174335115.jpgThe Mighty Thor and Superman are the heavy-hitters of Marvel and DC respectively, each of them arguably the most powerful hero in their respective universes. So its natural that this is without question the most discussed versus debate amongst comic book fans. No other versus battle comes close to being talked about as much than this one.  Try to start a “Superman vs Thor” thread on any forum and the first response is sure to be: “Not this again”.

Some of you may remember our “Top 10 Most Powerful Superheroes” list that we released a while back, where we made the controversial claim that Thor was the most powerful superhero of all time (Superman coming in at number three on that list). Months later we are still receiving emails either agreeing with us, or flaming us for that decision. Many fans cite Superman’s speed as the deciding factor in any fight between the two behemoths. Other emails claim that Thor’s magical powers would be enough to stop the man of steel in his tracks. So, the natural question is, do we still stand by our claim that Thor is more powerful than Superman? The answer is still “yes.” In this article we’ll break down the seven most common arguments and give you our take on them.

    1. Super Strength

The claim has often been made that Superman is stronger than Thor. Many times on versus forums threads this claim is accepted as a given by both sides of the debate. We don’t concede that the Man of Steel is physically stronger than the god of thunder though. Thor has performed feats such as lifting the World Serpent, and once hurled the Odinsword, an enormous mystical blade, through a Celestial!  Thor has also single-handedly matched the strength of the Hulk on numerous occasions (the Marvel Universe’s strongest character). Not only that but Thor is capable of entering into a state known as the “Warrior’s Madness”, which will temporarily increase his strength tenfold. Some of these feats have no true equivalent in the DC universe. We think at the very least, the two character’s physical strength is equal.

    2 . Super Speed

This is Superman’s one true advantage in this fight. Superman is fast. We’re talking warp speed fast. We’re talking once around the entire planet and back before you can blink fast. You could easily make the argument that Thor would be lucky if he even saw Superman before he got pounded. But is Thor as slow as everyone seems to think? Unknown to many DC fanboys Thor can throw his hammer at the speed of light (See Thor#140, Thor#274). He can also swing it at TWICE the speed of light (Journey Into Mystery#102). In Thor -#393- it’s established that the speed of Thor’s hammer TRANSCENDS both TIME & SPACE. In addition Thor can appear anywhere across the Universe or other dimensions in just seconds (see- FF#339, and Thor#166). And, most importantly, Thor could, visually, detect objects that move at fantastic speeds (this happened when Thor was the target of artillery fire- see Invaders#33- and Avengers-#281- when he saw the speedy Hermes. And yes, I do need a life). Now if we accept that Superman can move at 99% of the speed of light, and that Thor can swing his hammer at twice the speed of light, it stands to reason that big blue is in some trouble.  It’s true that Thor doesn’t use his super speed abilities often, but how many times have you seen Superman not use his super speed when he should have?

    3. Stanima

Who can take more punishment, Thor or Superman? This is a difficult question. Thor has withstood a blast from Asgardian Destroyer. Superman has withstood a direct hit from a nuclear bomb. Thor has taken everything the Hulk could dish out. Thor also once took a glancing hit by a Doomsday Bomb that was capable of destroying an entire planet, and soon after that explosion he fell from space (leaving a crater miles wide) to a planet called Pangoria-see Thor#387. Thor has also taken everything that Gladiator (an arguably more powerful version of Superman) could dish out.  Both characters have come back from the dead a couple of times. In my mind this one is a draw. Both characters have approximately the same stanima. The difference is Superman has weaknesses (i.e. Kryptonite, Magic, and the fact he is powerless without yellow sunlight) whereas Thor pretty much doesn’t.

    4. Magic

Even the most diehard Superman fan would concede that Thor’s magical abilities would be an advantage for Thor. First, I would like to note that just because an opponent can wield magic, it in no way guarantees a win over the last son of Krypton. Superman has defeated countless magic users in the past, and so I have no illusions that just because Thor has magic powers and a magic hammer that he would automatically own Superman. That being said magic is just as lethal against Supes as kryptonite. Superman has no defense against it, and it can affect him greatly. Superman getting pounded by Mjolnir is the same as you and me getting pounded by a normal hammer. And consider the guy who’s swinging it. It’s Thor. The god of thunder. Not only that, but Thor’s lightning is magical too. Remember that just a single lightning bolt is equivalent to 15,000,000 volts of electricity and could travel over 224,000 miles an hour. The clear advantage here goes to Thor.

    5. Super Powers

Before Thor inherited the Odinforce, the super powers of these two heroes were a little more even. Now there is absolutely no contest. Thor has a clear edge over Superman here. His magical hammer gives Thor the ability to control the weather, the ability to fly; energy projection and absorption; dimensional apertures; matter manipulation, as well as the most powerful of his offensive powers: the God Blast, and the Anti-Force. Superman is no push over in this department either, with the already mentioned super strength, super speed, as well as heat vision, x-ray vision, enhanced senses, and the ability to blow hurricane force winds from his mouth. But what is that compared to being able to summon an actual hurricane? Not only that but with the Odinforce Thor was then capable of feats such as reconstructing the Earth’s Moon, willing the Asgardian monster Mangog into nothingness, and by focusing his entire power into a hammer throw that even decapitated a Desak-occupied Asgardian Destroyer. Having accepted his heritage as the son of the earth goddess Gaea, he has recently been shown to be capable of opening chasms in the earth itself, and who knows what other abilities he’ll be displaying now that he’s done that.

    6. Superman beat Thor in the Avengers / DC Crossover

I don’t want to spend much time on this one. Most fans of comics know how much weight we should give to crossovers.  Besides, I personally have no doubt that Superman would beat Galactus in a crossover. He’s DC’s flagship character after all. Enough said on that one.

    7. Thor has Thousands of Years of Combat Experience

This is a common argument used by Thor fans to claim that Thor would take down Superman. It seems fairly obvious. If I somehow gained super powers and a Viking Warrior somehow gained the exact same or nearly equivalent powers, most people would put their money on the Viking if we fought each other. Now imagine the Viking warrior was thousands of years older than me, and had been using his powers for all those thousands of years to battle trolls, giants, demons, robots, aliens, and gods, and I have only been using my powers for 20-30 years. It seems clear to me that the Viking Warrior god has a clear cut advantage over me in a fight. Again advantage Thor.

It seems obvious to me that Thor has a clear advantage over Superman in a fight. I don’t think that Thor is so powerful that there is no way that Superman could ever defeat him. But I believe that the majority of the time Thor would beat Superman in a one on one fight, assuming its not a fight to the death. If it is a fight to the death, then I think Thor would almost invariably win. So there you have it, the definitive answer to one of the most talked about and controversial debates in comic book nerdom. Brought to you by your pals at Old-Wizard.com.

“They are canon fodder characters. Not even secondary characters, but canon fodder characters.

They are pretty much non-existent in the DC U.”

Does that mean Superman never went to Asgard?I do know Superman went to DC’s Version of Atlantis. Here’s what proves it.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/kilotwo/277564939/in/set-72157594341795296/

That’s the Article/Profile he made of Namor. Here’s what it says:

“He claims to be the Prince of Atlantis, but this water-breather’s certainly not from the Atlantis I know.Namor the Sub-Mariner has a noble bearing, but I suspect his hot temper and super strength make him a better warrior than monarch.”

This means he acknowledges the existence of a different Atlantis(Marvel Universe) at the same time he mentions the Atlantis from DCU as well.

    @Reporter

Let me see if I can explaint to you…

DC THOR is a canon fodder character, and therefore not a lot of people in DC cares what happens to him. If the plot of decides that He has to die, then so be it.
AS FAR AS I KNOW, there has never been a comic book title in DC called THOR.

There is at least 3 versions of THOR in DC. He might be the same guy in the 3 incarnations, He may not.

DC’s Thor was not even shown in the Marvel vs DC cards, BECAUSE, He is in FILLER character.

Jarvis or Alfred have a better chance to appear on those cards than DC’s Thor. They even have better chances to be mentioned on those cards than DC U Thor. Does than means that Jarvis or Alfred are more “powerful” than DC’s Thor?

If you are wondering if Superman went to Asgard, here.

    http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu200/biensalsa/Superman/UNTITL4.gif?t=1260974281

So, Superman went to Asgard, is the “original” Asgard? No, neither is Mrvel’s Asgard.
Is the “Original” Thor? No, neither is Marvel’s Thor.

Actually none of those are the true Asgard or Thor.
If you want to see those, then get a Norse Mythology Book, where you can actually read the true stories of the true Thor.

Not to be rude, but I wonder if all of your comic book knowledge comes out of a game card base on a saga that is no longer canon. Because if you do, you have a long way to go.

    I forgot to mention

Those 2 versions of Thor came AFTER Marvel vs DC

The first Version of Thor in DC was a long time ago in a Detective Comics issue along side Batman & Robin.

  4. Tony : Thor wins against who? Green Arrow?

Are you fucking brainhead? What’s the title of this article? Thor vs Green Arrow? Wow. Didn’t realize this site was visited by “special needs” kids.

  5. Big deal, Alberto, what exactly does that prove anyway? Obviously the DCU Thor is weaker than the Marvel Thor (as we know, most Marvel characters are usually more powerful than DC). Here’s is Thor surviving (or should I say beating) the MU Superman:

Did I say, it was a big deal?

I am just pointing to reporter that Superman did in fact went to Asgard and meet Thor.

“Obviously the DCU Thor is weaker than the Marvel Thor”

    Wrong AGAIN kid.

DC U Thor is LESS popular than Marvel Thor. That is WAY different than being weaker. Marvel Thor has better feats than Filler character DC U Thor, OF COURSE!!!
Anyway I’m not going to debate which Thor is more powerful, because is not possible, there is not enough evidence to show on DC U Thor side.

“(as we know, most Marvel characters are usually more powerful than DC)”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, You never stop, keep it up kid. Oh God did I miss you! :D

I did not know that Hulk beat the crap out of Thor on Onslaught Reborn.

Oh boy, does Loeb has a bad vibe with Thor?

Onslaught recognized Hulk as more powerful than Thor.

This are the same Heroes that returned to Universe 616.

    Anyone care to fill in?

    Silver Surfer
    Juggeranut
    Professor X
    Namor
    Iron Man
    All the X-men combined
    Gladiator

    HULK STRONGEST ONE THERE IS!!!!!!!!!!

Horace : Hulk… stronger than anyone? Cmon, Wonder Woman can beat him.

Tony : Calm down kid. Go take your bath. It was a joke. Anyway, Thor hasn’t prooved to be stronger than Superman. Give me proofs and we will talk about it later, alright? Thank you!

  14. #15 Alberto says:

    @Horace

You are way wrong Horace, I can see that You only read MARVEL. and that is why your list only have marvel characters. You don’t know squat about DC.

  15. Thor would win this fight. Besides being for all intents and purposes equal to Superman in strength and durability, Thor has his hammer. He also has vast energy manipulation powers, and most importantly magic. Thor has so many more powers than Superman its not even funny. From his soul drain, to godblast to the ability to stop time, and to even time travel (he’s only used the time travel once, but hey…)

He can open dimensional gates, he can teleport, he can energy drain equal to the Silver Surfer. His magic has been shown to be virtually on par with Dr. Strange (Doing some things even Strange wasn’t able to do).

Honestly Superman/Thor is no contest. Thor in a stomp.

Horse im a hulk fan but i gotta disagree with Hulk being the strongest there is. He fought sentry to a stand still..HE NEVER BEAT JUGGS..HE DIFFENTLY AINT BEAT SILVER SURFER (if he has then show me the issue)..Now for people thinking Wonder Women can beat Hulk…im iffy on that..Dont get me wrong now i think wonder women is badd ya dig..there is barely a handful that can stand toe to toe with her..but i think if she had to fight WWH..hulk would come out on top..she might have the upperhand for a bit but if she dont kill him early on(which she wouldnt) hulk would end up with the upperhand.
I;m sorry for the late comments on some of the post..but i have to address this..IF ANY BODY THINKS PRIME CAN FIGHT WITH GALACTUS has to be smoking sumtin crazy

    @Cartel

I think on the mageddon warhead, he absorbed the energy capable of destroying half of the universe or it was half of the galaxy?. I don’t remember exactly. I have to check. but it was a shit load of energy

  22. #23 Alberto says:
    March 16th, 2010 at 5:33 pm

Ok, it was half of the galaxy

  23. #24 ShadowHunter says:
    March 16th, 2010 at 5:33 pm

Cartel : Look at Gold Superman Prime. He went to live inside the sun. That gave him incredible ammounts of powers.

  24. Superman wins. Superman is the first real basic comic superhero akin to “spiderman’, “Hulk”, “Flash”… etc. (not cowboys, military heroes, fantasy books, etc.). He will always be #1.

Besides, he deserves it! Superman is “Captain America” for all the reasons they created Captain America, He’s Hulk for all the reasons Hulk was created, He’s a nerd like Spiderman for ditto, He’s Thor for the reasons Thor was created. Yeah, they explore storylines and reasons why heroes “are”… (mutants, gods and godlings, androids, etc.) but basically the creation is a hero and that hero is some noble, even anti-hero with a strong moral code, or superior meta human type that’s superman.

Superman will always be first and best.

P.S. writers are even now thinking up new explanations and ways superman adventures will unfold and new discovers for powers yet revealed or feats yet seen, so, they will eventually do something that will place Superman above all other heroes! With the “mageddon warhead” storyline they did and with the “multiverse in a book” storyline they did… even with the superman prime storyline they did and the mogul story line they did. Heck John Byrnes undone things from supes past and other writers re-introduced them later. I’m a writer and I love superman, so, I of course will reveal how he’s an Eternal (Kryptonian will be related to the inhabitants of Titan and under Kronos in a Marvel/DC crossover) and I will write that superman actual feeds off of power cosmic not just yellow sun. I will also show how and why he can actually enter the speed force after learning a few things and how his “good nature” just as Captain America’s “good nature” (which allows him to lift Thor’s hammer) makes superman a key entity in the universe and that if he gets with Dr. Fate or the Specter they will show him how he’s actually immune to magic or any dark arts (like silver surfer in his battles with Mephisto)…and finally, I will write in an episode where Lex Luther creates a cure for kryptonite (intended for himself since he figured he’d need it if he steals superman’s abilities) and somehow supes gets it, uses it, and becomes immune to all kryptonite forever. I will write these things!

    Superman is the best.

SUPERMAN PRIME ONE MILLION Powers and Abilities

    Powers:
The Gold Superman Prime is quite possibly one of the most powerful beings in the DC universe. During his travels and lineage, Superman Prime has acquired countless powers and abilities, though many of the abilities he has acquired are shrouded in mystery. During his time spent within the sun, his abilities have grown astronomically, though it is unclear just how much power he has obtained. Through his pact with the descendants of his own dynasty, he has been able to grant a large array of these powers to his successors.

    Abilities:
His abilities were amplified greatly during his time spent within the sun to unknown levels.

    Strength level:
    Presumed to be nearly incalculable.

    Weaknesses:
    None known.

  29. LMFAO. Yeah, ShadowHunter. You’re such an intelligent guy. Aren’t you the one who thinks Superman could beat Thor when he has full Odin Force? Or that he would also beat Galactus? Like anyone is gonna take anything you say about Superman seriously.

  30. Galactus has been showed at destorying lots of galaxies and fought and kicked the In-Betweener’s ass. Does Superman Prime have any showings?

  32. #34 Wild Bill says:

My problem is most of 1 million’s power seems implied, really. While his few on panel feats were impressive, Galactus himself also has an impressive list of feats. T

Also Hyperstorm turned into a snack for Galactus :P

Any sort of energy will do, Mr. Fantastic said something about how there isn’t enough energy in the universe to sate the big G’s hunger, so on occasion doesn’t hurt to chow down on lunch from alternate dimensions / realities.

MMMMMM so much power, I can eat it.

    Not really my freind.

Superman Prime one million is said to be only second to the Presence.

Superman one million is insanelly powerful, So powerful , that it looks like PC Superman 2.0
and Superman one million is a flea compared to the Golden Superman. and Superman one million has already Imp powers!!!

  35. #37 ShadowHunter says:

Gold Superman Prime is freaking close to the power of The Presence. Is Galactus close to the One Above All? I don’t think so. Rick, it’s funny how you act. You only answer sometime on this debate. Only to insult since you can’t debate anymore. I think you just don’t know how.
Wild Bill : Did Galactus has already eaten Gold Superman Prime? No. That means he would have to try first. Gold Superman Prime is considered as a god. Way stronger than OF Thor. Even Rune King Thor. If you keep claiming that Galactus could eat him, I never saw him eating any class of Superman. Galactus can eat energy but can he eat the energy of Superman? Never saw it happen. You said that Galactus has showed more feets than Gold Superman Prime. God! Doctor Manhattan has showed more feat than Gold Superman Prime and Galactus on this debate! Don’t make me laugh! By the way, Mr. Fantastic is talking about the Marvel universe. DC Universe got more powerfull beings. I can give you 4 names of people that can beat Galactus. Imperiex Prime, AntiMonitor, Emperor Joker, Krona, and way more!

It does not say anything about galaxies been destroyed and it shows something that is really unlikelly a galaxy. more like a vortex and a rock falling apart.

I don’t keep up with all of this, but I read on dc.wiki that Superman Prime 1 Mill, get his amazing power for hibernating in a sun for however long time.

It just seems that cosmic level entities of Marvel surpasses a star’s power level on many levels, I don’t see how Superman can measure to Galactus.
