Mega Man X was filled with much more creative bosses than the original Mega Man series for the NES. Its not like we’re knocking the original series, but the name “Boomer Kuwanger” is much more inspired than “Hard Man”. In this list, we’ll go through what we think were the top ten bosses from the Mega Man X series. Most of the choices will be from the first three Mega Man X’s as we feel that the series started to spiral downward after the initial three in the series (like most video games series). Mega Man X 1 has the most placements in this list. We feel the most creative bosses came from this initial game in the series. Here then are our top ten Mega Man X bosses.

    10. Chill Penguin

mega_man_x_chill_penguin_title.pngChill Penguin is the first boss to fight in the Mega Man X series. He doesn’t have great defense, has little speed, and his offense is nothing but some ice statues being thrown at you. With that being said, he is animationally well designed and looks scary when you first see his face. Another hint that he’s the first boss that you should beat in the game, is that X automatically encounters Dr. Light in the Ice Stage level in order for X to obtain the dash skill which he will need throughout the game. Chill Penguin is like the Glass Joe of the Mega Man X series. For this easy introductory passage into the game, we have to put him on this list.

    9. Blizzard Buffalo

Blizzard Buffalo was a reploid from Mega Man X3. He was the same type of character as Flame Mammoth except he had the winter elements at his side instead of the fire elements. His power is massive. One hit by Blizzard Buffalo and X would be short of energy quick. In terms of the winter elements, Blizzard Buffalo is the most powerful boss in all of the Mega Man series. He puts Chill Penguin’s Glass Joesque weakness to shame. For a boss as big as Blizzard Buffalo, you would think he wouldn’t have any agility. He has quickness with the best of the bosses in the series though. Keep your distance when fighting this beast or you will soon be starting the level over.

    8. Web Spider

Web Spider was one of the more interesting bosses in the Mega Man X series. We find him in Mega Man X 4 where he would move around his area via a web that would always be hard to evade when in battle. Throwing spider webs at you may not seem like the most powerful offense but it dealt great damage. Web Spider is a small little creature but don’t underestimate his defense. It would take many hits to knock this swift spider off his web. He’s got an angry face too. This would have an impact on any player of the series. Out of all the later X bosses, Web Spider was the most recognizable.

    7. Boomer Kuwanger

mega_man_x_boomer_kuwanger_title.pngBoomer Kuwanger may be the most agile maverick in the whole Mega Man X series. He wall jumps like Samus Aran on speed. He can transfer from place to place on a screen with such quickness it’s as if he was invisible. His weapon is a boomerang that can slice through the most hard armor. Its not a good idea to have X fight Kuwanger first as a special weapon is most certainly needed to beat this evasive reploid. When fighting Kuwanger, be prepared to be quick with the thumbs, if not, X will be left looking around everywhere while being smashed by a steel boomerang.

    6. Wheel Gator

We meet Wheel Gator in Mega Man X 2. His boss room is small, making it difficult for X to move anywhere. Wheel Gator hides below oil and comes striking up at X from random places, making the gamer paranoid of where he is when fighting him. When Wheel Gator isn’t hiding waiting to pounce on X, he’s throwing blades at him that can traverse all around the room making X have to leap into the oil where the Gator may be hiding. He is no walk in the park. Having a special weapon to defeat him is necessary. Stay away from those teeth, or X will become mince meat.

    5. Storm Eagle

mega_man_x_storm_eagle_title.pngStorm Eagle was a heroic looking figure that looked like he actually worked for the air force. His wind power could blow X off the aircraft he was fighting him on. He would swoosh down from both parts of the screen taking out loads of X’s energy. Storm Eagle was tall, quick, strong, and all around one of the more formidable bosses in the X series. The Mega Man X game player knew that his conspicuous pride would make for a difficult battle. If you didn’t stay on the middle of the screen throughout the battle, you would most surely be thrown off into impending doom. His wind attack would become one of X’s best weapons when fighting an inordinate amount of enemies. Storm Eagle is a hallmark of the greatness of the X series.

    4. Flame Stag

Flame Stage is pure power. With lightening speed, agility, and strength with the best of the maverick bosses, he would be one of the more difficult bosses in the Mega Man X series. His element was fire, specifically from a volcano. He could cross jump walls with the ease of a Chinese acrobat. His fire weapon would burn X to ashes if X didn’t enable his innate agility when needed. Before the fight, Flame Stag shows his muscles with a confidence not seen since Super Macho Man in Punchout. X would have to move across the screen consistently to beat this ferocious deer. Being lackadaisical on the controller would surely lead to X’s demise in this battle.

    3. Overdrive Ostrich

Overdrive Ostrich is a spooky reploid in Mega Man X 2 who can stomp on you from miles away. His boss stage is an entire desert where he can fall back into the background and pounce on you without you even knowing where he’s coming from. His metal cutter head can do enormous amounts of damage to the X character without auxiliary equipment. Overdrive Ostrich is tall, fast, agile, and powerful making him one of the more difficult bosses in the X series. His final stage is also one of the more creative points in Mega Man boss battles.

    2. Launch Octopus

mega_man_x_launch_octopus_title.pngLaunch Octopus was a funny looking character. Goofy in appearance but powerful in battle, Launch Octopus might have been the most difficult maverick boss in Mega Man X. Before the fight, he would let X know he was done for by pointing at him and pointing to the ground like a modern day sports star about to play their rival. His weapons were innumerous including seeking missiles that could follow X where he was on the screen. He could also create a whirlwind that would suck X into his body for a devastating loss of energy. Launch Octopus’s weapon was great to have. Being able to launch his seeking missiles at anyone on the screen would make future battles easier. He was always a must for this list.

    1. Flame Mammoth

mega_man_x_flame_mammoth_title.pngOne of the first bosses the Mega Man X player would face was a massive beast spewing out venomous fireballs and jumping across the entire screen at will. If X was on the ground, he would be stunned for a couple of seconds over the crash of Flame Mammoths fall to the ground. Before the battle, Flame Mammoth makes an elephantitis noise reflecting his reploid body. He’s large, strong, agile, and frightening in appearance, all the great things needed for a boss in the Mega Man series. Once you get the hang of fighting him, he’s pretty easy, but at first sight, he scares even the most intrepid of video gamers.

    Great article!

  3. Honestly, you make me want to whip out my SNES Megaman X’s and go to town on some bosses! :D

  4. Nice article. I agree with Osama, it makes me want to play these games.

  5. Do you only own the first game because half the bosses are from X and they are the only bosses you have screen shots of. Since when did a penguin look “scary” at any point in history? Flame Stag is pretty cool but I have a bias towards the fiery characters.

Isn’t Flame Stag a canine, and not a deer?
