario Kart, Soul Blazer, Secret of Evermore, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Yoshi’s Island, Star Fox, ect. And for Sega? Ehhh. Sonic Spinball? This is so obvious it shouldn’t even be argued. This is more obvious than the common inherent law of respect.

  1. Just occurred to me… Bomberman was funner on the Genesis. :-p So it doesn’t really hold up as a reason for the SNES having better multiplayer games.

Well, had some free time and nothing to do, so I figured I’d take another jab.

    See you next time. ;-)

  2. You call this journalism? This is the worst, least informed article I’ve ever read.

Well not everyone can like the same thing after all and off course Nintendo had better selling games, it’s all true… And it’s also true that >100 IQ isn’t for everyone either. It’s actually quite a small percentage. I can draw the parallels quite well based on this.

    Faggot.

  4. Hehehe…

    Fanboys are fun, aren’t they?

The genesis was severely lacking in buttons. the SNES had twice as many buttons. It seems trivial, but try MK3 on genesis and you’ll see what I mean. Also the lack of half assed japanese titles made the SNES a little happier, for me at least.

  6. As far as the power consumption is concerned, one quick look at this link: http://www.iea.org/textbase/work/2007/set-top/Energy_measurements_%20of_48%20US%20STBs.pdf

completely disproves that the genesis (at least the genesis 2) uses more power than the SNES. The difference is negligible, but the genesis actually uses a little LESS.

  7. hi, andar here, i just read your post. i like very much. agree to you, sir.

okay, Oldwizard.com… STOP comparing nintendo to sega and sonic to mario. Sega and Nintendo have teamed up now! they work TOGETHER!!

Dude better multiplayer games? I don’t think you ever played any genesis games, you even listed toe jam and earl as one of the best co op games ON YOUR WEBSITE but forgot to mention it here. General Chaos, Sonic 2, GUNSTAR HEROES, GOLDEN AXE, theres so many more for the genesis than the snes, even though mario kart and secret of mana are probably one of the best you have to give some credit for some games on the sega genesis

  10. This list is total rubbish. Both consoles were absolutely brilliant without question.

Obviously the person who wrote this doesn’t know a thing about the Genesis. He only ever mentions Sonic and then lists all the great Nintendo games. That is like making a list about why Nintnendo sucks and only mentioning Mario. You would be furious.

For my opinion, Sega had the best of the flashy and action packed games (Sonic, Strider, Shinobi, Earthworm Jim, Streets of Rage, Vectorman, etc), while Nintendo had the best of the explorative games (Zelda, Final Fantasy, Metroid, Legend of Mana, etc).

In the end if you like descovering things, I would say go Super Nes. If you like over the top action, go Genesis. I like both, so I’m lucky to play both.

  11. “The average IQ of an SNES fan is 115. The average IQ of a Sega fan was 80. We always find smarter people to be more interesting than dumb ones. Thus, SNES fans were always much cooler.”

What the hell did I just read?

Lets imagine that you were reading a website that was trashing the Genesis in favor of the SNES, making unsubstantiated statements but staying so moderate and milquetoast as to not provoke outcry.

Now, in that situation you might well have choice words for such an article, but let’s imagine that you don’t personally feel that you have the intelligence or writing ability to adequately express just how wrong they are. What can you do? If you tried to critique what they said, you’d likely just do damage to your cause! You’re great at being a loudmouth and causing people to ridicule you, but in-depth analysis is just plain and simply out of your reach…

So, you play to your strengths…you write your own anti-genesis article and get it posted on old-wizard, and then just sit back and let the comments roll in.

If you ask me, you guys should just own up and start publishing Deadpixel’s comments as your articles.

It’s the fans that wanted to have the same games over time. Bad marketing strategy, I’d say. So games like Lunar series are overshadowed and forgotten, in case you want to know, Lunar series have some of the best story, IMO and as they say so.

Nintendo, in the other hand, less-known titles were brought up because of the success of mainstream titles like Mario so they had a chance to secure their legacy.

  14. I guess if you’re all about grinding numbers out in the name of “strategy” and being moved by some of the worst writing ever seen in a commercial product the SNES might have some games for you.

  15. Well sega did get out a few game (I’m thinking about most of the dreamcast title) but that didn’t stop them from and utless and epic failure. I prefer the way things are now, sega producing wii and ds game.

I’m off to play sonic rush!

  16. This is without a doubt the most fanboyish website I have ever seen in my life.

Your logic is all kinds of ridiculous.

    10. First off you know nothing about Sega. Who had the better ads is obviously personal preference but theres no denying that Sega’s ads for the Genesis did their job.

    9. Well you’re right about this.

    8. No, no, hell no. SNES has a solid controller don’t get me wrong. But you’re knocking the Genesis controller for it’s simplicity? Uh, wasn’t the NES controller shaped like a brick and had two buttons? The 3 button controller suited the games just fine and they sure as hell make the games easier to play with keyboard on an emulator than SNES games, and besides they did make a 6 button controller that was compatable with fighting games. And you’re knocking it for being to big? I have never had any problem with the controllers size. Once again your hypocrisy dosen’t cease to amaze, the N64 controller was a beast in comparison.

    7. This is just ignorant fanboyish garbage based on absolutely nothing.

    6. God DAMN, how freaking biased do you have to be? Sonic one of the most boring characters ever? Yeah, he has no personality whatsoever. Link and Samus on the other hand…

    5. I think you just made this up, or you’re basing it on your own personal experience and assume that this is common.

Well guess what? I have an SNES and a Genesis, both of which I’ve had since 1991. The Genesis still works fine, but my SNES stopped working and now I have to use an emulator. Funny how that works.

    4. WRONG. Bad sports games? I beg your pardon. Genesis sports games were superior to SNES games in every way. The Madden series got it’s start on the Genesis, and it was always more popular on that system than on the SNES.

Gunstar Heroes, Toe Jam & Earl, Contra Hard Corps, Mega Bomberman, NHL 94, Streets of Rage series, Herzog Zwei. All great multiplayer titles.

    You fail again.

    3. Sonic, Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi 3, Streets of Rage trilogy, Ristar, Rocketknight Adventures, Landstalker, Ecco, Gunstar Heroes, Toe Jam & Earl, Castlevania Bloodlines. All these games had amazing soundtracks, and holy crap, they’re great games too and on par with the SNES classics.

Just because it had a limited sound chip in comparison to the SNES, that surely dosen’t mean it didn’t have games that made the best of it.

    2. SNES graphics were better. But not by a significant amount. Yes it had less grainy sprites and backgrounds. But Sega compensated with games that had a lot of color and imagination in the visuals. Games like Ristar and Dynamite Headdy. And then you have games like Vectorman and Gunstar Heroes which pushed the console to it’s limits and as a result look just as good as anything on the SNES.

    1. To say it’s not debatable is just plain ignorant. It’s all about tastes. And both systems have their pros and cons. SNES had more RPGs and Fighting games. But the Genesis had more platformers and far superior sports games and arcade style games like beat em ups and shmups.

Yeah, SNES had the bigger franchises, only because it adapted so many franchises that got their start on the NES. Sega by comparison had to start from scratch, and for people that didn’t just want to play updates of NES games, Sega offered more original games.

Look, I love and cherish both consoles and I’m not even saying that the Genesis was better. Sure the SNES was technically superior. But I’m more into platformers and arcade style games than RPG’s. And in the end, I always find myself coming back to the Genesis more than the SNES.

This article and this whole site = super fail.

  17. What the guy above me said, he couldnt have said it better.

Plus, Both systems had their own crappy 3rd party games too. Hey, SNES got Wizard of OZ, Sega didnt. Oh didnt Doom sound better on the 32x than the SNES? Im pretty sure it did. Oh yea, and SNES got that game used with the id Doom engine in it, the one where you shoot sheep with a sling shot? The Noahs Ark game i belive. Yea, Sega turned their noses up on that, good reason too.

I still dig the Kalinske adds with the “Welcome to the Next Level” with the Sega scream. Kalinske wanted to make sure that if you got a Nintendo system, the kids would laugh at you till you piss your pants. What a great way to advertise. Yea, the kids at my school who had a Genesis, were cool. They really were.

Now, the SNES was my first system, and today it still works, same like my Genesis does too. Sega had its fair share of RPG games with Phantasy Star series and Streets of Rage to me seems to beat the pants off Final Fight.

Ive been a Sega Fan for the past few years when i realized that i really missed out on the Genesis in the 90’s and other Sega consoles too. I still like my SNES, but i rather prefer Sega systems since they are more in my best interest than Nintendo.

Also, every “best game list” has a generic Nintendo game in it. Most of those games on the list never list those hidden classics from Sega. Im the person that never gets involved in what people know about, and that goes with Nintendo games.

Also, i have no reason to play an NES. I just cant find myself buying one, because theres nothing on there to play. “Oh, but what about Super Mario Bros?” What about it? Ive played it, big freaking deal. Id rather enjoy games from the Sega Master System and get the same or better affect from it.

Look, i dont hate Nintendo, and i like my Nintendo consoles, i really do. But, the world of Sega just seems to have opened my eyes to so much more, and i wish i saw that in the beginning. I much prefer Sega than Nintendo. Sega’s only downfall was bad leadership and really dumb desicions by Sega of Jap CEO. If Kalinske was still CEO and everything that happened to Sega that was bad didnt happen, Sega i bet would be up there with Sony and Microsoft to this day. I guarantee that whole heartedly.

Nintendo kinda got lazy into using CD games. I never found a reason to play a Gamecube, because Nintendo marketed it for kids and Sony offered ported Sega games and more. Everyone switched to CD stuff by 2000’s, and i found no reason to play my N64 because by then, Nintendo had nothing to offer me. Gamecube had the Metal Gear Solid games, and thats all i wanted to play was the revived version of MGS for Gamecube. Seriously, thats it.

Plus to me, the Wii is like taking drugs for the first time, only the same amount. The more you do, the more quantity you want, not the same amount. So soon, that fun for the Wii just went bland and “meh”.

Oh yea, it wouldnt surprise me if Sega came back with another console, that blew away anything that Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft could ever achieve. Hey, nothing is impossible.

Plus, i cant take this seriously coming from someone who doesnt double check what they wrote when it comes to misspellings and sentence fragments. It was like every other sentence had a misspelled word or bad pronoun in it. If you want your site to look more professional, take the time.

Yea, you can read my other comment on the worst consoles list if you have time…

  18. The Genesis even had it’s advantages in terms of processing. It was capable of handling more sprites than the SNES, and blast processing contrary to popular belief was actually based on some truth, the Genesis did have a faster clock speed and Genesis games generally ran art much smoother frame rates. On one hand you had games like Streets of Rage 2 which handled lots of character sprites at once and played smooth as silk, then you had the SNES port of Final Fight which had only 4 sprites on screen at once and it was still prone to slowdown. And you really think the SNES could handle a game like Sonic? Pfft, have you seen how jumpy the frame rate for Kirby Superstar is? Don’t tell me the SNES could play a Sonic game when it couldn’t even play a freaking Kirby game at a consistant frame rate.

  19. This is without a doubt the most fanboyish website I have ever seen in my life.

You need to play the Super Nintendo games that had better assembly coding. Try playing Space Megaforce, Sparkster, Cybernator, Wild Gun, Smash TV and then tell me about the silky smoothness.

Not many people understand the idea of assembly optimizing and it is hard to explain how it works, but it is possible to make a cpu faster just by rearanging codes and taking mathematical short cuts.

Just because some games had slowdown with not many sprites doesn’t mean that other games didn’t have a lot of sprites with no slowdown at all.

Stopped reading when you said the people who owned the SNES had an average IQ if 115 and the ones who had Sega 80. This argument is plain retarded.

And I beg your pardon, the Genesis controller is a very good one. It feels good and my hand doesn’t tire. And dare I say, the Genesis is better at beat ‘em ups, just check out Comic World.

Sega Genesis had games you faggots. Sonic The Hedgehog 1-3, Streets of rage 1-3, Golden Axe 1-3, Gunstar Heroes, Phantasy Star 1-4, Shining Force 1-2, Mutant League Football, Mutant League Hockey, Strider 1-2, Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi 3, Shadow Dancer, Vectorman 1-2, Landstalker, TMTN: The Hypersone Heist, Eternal Champions, Contra: Hard Corps, Castlevania:Bloodlines, Columns, Alien Solider, Altered Beast, Comix Zone, General Chaos and Sword Of Vermillion. Stick your Sonic spinball up your ass, because you don’t know jackshit. Nintendo fans cooler? Are you serious? Oh my god. Sega Genesis had pretty graphics and music too.

I disagree. I am neither a Sega fanboy nor a Super Nintendo fanboy. I love them both. But when some idiot comes along and…is an idiot, I feel I must fight…for my right…to paaar-TAY. And as such, I have two words for you. Shinobi Three. Also Sonic Three.

yea whatever, the SNES was released 2 years after the genesis, they had all the damned time in the world to design a better model. The genesis had over 700 games in its library and the snes had 1000, i agree with more games, but BETTER? no, sega had many good franchises, SOR, shinobi, SONIC, etc. because the snes was targeted at younger audiences, many games were changed, mortal combat had censored blood while the genesis version made SNES fanboys drool.

I do agree with the better music, the genesis audio was as primitive as an 8 bit machine, but its port of rock n roll racers had decent music, and it had michael jackson’s moonwalker. controllers? wow, the genesis controllers were cool, thank you very much, and used the 9 pin adaptor so it was compatible with a wide variety of home computers and consoles, the SNES? its in its own little world…

And graphics, yes the SNES has beautiful graphics, but again, it was released 2 years after the genesis, (look at the ps3 and 360). But back on the NES times, it was truly Genesis does what Nintendon’t

Pretty good list but please edit #3

You forgot to mention Mr.David Wise’s music. Aquatic Ambiance, Stickerbrush Symphony and every other song he made for the DKC series is far greater then every song in rpg’s / other snes games that you mentioned in that list.

  26. “The SNES was a perfect wash of white, purple and grey.”

    LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!

  27. Better games? They were better publicized. Try Sonic 1-3 + K, Herzog Zwei, Gunstar Heroes, Bloodlines, Contra: HC, Virtua Racing, Phantasy Star II-IV, SITD + Shining Force 1 & 2, Space Harrier, Rocket Knight Adventures, RoS & Shinobi III, OutRun, Streets of Rage, Dynamite Headdy, Vectorman 1 & 2, Alien Storm, Strider, X-Men + Clone Wars, Aladdin, Ristar, etc.

In addition, alot of the best games on the SNES – Earthworm Jim, Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat I-III, etc. – were also on Genesis, and it had great PC ports, like Pirates! and Dune, as well as some great CD/32x games, like Star Wars Trilogy Arcade and Virtua Fighter II. If you’re going to hate, atleast try knowing the source material.

This is pathetic…No wonder after the Super Nes nintendo fell miserably. It was because of fanboys like you! Fanboys that demanded retarded games.
After the Super Nes, they realized nintendo fans wanted kiddy games, that’s why N64 delivered crap to every shitty nintendo fan out there. Morons like you were the inspiration for the worst consoles of all times! N64, Gamecube and WII.

I will always love my nes and snes as well as all the systems i have, but people like you, asking for idiotic games, will bring along the downfall of nintendo!

BTW: Sports, racing, action, beat em ups and shoot em ups were better on genesis by far.
I love Snes because of its Rpgs, fighting and platform games.
All in all, both machines rule. On the other hand you suck.

Not only claiming tha one console is 100 times better than the other, but claiming that its fans (I mean you, guys) are smarter than the fans of other console is oficially the most retarded console-war argument I’ve ever heard. Except for maybe the commercial comparison…
