Top 10 Games on the Wii
Its no secret that our favorite seventh gen console here at Old-Wizard.com is the Wii. As a matter of fact, you’d have to go back to 1995 when the PS1 was first released to find the last time that my favorite console wasn’t made by Nintendo. Of course its often claimed by people who don’t agree with us about the Wii that while it is innovative, it has no good games. This is a dumb claim. And its this claim that we’re out to disprove with this list. This was not a difficult task for us. We play these next ten games almost as much as the best games for the older Nintendo systems, and we’re certain that in time these games will prove to be timeless classics and will make it difficult for anyone to say that the Wii “has no games”.10. Star Wars The Force Unleashed
The Force Unleashed starts you off as Vader flying down to the wookie planet to kill a bunch of wookies. This may have be disconcerting for some Star Wars fans, but once they realized that they were experiencing the true power of the force, they had to let their sentimentality fall victim to the power of the dark side. After this, you become the apprentice and everything goes back to normal again, except that you’re playing in one of the best Star Wars video games world of all time. The visuals are amazing throughout the game. The environments in the game look better than they did on screen in the prequel movies. Of course the most fun to be had in the game is using the force as you continually gain more of its power. Throwing people into walls is immense fun, so much so, you wish you could do it in real life.
9. Excite Truck
You thought Excite Bike was fun? You thought Excite Bike was fast? Wait until you play Excite Truck. You get Nitro’s like in Super Off Road, you fly off cliffs so high you can’t see the ground below you, and the incandescent terrains change along with the immense speed of your truck in the game. Controlling the game is very simple and intuitive, with the player being able to use either the accompanying Wii wheel or a regular controller. The best part about Excite Truck though is its infinite playability factor. With all the trucks you can use and all the diverse landscapes to be played throughout the game, Excite Truck never becomes tiresome.
8. Tiger Woods PGA Tour
Tiger Woods PGA Tour is the most innovative golf game to be released for any video game system. What really separates the Wii’s take on Tiger Woods 09 from its cousins on the 360 and PlayStation 3 are the motion-sensitive controls. You simply point the Wii Remote toward the floor and hold down the B button to take over the golfer’s movements, then pull back and push forward as if you were swinging a real golf club. Remarkably golf-like action then ensue. Outside of Wii Sports, there has never been a golf game on any other system that has used this technology. Leave it to Nintendo to come up with something this creative.
7. Super Paper Mario
Graphically, Super Paper Mario is stunning. The level designs are a first, and prove to be one of the more unique moments for the Wii. Less “Paper Mario” than “Super Mario”, the game returns Mario to his 2-D roots. Gone are turn-based battles, and in their place, good ‘ole hoppin’ and boppin’ fun, like in the old days, but with one clever twist. When your character is faced with, say, an impossible jump, you can simply “flip” yourself into three dimensions, the result of which is often the opening of a new path, or the emergence of a hidden pipe, etc. It’s a clever twist on the 2-D gameplay of the old Mario games of the Nintendo and Super Nintendo. On top of this, we get remixes of all the classic Mario music from the past, especially Mario 3, which is an obvious gift to any enthusiastic Mario player.
6. Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Retro finds its finale of the Metroid Prime series in “Corruption”, and what a finale it is. The story line is immense, the world is immense and Samus has to fight Ridely in his most nefarious and powerful form. You’re fighting Dark Samus again where the Phazon plague has one again spread. The visuals of this game are astonishing from serene vistas to nimble enemies that are perfectly animated. The best part about Corruption though is being able to use the Wii nunchuck as a gun. No more controlling a gun with a mere controller. You could be Samus herself destroying everything in your path. If you’re a hardcore gamer though (and we know how hardcore gamers typically are, which we go into in “The Top 10 reasons to know if you’re a hard core video gamer”) we don’t recommend that you actually try to dress like Samus. Just controlling her weapon is good enough.
5. Mario Kart Wii
When Mart Kart was released for the Wii, it was going to be a success. Every other game in the series showed off some of the best multiplayer action in the racing medium. Many of the same aspects of the old Mario Karts are brought back for Mario Kart Wii, but there are also some obvious differences, like the wheel that comes with the game. This addition makes you feel like you’re playing Mario Kart in a long forgotten arcade. This is a huge plus for the racing gamer who wants to feel more “in the driver seat”. The depth of the graphics is something to write home about also. The karts in this game are seen in a more detailed way than the previous games in the series. Mart Kart Wii is simply a great addition to an already massively successful series.
4. Wii Bowling
When one bought the Wii and found the Wii sports collection attached to it, they were overjoyed to find a game as perfect as Wii bowling. Using the ingenious controller of the Wii, you could bowl in your home while feeling almost like being in a bowling alley. The characters certainly looked different from the regular human beings in the bowling alley, but your control of the ball was virtually the same which was a great feat for the Wii. Not only was the controlling perfect, but the sounds were excellent making crash sounds against the pins that sounded hugely satisfying when hitting a strike. Wii Bowling was the best game in the exceptional Wii sports collection. The Wii is worth purchasing for this game alone!
3. Super Smash Brother Brawl
Leave it to Nintendo to come up with a fighting game with no blood, no visible injuries and still make it fun and highly addictive. .There is an endless amount of fun to be had with Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Hours upon hours of multiplayer action in games like SSBB makes Wii one of the best multiplayer systems of all time. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced gamer, you’ll be able to enjoy the massive amount of games to played in Super Smash Brother Brawl. The graphics might not be too much of an improvement on its predecessor, but the mini-games certainly have and the controlling especially has become smoothed out with the hugely innovative Wii controller. When it comes to replayability, its hard to think of game that is better in this category than Super Smash Brothers Brawl. With lots of interesting “level-ups” and plot twists, plus all the great Nintendo characters we’ve all come to know and love, this game is a must have for anyone who has a Wii.
2. Twilight Princess
Zelda “Twilight Princess” is one of the greatest games in the entire Zelda series. After playing through the game once, one became aware that Twilight Princess even challenged the original Zelda 1 for the title of “greatest Zelda game of all time”. Why is Twilight Princess such a great game? First off, Twilight Princess is a huge game, with one of the longer journeys in the Zelda series. There are numerous worlds to traverse and dungeons to delve into. There are the standard collection of mini-games, quests, things to collect, and puzzles to solve. You could easily play this game for months and not be done. The feeling of nostalgia that one has when playing Twilight Princess is also overwhelming. Many of the older themes are redone for the 3D format in a way that isn’t too flashy. Instead, Twilight Princess seems like your playing one of the older Zelda games, but in a 3D world with more iridescent graphics. Anyone who has played this game understands how great it is.
1. Super Mario Galaxy
I don’t mind saying that Mario Galaxy is the best video game to be released since the SNES stopped making games. The graphics are breath-taking, showing a depth and imagination not seen in most modern video games. The soundtrack is simple and eloquent as Mario surfs the different galaxies in search of the Princess. But the best part of the game is how fun and different it is. Up until I played SMG, it seemed to me like modern day video game designers have forgotten how to make fun games. Even though it seems like you might have already done this or that in another game, SMG adds a completely different twist to it that makes it so more exciting and fun than anything you have ever played before. Super Mario Galaxy will completely revolutionize the way you think about platform games. And at this point the bar has been pushed so high by SMG that it’s light years beyond any other platformer that I have played or probably ever will play for years to come.

Big A2 says:
“I disagree, Twilight Princess was a great game, the gameplay was even more fun than Ocarina of Time’s. If you want to make it harder, than just ignore all the pieces of heart. Simple.”
Dude, and where is the part when you were stuck for days solving a puzzle? z:oot forest temple outside key and the water temple as a example. Believe me z:ttp wont be on a top 10 difficult dungeons.

Great list.
November 20th, 2009 at 11:33 am
Great list, perhaps could have included Resident Evil 4 but i guess it is a redux Gamecube game.
I’m so pleased to see Excite Truck on here because i’ve always thought this game is SO underrated. It’s absolutely awesome and i pray Nintendo release a sequel! There’s loads of unlockable content and once you think you’ve completed the game, you unlock mirror mode!
November 20th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
I have to agree with Big A2 on this one. Also, I’d love to see some of these puzzle games released for mobile phones, especially the Krave. I would love to see how game play would work on its crystal clear touch screen. I’ve been a fan of the krave ever since I started working with Motorola. Check it out online at motorola.com/krave. It’s awesome!

November 20th, 2009 at 9:21 pm
mario glaxy, first? super smash bros brawl is really good and zelda is awsome too. Not too sure about mario galaxy.
November 20th, 2009 at 11:55 am
Super Mario Galaxy is old school? It came out year out ago.
Also, Brawl doesn’t deserve top spot at all. It’s a fantasic game, but no where near as good as Zelda and Mario.

I think Zero Mage got in denial when he asked List Critic to see the list of the “10 ways to know you are a hardcore gamer”, and im assuming that because there is one that says “you leave angry messages at OW”.
I think that is not an accurate point you’re making Zero Mage. List critic is saying something that is true. I have a Wii and I have a gamecube but I dont see why I should play again the same games since they give me the same story and the same gameplay: mario kart (since SNES), smash bros (since n64) Metroid, maybe Zelda but why oh why is the same freakin story?
Nintendo may be selling a lot but they are like reality shows. Just redoing the same thing until people get bored with it.
Bring on different games not re do the same things.
And please Golf?, Excite Truck? BOWLING??? bowling in real life not in wii. (Golf not even in real life).
November 20th, 2009 at 2:31 am
A fine list to be sure, but they are ALL the Wii has and i could list at least 20 games or more at least on the PS3 that are as good at least as the best game on that list Mario galaxy. I own both systems and after beating said best games have not touched my wii for over 6 months.
November 20th, 2009 at 4:57 am
You need No More Heroes on that list. Otherwise, pretty Spot-On!
November 20th, 2009 at 3:39 pm
A2: Who said SMBG was old school?
November 20th, 2009 at 4:06 pm
Fire Emblem is the missing game I would include.
No Wiiware?
November 20th, 2009 at 6:32 pm
I am going to have to sign up to receive your feed. This is good stuff
November 20th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
Good list but I think Brawl shoud’ve been 1st galaxy is awesome possibly the best 3d mario game but I found it a bit too easy, the same goes with Twilight Princess, and i think Super Paper Mario is a bit overrated Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn should be in its place I dont get why critics give it such low scores just because its hard, thats what makes video games fun, the only easy games I’ve enjoyed are Galaxy, Twilight Princess, Luigi’s Mansion, and Super Mario 64 DS. But still good list
