Top 10 Most Powerful Superheroes of All Time
Here it is folks, the biggest debate on the whole interweb. Never has there been a more well thought out argument for a completely non-existent thing. Which superhero could beat up which other superhero. Never has a group of people spent more time drawing graphs, doing calculations, making charts, and writing computer programs to prove that the hero they love is in fact the toughest. These people do more literature searches than a graduate student writing their dissertation on literature. One can only imagine what world problems could be solved if comic book nerds would instead focus this same energy on say; poverty, healthcare, the climate, pollution, the economy, childhood obesity, cancer, sudden infant death syndrome, racism, genetic disorders, violence against women, the melting ice caps, sending a man to mars, depression, solving Goldbach’s conjecture, creating a unified field theory, un-raveling the mystery of DNA, figuring out what happened before the big bang, resolving religious tensions in the Middle East, finding peace on Earth, making cleaner cars, sustainable energy, nuclear fission, getting rid of hippies, and the million other things that would make this world a better place to live in.
So in order to finish this debate once and for all we here at OW have finally finished THE list of the most powerful superheros. This is it folks. As every faithful reader knows that we here at OW are always right, we have proved it in the past. There can no longer be any debate. No more argument required. This list has taken us years to complete, and has threatened to destroy all that is OW. While making this list there was lots arguing, name calling, some shouting, a little bit of snuggling, more shouting, lots of your momma’s, but we finally came up with the definitive list of the most powerful superheroes of all time. We can’t be more clear on that last point, this is it. None of what you are about to read is opinion, it is fact. Next time one of your nerd buddies starts to argue you need only refer to this list, kindly pat him the head a give him one of the problems listed above to argue about. Here’s how we did it. First we excluded all super villains, this is heroes only, next we eliminated all exorbitantly overpowered cosmic beings (Phoenix, Odin, or the Highfather). And finally we ignored all heroes that would be considered ‘normal’ but have similar powers as those listed below. Then we plugged in all the facts and figures into the OW super computer and waited. Exactly 137 days later the answer was spit out. It then took us one year to figure out what that answer meant. Finally its over these are the most powerful superheroes. Fact.
10. The Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)
Despite coming in at number 10, The Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) is one tough hombre. As a member of the Green Lantern Corps, he wields a power ring that can generate a variety of effects and energy constructs, sustained purely by the ring wearer’s strength of will. The greater the user’s willpower, the more effective the ring. The limits of the power ring’s abilities are never defined, but it has been referred to as “the most powerful weapon in the universe” on more than one occasion. It’s precious. Over the years, the ring has been shown capable of accomplishing almost anything within the imagination of the ring bearer. Often the rings are used to form solid-light constructs, the power and size of which are limited only by the ring-bearer’s willpower. And, if that wasn’t powerful enough, DC recently (in 2006) retconned the ring’s longtime lack of effect on yellow objects, stating that the ring-bearer need only feel fear and overcome it in order to affect yellow objects. With his protective bubbles and mean green energy bursts, the Green Lantern has fought with, and at varying times against, such heavyweights as Superman and Captain Marvel. But he’s still no match for number 9 on our list…9. Professor X
So how does someone whose Kryptonite is stairs make it onto the list of the ten most powerful superheroes of all time? Well, despite being wheelchair-bound, Professor Charles Xavier is one of the most powerful heroes in comic-dom. Born a mutant, Professor X is the world’s most powerful telepath. He is able to read or project his thoughts into minds within a radius of hundreds of miles. He can psionically manipulate the minds of others, warp perceptions to make himself seem invisible or project illusions, cause loss of particular memories, and induce pain or temporary mental and physical paralysis. Within close range, he can manipulate almost any number of minds for such simple feats. Taking it a step further, against one opponent he take full possession of their mind, although he must strictly be within that being’s physical presence. He can even project powerful mental bolts of psionic energy, enabling him to stun the mind of another being into unconsciousness and completely shut down minds and bodies, or cause death. But, while Professor X may possess the most powerful melon on Earth (and one of the most powerful in the galaxy), his delicate body would prove to be too much a liability against the other eight powerhouses on this list.8. Black Bolt
Our seventh most powerful superhero of all time is Black Bolt, the king of the offshoot of humanity known as the inhumans. Black Bolt has often been described as one of the most powerful superheroes in the Marvel universe by other heroes, and for good reason. Through electron gathering and manipulation, Black Bolt can increase any aspect of his physical nature to superhuman levels, including his strength, speed, stamina and durability. In times of great need, he can channel this power into a single devastating punch called “The Master Blow”. He can also harness the electrons for matter transformation; the controlled projection of energy as concussive blasts or quasi-solid particle/electron fiends, broadcasting jamming frequencies, and flight. But Black Bolt’s most salient offensive weapon is his cacophonous voice, as a hypersonic shout that can level an entire city, and his merest whisper has been shown capable of stunning the Hulk. It’s even been suggested that his voice is capable of destroying an entire planet.7. The Sentry
Empowered by an enigmatic professor’s secret formula, The Sentry absorbs solar radiation for strength and moves his molecules an instant ahead of the normal timeline. His superpowers include super strength, speed, stamina, and senses, along with the power to create energy fields and of course the power of unaided flight. He also possesses a number of mental powers, having displayed the ability to implant his memories into another person’s mind. To top all that off, he emits a form of radiation that calms down the Hulk, severely limiting the Jade giant’s rage-fueled powers. It’s been mentioned a number of times that he possesses the power of “a million exploding suns” and that he is “the most powerful human in the galaxy”. Unfortunately, his primary weakness appears to be his mental instability, as he is often referred to as an agoraphobic schizophrenic, and he is very susceptible to mental manipulation and inculcation.Pages: 1 2

Somebody should make top 10 most powerful supervillians
and Thanos vs Darkseid.
Bear in mind That Thanos always provides the meanings to defeat himself, He might be more powerful than current avatar darkseid, but this little flaw tips the balance in favor of darkseid
November 21st, 2009 at 3:08 am
Starkie…..
Well, 13 years seriously, but 21 years total.
And yeah, I prefer DC, but I do like both. Also read some WildStorm, and a little VERTIGO. Yeah, DC OWNS VERTIGO, and some of their titles actually take place in the DC Universe(like the Zatanna limited series, the SWAMP-THING comics, CONSTANTINE and BOOKS OF MAGIC, the comics with the ENDLESS, ect.), but THE INVISIBLES and 100 BULLETS certainly aren’t related to the DCU.
And by 10 top in Marvel, you mean what I think are the most powerful, or the top 10 characters I like?
November 21st, 2009 at 7:26 am
Delta.
…
I seriously hope you have a job and a hobby, and don’t waste all of your life leaving 3 page long comics to lists on the internet that nobody in the entire world who means squat gives a crap. Get a girlfriend. or a hobby. or at least some minor social skills.
i don’t mean to be rude, but you honestly must have wasted hours on these meaningless comments and if you can’t figure that out on your own, then i may need to be even more clear.
November 21st, 2009 at 1:29 pm
Hey Tim, who is more pathetic and in more need of a life? Myself, who doesn’t go out of his way to bother you, or you just doing this? I’ll give you a small hint. It’s you.
And considering I’m married, I guess I don’t need a girlfriend, do I?
November 21st, 2009 at 6:38 pm
Gladiator should be #1 on this list. He has destroyed Thor in the past.
November 21st, 2009 at 7:01 pm
Superman should be number 1.
November 21st, 2009 at 8:24 pm
Delta, have you ever met anyone that has had greater comic book knowledge than you?
November 21st, 2009 at 8:41 pm
Fernando…..
Superman is so far and above Gladiator that it’s quite the joke to say Gladiator should be #1. Superman’s feats are demonstratively quite superior, and Superman has many comparable and superior feats over Gladiator when Superman was a good deal weaker than he is now. Superman is stronger, faster flier, faster in combat speed/reflexes, more durable, and has greater versatility. And I assume has more powerful Heat Vision, as I’ve never heard of anything particularly impressive from Gladiator in that department.
Plus, hasn’t Thor also owned Gladiator? I recall him being KOed with a lightning bolt against the Eric Masterson Thor.
November 21st, 2009 at 8:42 pm
Jim…..
If I have come across people who know more about comics than me, it hasn’t been clearly demonstrated.
Of course if I ever meet Mark Waid I guess I’ll say I have met someone who knows more.
November 21st, 2009 at 9:44 pm
Delta..
I mean your top ten most powerful marvel. I’m stil decidin mine, takin my time tho, makin sure i get it right! Lol i just wondered what yours is to ‘compare notes’ so to say.
November 21st, 2009 at 10:02 pm
Tim…
This is supposed to be a debate about comic book superhero’s. You didn’t mention anything about it. Why are you on here…? I no delta sometimes goes on a bit and can be rude. But thats just the PASSION! lol and he does always refer to COMIC BOOKS which is wat we’re here for…
November 21st, 2009 at 2:22 am
Well Starkie, this isn’t so much of a top-10 list as choices, that haven’t been listed yet. So no particular order…..
Sersi, Thor, Silver Surfer, X-Man, Doctor Strange, Black Bolt, Sentry, Genis-Vell/Photon/Captain Marvel, and maybe the current Ms. Marvel. Going by the lists criteria of no “clones” or not too well known characters.
Other wise possibilities would include Quasar(too similar to Green Lantern) and Beta Ray Bill(who we all know is pretty much Thor with another personality).
Remember, that’s not a LIST, just a group of characters without a particular order.
November 21st, 2009 at 4:12 pm
Delta, I just read your answer to my posting. I thank you for background on Dark Knight Return & why you don’t believe is a part of the continuity.
November 21st, 2009 at 4:56 pm
You’re welcome Big Guns. But it’s not in continuity, for the main-stream DC Earth. I think it might be an alternate Earth since the multiverse was brought back, but it’s not cannon for New Earth.
November 21st, 2009 at 5:07 am
No Wonder Woman? That makes this Wizard list an automatic fail….the omission of Phoenix I might understand since it was introduced as evil and is not exactly Jean’s true form
Lantern is not at the bottom, LMAO
A GL would be way ahead of any version Hulk, heck even Goku or Malibu’s Prime would own Hulk. Throw him into the Sun, job done.
Black Bolt? Maybe he deserves to be here, I still think Wonder Woman or a GL beats him easy.
Current Surfer might be at the top because in his current form he shames even Odin Force Thor and owned Beta Ray with two blows.
and Sentry well he just Sucks!
Your old 1998 list was better Wizard, this one just stinks
November 21st, 2009 at 11:11 am
That looks like a good selection, i’m especially liking the x-man and genis-vell choices, i’m just putting together my top 10 most powerful from marvel an my next post wil include it, from your friendly neighbourhood stoner
November 21st, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Starkie, do you even know about Sersi?
November 21st, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Stellar…..
There is a redo of the list in the works that sounds like you’ll be a bit happier with, but…..
This is Old-Wizard, not WIZARD MAGAZINE’s website.
I have to laugh.
November 21st, 2009 at 3:13 pm
I think dark knigth was one of the possible futures of DC’s at that time. I said possible
On current DC Dark knight is no longer a possible future, too manu things have changed, like president Reagan being dead. and the introduction of 2 more robins into the universe.
November 21st, 2009 at 3:29 pm
I just tought of a great way of Superman defeating Hulk, without even touching him.
Laser lobotomy removing the medula oblangata.
Superman does not need to kill the Hulk and he wins.
November 21st, 2009 at 1:59 am
Delta…
Yes i do, it was a shock to see her name, but it was a good choice, one i overlooked anyway! Lol i’ve got my 10, just putting them in order, this face is turning out to be more difficult than i thought. I can’t make my mind up!
November 21st, 2009 at 2:17 am
Yeah, Sersi’s a bit obscure now(though she had her heyday in the 90’s), but she’s quite powerful. She was stated to be the most powerful member of the Avengers that included Wonder Man and I think the Eric Masterson Thor.
And yeah, it’s hard to make-up your mind on how to order 10 characters. See why I didn’t give you a list, just names that would make my list? While I could give a general list, giving a Top 10 that I would put as for-sure my opinion is a lot more difficult.
November 21st, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Ok it took me a little while but here’s my top 10 just from marvel. I’m not giving reasons cause i haven’t got the time, but if you want to ask about any of my choices feel free…
deadpool
10) doctor spectrum
9) cardiac
7) nova
6) scarlet witch
5) black bolt
4) wonder man
3) sentry
2) genis-vell/ captain marvel
1) thor and silver surfer. I couldn’t make my mind up! Lol
November 21st, 2009 at 1:43 pm
um Starkie, why would you have Cardiac, Deadpool, and Nova(which Nova?) on your list? Especially above Doctor Spectrum? They’re nowhere near powerful enough to make this list, with a possible exception of Nova, depending on which one.
I don’t even think Cardiac or Deadpool are as powerful as Spider-Man. And he sure as fuck doesn’t deserve a spot on a Top 10 Most Powerful list.
November 21st, 2009 at 2:23 pm
Yeah that makes sense. The reason i put deadpool on is cause i watched the wolverine movie last night an he kicks ass in that film! He’s slowly becoming one of my favourite characters. And i only put cardiac in to see who’d know him. A sort of test, which as i expected you passed delta with flying colour might i add by mentioning spider man, the guy who cardiac lost against! I’m replacing cardiac with spider man
November 21st, 2009 at 2:30 pm
Oh and it’s the latest nova, the most powerful one i think…? And there is no doctor strange cause i’ve never been a fan of his, i personaly don’t think he’s all that. But that’s just my view, and no hulk cause i think he is overrated.
November 21st, 2009 at 8:14 pm
You might not like Doctor Strange, but he’s a thousand times more powerful than Cardiac, Spider-Man, and Deadpool combined. And probably the Herald Nova, who Morg killed, was the most powerful.
November 21st, 2009 at 2:26 pm
yeah well i think is that goku is the most powerfull superhero
November 21st, 2009 at 1:30 am
Yeah, well, you’d be wrong.
November 21st, 2009 at 5:39 pm
LOL
Now that your dam dragon ball z a$$ home and let grow folks talk.
November 21st, 2009 at 11:39 am
Let’s see the Top 10 ignorant cliches I’ve become accustomed to seeing on here.
10| Beta Ray Bill Is Much More Powerful Than Thor!!: Few actually back-up this claim, and no one’s actually given any reasons that aren’t either moronic or don’t hold water.
9| Magneto Should Be #1!! He’ll Own Everyone!!: Not really. Too many characters with more raw power, versatility, or both.
8| Batman Should Be On This List. He’s Always Beaten Superman!!: Wrong on both accounts. And using equipment and planning that you normally don’t carry on you doesn’t make you powerful compared to how you normally operate.
7| Wolverine Is Teh Most Powahfall EVAH!!!!!: Can I get a “HELL NO?”
6| Thor Is Stronger Than Superman: Nope, Superman’s the stronger one, due to demonstrative feats. It would also be nice if more than 15% of people who claim this would actually give SOME kinda reason.
5| THANOS SHOULD BE #1!!!!!: Thanos is a villain…..
4| JEAN GREY’S THE MOST POWERFUL!!!! No. For one, X-Man was more powerful than her, unless she significantly drew on the Phoenix Force. Then she’d be too powerful. Some of the shit X-Man pulled-off was bordering too powerful.
3| Gladiator’s More Powerful Than Superman!!: WRONG. And him being a Superman rip-off disqualifies him from the list entirely, even if he were actually more powerful than Superman.
2| Doctor Manhattan Should Be #1 Even Though I Have No Real Reason!!: Well, you got the you don’t have a damn reason part right.
And the #1 most ignorant/idiotic cliche used here is….!
HULK IS TEH NUMBAH WON MOS POWAHFELL EVAH!!!!!!
November 21st, 2009 at 2:20 pm
I would like to said you are wrong but you are not.
Very good list Delta enough said.
November 21st, 2009 at 2:57 pm
Wolwerine should be #1
He has his claws that can cut the Hulk, and He probably can make sushi out of Galactus + He can’t die and He injured Thanos in the Infinity Gauntlet.
Plus his attitude is really kick ass, He is always smoking a cigar, He defeated LOBO!!!
He can cut Thor’s hands and Silver Surfer’s skin.
And that is not even using his wild state.
How is that for moronic?
November 21st, 2009 at 3:10 pm
I really can’t picture ProfesSor X as a top tier. I mean, yes I know he is a powerful telepath, but I think other guys have more power then him.
What happen with Captain Marvel, Flash, Beta Ray Bill, the Spectre (unless he is not considered a superhero anymore). I’m sure any of those guys will give a good fight, to earn one spot here
November 21st, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Or is because “clones” does not count
November 21st, 2009 at 9:14 pm
Alberto…..
Professor X is going to be taken off the list in the revision if I recall correctly. Spectre would be considered too powerful. Even though he’s technically a hero, or at least has been, he’s in the Entity realm. Beta Ray Bill would be disqualified.
November 21st, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Hey Delta is their any other big move going to be done to the list?
November 21st, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Hey, Delta is there going to be any other big move done to the list?
November 21st, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Well, Hulk may or may not stay on the list, but I’ll put it either way they sure as FUCK won’t be happy, even IF he stays on. There’ll be new editions, like Zeromage mentioned on Thor VS Superman that I convinced him on how powerful Flash is, and he’s making sure Flash’ll be on the list for the revision. Also some reworking of the ordering.
November 21st, 2009 at 12:03 am
I just want to show here what is Torquasm-Vo, because I remember, somebody asking what the hell was that. This was the esiest explination I found
“What is Torquasm-Vo?
Torquasm-Vo is an ancient Kryptonian mental/fighting discipline that allows a master to allow their consciousness to rise into a higher state (Theta) and fight opponents on a mental plane. Superman is currently attempting to master this technique.
He’s currently beaten:
Dominus
Eradicator
Satannus”
I think they also call it Torquasm Rao.
The explination the writers gave for this power to work is that Kryptonians have a better control over his senses and brains than regular humans.
Another explanation I found on why Superman is a superior Kryptonian is because, while most kryptonians have no defects, except for the one engineered so they can’t leave krypton. Superman was completely engineered to be the perfect kryptonian.
I also found that Superman knows a type of kryptonian science so advanced that it will look like magic for the regular human
I will like to know if anyone out there knows all the powers of Superman. cough!(Delta)
I don’t know if this is correct, I’m just posting it and I’m sure Delta will correct any mistakes
November 21st, 2009 at 12:16 am
I believe Torquasm Rao was actually the Kryptonian Martial Art he learned and started practicing. Torquasm Vo was the mental discipline that borders reality manipulation, but related.
And one reason Superman’s superior to other Kryptonians is he’s a descendant of Rao, the Kryptonian sun god. The House Of El descend directly from him.
November 21st, 2009 at 12:17 am
I’ll make a full list of Superman’s powers, and special abilities through his powers, later.
November 21st, 2009 at 12:38 am
Wolverine can actually die. You must cut his head off and I don’t really think his claws would be a problem for Superman or others like Solomon Grundy and AMAZO (Yes, they are villains but I think we should maybe think adding AMAZO since he helped the JLA). AMAZO should be first.
November 21st, 2009 at 12:50 am
Wat do you think the chances are of seein genis-vall on this new list…? I think he was overlooked personally, your views delta? How have you bin by the way?
November 21st, 2009 at 7:41 am
ShadowHunter…..
um Where did you get Amazo helping the JLA? Only time I’m aware of, was a reprogrammed Amazo in a potential future in the ROCK OF AGES storyline during JLA #10-#15. Not like Amazo would HAVE any problems with Wolverine.
But I doubt decapitation is the only way to kill Wolverine, that’s just the best, by Professor X’s studies, to.
Solomon Grundy COULD have trouble with Wolverine, depending on which resurrection he’s in(some have had strength that only took several normal human men to stop, some could hold their own against Superman), but also because he’s slower and dumber than Wolverine. Not like Wolverine could actually DO anything to him, it could just be hard for Grundy to actually put him down, depending on how strong the incarnation is, and hard for him to actually connect.
November 21st, 2009 at 7:51 am
Starkie…..
Considering Genis isn’t very popular or well known, I doubt he’d pass the criteria to be on the list, regardless of power. Though I know he other-wise deserves at least consideration. He did well against King Thor, when Thor actually had a good deal of Odin-Force, helped destroy AND recreate the Universe, owned an entire armada of a Kree, Badoon and Shi’Ar alliance. And more.
Quasar’s someone else who’s definitely powerful enough to at least be considered for the list, but due to his similarities to Green Lantern, he’s disqualified. Some feats include withstanding a blast from Terminus, owning a Watcher who was ACTUALLY FIGHTING(unlike what happened with Rulk VS a Watcher), surviving an explosion that destroyed the Earth and Moon, stalemating Heralds(Silver Surfer and Firelord, though Surfer he purposely lost to due to finding-out he was fighting for the wrong side), the Rachel Summers Phoenix, and doing somewhat well against Thanos wielding the Infinity Gauntlet. And more.
November 21st, 2009 at 8:08 am
So here’s a list of powers and abilities Superman’s displayed to my knowledge, that I’ve seen myself.
Invulnerability.
Superhuman Stamina.
Super Strength.
Flight.
Super Speed(can turn invisible, intangible, or create destructive vibrations).
“Super Vision”(X-Ray/Telescopic/Microscopic Vision, sees through-out the entire electromagnetic spectrum, “Soul Vision,” “4-D Vision”)
Super-Hearing.
Super Sense Of Smell/Taste.
Superhuman Sense Of Touch.
Heat Vision(can be used as a melting/disintegrating beam, or focused into a LASER for cutting).
“Super Breath”(can be used to freezing opponents/objects, blowing them away, or “vacuuming” deadly gasses, pulling objects to him, ect.).
A “Super-Voice”(has been used to destroy some objects, counter frequencies, deafen others, even displace massive amounts of water).
Energy Absorption/Draining.
Healing Factor.
Torquasm Vo(has been used for equivalents to telepathic communication, creating illusions, countering reality manipulation, and more).
“Immortality”(in the sense of he can live at least a really really long time, if not out-right can’t die of old age).
I suppose I should include “Superhuman Will.” Superman’s done everything from overcome a Skyfather-level demon’s spell to turn him into a demon, overcame various telepaths, overcame mental attacks from Neron(basically DC’s Mephisto), and overcoming being killed by an Egyptian death god. So I guess I should include that.
He’s also done stuff like created vastly powerful amounts of electricity(one time powerful enough to create a magnetic field capable of containing a black hole, another patching a hole in reality), and has even manipulated the weather before.
November 21st, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Thanks for the list
November 21st, 2009 at 2:53 pm
It’s a shame if he does get overlooked cause as you’ve stated he is quite powerful, maybe a number 7 or 8 spot…. Would be nice but i’m not holding my breath. Do you know when this list is gonna be made? Think everyone’s itching to find out! Lol
November 21st, 2009 at 3:03 pm
Nope, dunno when it’s going to come-out. I was asked to, and am working on, two of the blurbs for it, but it doesn’t seem to be in a rush.
Maybe a sub-list can be made of “Honorable Mentions” for characters who’d other-wise be disqualified from the list.
