Everything about modern life sucks. It all revolves around computers and shallow pop culture. All of the movies that are being made today would have looked better if they were made 15 or 20 years ago (or even earlier). I don't care how much time or talent or whatever it takes to put into making CGI, IT SUCKS. IT SUCK, SUCK, SUCKS. SUCK CITY. It looks fake and cartoonish. There isn't even any cartoon movies anymore. It's all computer animated.
Even if there was, it would be considered oldschool or something. I hate CGI. I didn't like it when it first started getting really popular either, in the late 90s and into the 00s. It's an eyesore. But, I know hollywood will continue making these movies because it's all about the money. Is it really wrong to live in the past? No.

I agree the vast majority of new films are crap. There's prob bout 1 one a year.

The reason there are no good films now is money. Film companies make these crappy superhero movies because these are good for merchandising, which is where they make most of there money, then they endless sequels because its garenteed income and they can keep churning out this crap merchendise.

Also films now make way more at the box office and tons more is spent on advertising. No matter how many bad reviews a film gets if the media is completly blitzed with advertising people will go watch it. These old classic films didn't make nowhere near what their modern equivlents have at the box office.

Sometimes the CGI we see in movies is obvious, sometimes it's plain bad. The thing about good CGI is that when it is good, you don't even realize that it was CGI.

Look for some special effects break down videos. Some are just cool, but a few are actually really surprising.

Where VFX usually tricks me, is when I assume that something must be real footage simply because it seems like it would be easy to shoot. "All that guy is doing is walking down the street, obviously they just filmed him walking down a real street." You'd be surprised how often something like that was shot on a green/blue screen.

I can guarantee that everyone here has seen some really great, seamless VFX shots or composites and not keyed in on the fact that it wasn't real.

We don't notice the good CGI (because it's good), but we see one or two bad shots and that's what sticks with us. The bad CGI.

I was expecting some real points here (such as action and thriller movies tajing themselves way too seriously) but instead all I got was "Movies are only good if you can laugh at their special effects." Do you think if the tefhnology we have today was available to George Lucas and Steven Spielberg they would pass up the chance to use it? There always has been bad movies and there always will be.

I think nowdays they just want to make profit and fast. Therefore they must feed the biggest and therefore less demanding audience. So the sequels come out (ok, very few are actually better, but those are entirely exceptions)
I'd say that computer generated animation almost always shows. There are really few examples, where you can't see if it is real or not (like Pirrates of carribean)

Lack of good actors - instead of ass kicking superheroes like Arnold, Stallone(Thank Odin, he made some great finishing movies like Rocky6 and yet to come- Rambo) etc etc, we get soft metrosexual douchebags (very few exceptions here too).
And not only in action movies. In all genre - drama, comedy...
Where are people like Jackie Chan? Atkinson?

Lack of original ideas. Really - every second movie has had been a comic or a cartoon before that.

I'm too tired to write normal, careful comment...
Let's just say i like "The thing" more than any /modern/ scary movie.
Oh, and modern movies really do not make lasting impact. You watch it once.. meh.. was ok, and that's it. Because they give you no alsting values. I can give an example - in ussr we had a movie "Gentlemen of Fortune", that dealt with uncommon problem, but was so full of everyday life humor, you could watch it over and over and everyone understood how good it was. I probably have seen it like 20 times (not in a row) and still don't feel this "aah, the next scene I know..."
