Here it is folks, the biggest debate on the whole interweb. Never has there been a more well thought out argument for a completely non-existent thing. Which superhero could beat up which other superhero. Never has a group of people spent more time drawing graphs, doing calculations, making charts, and writing computer programs to prove that the hero they love is in fact the toughest. These people do more literature searches than a graduate student writing their dissertation on literature. One can only imagine what world problems could be solved if comic book nerds would instead focus this same energy on say; poverty, healthcare, the climate, pollution, the economy, childhood obesity, cancer, sudden infant death syndrome, racism, genetic disorders, violence against women, the melting ice caps, sending a man to mars, depression, solving Goldbach’s conjecture, creating a unified field theory, un-raveling the mystery of DNA, figuring out what happened before the big bang, resolving religious tensions in the Middle East, finding peace on Earth, making cleaner cars, sustainable energy, nuclear fission, getting rid of hippies, and the million other things that would make this world a better place to live in.

So in order to finish this debate once and for all we here at OW have finally finished THE list of the most powerful superheros. This is it folks. As every faithful reader knows that we here at OW are always right, we have proved it in the past. There can no longer be any debate. No more argument required. This list has taken us years to complete, and has threatened to destroy all that is OW. While making this list there was lots arguing, name calling, some shouting, a little bit of snuggling, more shouting, lots of your momma’s, but we finally came up with the definitive list of the most powerful superheroes of all time. We can’t be more clear on that last point, this is it. None of what you are about to read is opinion, it is fact. Next time one of your nerd buddies starts to argue you need only refer to this list, kindly pat him the head a give him one of the problems listed above to argue about. Here’s how we did it. First we excluded all super villains, this is heroes only, next we eliminated all exorbitantly overpowered cosmic beings (Phoenix, Odin, or the Highfather). And finally we ignored all heroes that would be considered ‘normal’ but have similar powers as those listed below. Then we plugged in all the facts and figures into the OW super computer and waited. Exactly 137 days later the answer was spit out. It then took us one year to figure out what that answer meant. Finally its over, these are the most powerful superheroes. Fact.

10. The Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)

Despite coming in at number 10, The Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) is one tough hombre. As a member of the Green Lantern Corps, he wields a power ring that can generate a variety of effects and energy constructs, sustained purely by the ring wearer’s strength of will. The greater the user’s willpower, the more effective the ring. The limits of the power ring’s abilities are never defined, but it has been referred to as “the most powerful weapon in the universe” on more than one occasion. It’s precious. Over the years, the ring has been shown capable of accomplishing almost anything within the imagination of the ring bearer. Often the rings are used to form solid-light constructs, the power and size of which are limited only by the ring-bearer’s willpower. And, if that wasn’t powerful enough, DC recently (in 2006) retconned the ring’s longtime lack of effect on yellow objects, stating that the ring-bearer need only feel fear and overcome it in order to affect yellow objects. With his protective bubbles and mean green energy bursts, the Green Lantern has fought with, and at varying times against, such heavyweights as Superman and Captain Marvel. But he’s still no match for number 9 on our list…

9. Doctor Strange

Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Steven Strange, has unparalleled sagicity of the mystic arts, and stands as humanity’s first and last line of defense against all magic-based menaces that threaten our dimension. I think Doc Strange is probably one of the more powerful characters in the Marvel Universe, and light years ahead of any of the crappy sorcerers from DC (although Zatanna is way hotter). Given that he can do pretty much anything that the person who is currently writing him can imagine, he could potentially beat any of the other characters in this list. In fact, he could probably beat some of them by simply wiggling his finger. Of course this assumes that he would enough time to do so. The problem is that most of the other heroes on this list won’t give him even that small amount of time. His lack of super speed, super reaction time, super senses and any sort of super human invulnerability, make Dr. Strange one of the easiest characters to defeat on this list. For this reason alone we put Dr. Strange at #5. If he had unlimited prep time before each fight, he could easily be number one on this list.

8. Black Bolt

Our seventh most powerful superhero of all time is Black Bolt, the king of the offshoot of humanity known as the inhumans. Black Bolt has often been described as one of the most powerful superheroes in the Marvel universe by other heroes, and for good reason. Through electron gathering and manipulation, Black Bolt can increase any aspect of his physical nature to superhuman levels, including his strength, speed, stamina and durability. In times of great need, he can channel this power into a single devastating punch called “The Master Blow”. He can also harness the electrons for matter transformation; the controlled projection of energy as concussive blasts or quasi-solid particle/electron fiends, broadcasting jamming frequencies, and flight. But Black Bolt’s most salient offensive weapon is his cacophonous voice, as a hypersonic shout that can level an entire city, and his merest whisper has been shown capable of stunning the Hulk. It’s even been suggested that his voice is capable of destroying an entire planet.

7. The Flash

People who don’t know a lot about comic books often assume that the Flash can run really fast, but is otherwise a normal guy. He can turn his opponent into a statue, or phase his hand through his opponent’s head, causing it to explode. He is also impressively durable for a normal human, and most, though not all, of his impressive feats of durability have been while moving faster than normal. Many times he’s taken hits from Class-100 opponents, various energy blasts, ect. and ranged from quickly recovers to unfazed. Not only is Flash faster than Pre-CRISIS Kryptonians(and Silver Age Superman was so fast, not only count he travel through time and dimensions through speed, but he nearly broke the barrier between Life And Death and was about to crash into Heaven), but he’ll probably have a few examples of simply phasing through to avoid, as well. And Flash doesn’t need to cause the charge that causes matter to explode every time he vibrates through something.

6. The Martian Manhunter

The Martian Manhunter’s chief super power is super strength. Super strength and durability. His two powers are super strength, durability and flight. His three powers are super strength, durability, flight and shapeshifting. Amongst his many powers are super strength, durability, flight and shapeshifting… I’ll come in again. The Martian Manhunter is basically the Swiss army knife of Superheroes. Along with all those powers, he has super speed and “Martian” vision, both at levels close to those of Superman himself. He not only can turn invisible but also alter his density to become incredibly strong, tough and ultimately intangible. In addition to his physical powers, J’onn is also a very powerful telepath. He also possesses 9 different senses, though these are ill defined and often forgotten by comic book writers. And if superhuman physical strength and mental powers aren’t enough, J’onn also has the ability to regenerate. In the past he’s even regenerated his entire body from only his severed hand.

Two problem; 1st very rarely do you see people of equal strength knock each other into orbit. 2nd problem Hulk capable of doing same to Superman. Also I think both heroes have proof they are capable holding their own ground in battles. So is it possible they could knock each other into orbit? Answer is yes. Is it likely? Answer is no.

Will : Hulk is supposed to have unlimited strenght but he doesn’t have unlimited rage. Even if Hulk could punch Superman in space… Superman can fly. Hulk can’t. Superman has prooved to be a good user of his speed. He used it against a bunch of ennemies that sometimes, were stronger than him. Is Hulk faster than Superman? No. Hulk won’t even be able to see him coming. What would stop Superman to freeze him with his breath (It worked on Doomsday so it is going to work on Hulk) and throw him in space while he’s frozen? Nothing. Superman is a much more intelligent fighter than Hulk. Hulk is a brute. He doesn’t care about what he destroy. He’ll just throw anything he find to Superman. Hulk doesn’t really know the art of fighting. Like alberto said, Superman has learned from Wonder Woman (Amazon), Batman (The pro of the Martial Art), the Kryptonians, learned how magic works with Zatanna, etc. I understand that Banner is intelligent but Superman is too. God, he even made vehicules for himself, robots (in a different universe) that could protect his forteress, etc. The guy is farrr away from being stupid and he will use this intelligence to beat Hulk. People always come out with : Hulk has a terribly good regeneration. If Superman is full powered by Yellow Sun, Hulk doesn’t stand a chance.

Hulk is capable of moving very fast when high enrage. What you said about Hulk don’t hold up because Hulk fought likes of Thor & Silver Surfer both are capable of move at light speed and have great strenght. Remember Shadowhunter Superman primary attack isn’t blitz with speed. Superman don’t used this ability very often a thing I belief Zeromage brought up on Thor vs Superman Blog comments. You overstate Superman speed advantage. It is there but probably won’t as big factor as try to make it. Even crossover they don’t mention it as advantage factor.

This is a missunderstanding that people has about Superman. Superman lives in a crystal world, He holds back by instinct. That is why people think Supergirl is stronger. But they forget that Superman Holds back, is not that He can’t do it, is just that He holds back. When required, he travels at that speed. Galdiator on the other hand was raised to exploit his power. He goes all out. Superman does not.
Superman’s feats , make Gladiator feats look like a baby Superman.

Gladiator powers seems to depend on his confidence level, that is as easy as to make fun of his mohawk to start defeating him. Plus he lost against canon ball. canonball is a street level character.

While Gladiator may seem powerful in Marvel, he is not as powerful as Superman, The Sentry or Captain Marvel

But like I already said like 10 times before, Kallark can come in at 100 times light speed and just tap them, and the inertia will launch them to their doom, maybe not supes but it’ll still catch his ass off guard, and sentry can’t even fly close to as fast as Gladiator or Supes, and marvel is just an dumbass he could use his sensing power of whatever, and he wouldn’t be able to pick up on Kallark until he was already on him.

Yes, that is a posibility, that Gladiator could catch Superman off guard.

But I have not seen him doing what you are saying, not even when he fought against Thor. but he may be able to do it.

There is also another problem, that Gladiator is a “clone” character. and can’t be included on the list.

Here’s my thoughts:

1. Thor
He has been stated numerous times to be Marvel’s most powerful hero (Stan Lee even said he made Thor to be Marvel’s #1 heavy hitter). The Silver Surfer himself has stated the power cosmic is no match for the Odin Force. Also, we recently have heard Thor state that he’s been holding back for most of his career. The guy has too many different powers and too many ways to beat an opponent. From brute force, to magic, to energy blasts, to battle field removal. (Superman has no true BFR ability). Thor’s magic gives him a distinct edge over Superman as well.

2. Silver Surfer
If it wasn’t for Thor constantly beating this guy, he might be #1 on the list. He’s FAST, and he has so many different powers. He can basically do almost anything he wants.

3. Superman
It was a tough call to place Superman ahead of Sentry. But I think Superman is more mentally tough than Sentry, even though on paper, Sentry’s powers should give him a huge advantage over Superman. He’s behind Surfer because Surfer could just turn the sun’s radiation (the source of Superman’s powers) into Kryptonite radiation. And he would know about his weakness also because he does have that ability. (See his conversation with Gladiator).

4. Sentry
If he wasn’t such a mental case, he’d have a good case for being #2 or even #1 if Thor hadn’t beatn him too. (he also KILLED him in a What If). Its clear Marvel wants Thor ahead of Sentry.

I happen to own the comic you are talking about.

I know exactly what you are talking about. But lets see this:

The fight in crossover classics was not even a fight. Superman let Hulk to take his best shots at him. Superman did not even strike back and Superman was the one who end the fight. How does that look good for the Hulk???
Now they have to create a plot and the superman of that era completely outclassed HULK in every department. PC superman was able to move all the planets of a galaxy with out effort, he was faster than Flash. There was no way, Hulk could have defeated Superman. the only way HULK could have defeated Superman was with PIS.
Superman took the best HULK shots and he did not even moved!!!
The only fight that was on the line it was if HULK could be able to move Superman, because back then Superman have the power of being unmovable if he wanted to. So that was the only fight going on the comic. That is waaaaaaaaaaaaay different of Superman ACTUALLY fighting against the HULK.

HULK vs Superman in crossover classics looks like a Kid fighting against an Adult. it is that bad for HULK.

What is Superman doing?

Don’t tell me about bias blinding facts because it shows the opposite.

You seem to forget also that in the same series Batman KO the HULK and that was absolute PIS!!!

Superman can be defeated the same as any other character. But We are talking here about who is the most powerful and Hulk is no more powerful than Superman or Thor. I’m sure HULK is stronger than THOR, but I’m not sure if HULK is stronger than Superman, because of the infinite rage factor.

I KNOW in theory HULK could be stronger, but I have never seen it on practice. There is only FEW feats of HULK that can be compared to Superman’s

and if WWH is the ultimate HULK then I really doubt that He is stronger than Superman. WWH can destroy a planet, SO?
MODERN SUPERMAN has been smashed between two planets and survived, those two planets were APOKOLIPS AND NEW GENESIS.
Have you made the calculation on the shadow moon feat? Superman pulverized the thing.
Superman can also shatter a planet with the SHOCKWAVES of his punches!!! He is not EVEN touching the planet.
Superman is not undefeatable, but I’m sure, SUPERMAN is more powerful than HULK, BECAUSE EVIDENCE POINTS AT IT.
There is a reason on why I don’t argue that FULL OF THOR is more powerful than Superman, you know why?
Because I KNOW HE IS. If FULL OF THOR is as powerful as his dad, then He can destroy a galaxy, because ODIN was able to destroy galaxies.
EVIDENCE POINTS THAT ODIN IS MORE POWERFUL THAN MODERN SUPERMAN.

I never said you hyped the book, GREG PAK hyped his book by saying that his HULK was the ultimate most powerful HULK EVER. Not you, but GREG.

FULL Odin Force Thor is more powerful than MODERN Superman.

CURRENT plot device Odin Force Thor getting humiliated by RULK is NOT more Powerful than Superman.

The CURRENT Thor lost most of his Odin Force repairing Mjolnir. This current Thor is NOT more powerful than modern Superman.
