Thor vs. Superman
The Mighty Thor and Superman are the heavy-hitters of Marvel and DC respectively, each of them arguably the most powerful hero in their respective universes. So its natural that this is without question the most discussed versus debate amongst comic book fans. No other versus battle comes close to being talked about as much than this one. Try to start a “Superman vs Thor” thread on any forum and the first response is sure to be: “Not this again”.Some of you may remember our “Top 10 Most Powerful Superheroes” list that we released a while back, where we made the controversial claim that Thor was the most powerful superhero of all time (Superman coming in at number three on that list). Months later we are still receiving emails either agreeing with us, or flaming us for that decision. Many fans cite Superman’s speed as the deciding factor in any fight between the two behemoths. Other emails claim that Thor’s magical powers would be enough to stop the man of steel in his tracks. So, the natural question is, do we still stand by our claim that Thor is more powerful than Superman? The answer is still “yes.” In this article we’ll break down the seven most common arguments and give you our take on them.
1. Super Strength
The claim has often been made that Superman is stronger than Thor. Many times on versus forums threads this claim is accepted as a given by both sides of the debate. We don’t concede that the Man of Steel is physically stronger than the god of thunder though. Thor has performed feats such as lifting the World Serpent, and once hurled the Odinsword, an enormous mystical blade, through a Celestial! Thor has also single-handedly matched the strength of the Hulk on numerous occasions (the Marvel Universe’s strongest character). Not only that but Thor is capable of entering into a state known as the “Warrior’s Madness”, which will temporarily increase his strength tenfold. Some of these feats have no true equivalent in the DC universe. We think at the very least, the two character’s physical strength is equal.
2 . Super Speed
This is Superman’s one true advantage in this fight. Superman is fast. We’re talking warp speed fast. We’re talking once around the entire planet and back before you can blink fast. You could easily make the argument that Thor would be lucky if he even saw Superman before he got pounded. But is Thor as slow as everyone seems to think? Unknown to many DC fanboys Thor can throw his hammer at the speed of light (See Thor#140, Thor#274). He can also swing it at TWICE the speed of light (Journey Into Mystery#102). In Thor -#393- it’s established that the speed of Thor’s hammer TRANSCENDS both TIME & SPACE. In addition Thor can appear anywhere across the Universe or other dimensions in just seconds (see- FF#339, and Thor#166). And, most importantly, Thor could, visually, detect objects that move at fantastic speeds (this happened when Thor was the target of artillery fire- see Invaders#33- and Avengers-#281- when he saw the speedy Hermes. And yes, I do need a life). Now if we accept that Superman can move at 99% of the speed of light, and that Thor can swing his hammer at twice the speed of light, it stands to reason that big blue is in some trouble. It’s true that Thor doesn’t use his super speed abilities often, but how many times have you seen Superman not use his super speed when he should have?
3. Stanima
Who can take more punishment, Thor or Superman? This is a difficult question. Thor has withstood a blast from Asgardian Destroyer. Superman has withstood a direct hit from a nuclear bomb. Thor has taken everything the Hulk could dish out. Thor also once took a glancing hit by a Doomsday Bomb that was capable of destroying an entire planet, and soon after that explosion he fell from space (leaving a crater miles wide) to a planet called Pangoria-see Thor#387. Thor has also taken everything that Gladiator (an arguably more powerful version of Superman) could dish out. Both characters have come back from the dead a couple of times. In my mind this one is a draw. Both characters have approximately the same stanima. The difference is Superman has weaknesses (i.e. Kryptonite, Magic, and the fact he is powerless without yellow sunlight) whereas Thor pretty much doesn’t.
4. Magic
Even the most diehard Superman fan would concede that Thor’s magical abilities would be an advantage for Thor. First, I would like to note that just because an opponent can wield magic, it in no way guarantees a win over the last son of Krypton. Superman has defeated countless magic users in the past, and so I have no illusions that just because Thor has magic powers and a magic hammer that he would automatically own Superman. That being said magic is just as lethal against Supes as kryptonite. Superman has no defense against it, and it can affect him greatly. Superman getting pounded by Mjolnir is the same as you and me getting pounded by a normal hammer. And consider the guy who’s swinging it. It’s Thor. The god of thunder. Not only that, but Thor’s lightning is magical too. Remember that just a single lightning bolt is equivalent to 15,000,000 volts of electricity and could travel over 224,000 miles an hour. The clear advantage here goes to Thor.
5. Super Powers
Before Thor inherited the Odinforce, the super powers of these two heroes were a little more even. Now there is absolutely no contest. Thor has a clear edge over Superman here. His magical hammer gives Thor the ability to control the weather, the ability to fly; energy projection and absorption; dimensional apertures; matter manipulation, as well as the most powerful of his offensive powers: the God Blast, and the Anti-Force. Superman is no push over in this department either, with the already mentioned super strength, super speed, as well as heat vision, x-ray vision, enhanced senses, and the ability to blow hurricane force winds from his mouth. But what is that compared to being able to summon an actual hurricane? Not only that but with the Odinforce Thor was then capable of feats such as reconstructing the Earth’s Moon, willing the Asgardian monster Mangog into nothingness, and by focusing his entire power into a hammer throw that even decapitated a Desak-occupied Asgardian Destroyer. Having accepted his heritage as the son of the earth goddess Gaea, he has recently been shown to be capable of opening chasms in the earth itself, and who knows what other abilities he’ll be displaying now that he’s done that.
6. Superman beat Thor in the Avengers / DC Crossover
I don’t want to spend much time on this one. Most fans of comics know how much weight we should give to crossovers. Besides, I personally have no doubt that Superman would beat Galactus in a crossover. He’s DC’s flagship character after all. Enough said on that one.
7. Thor has Thousands of Years of Combat Experience
This is a common argument used by Thor fans to claim that Thor would take down Superman. It seems fairly obvious. If I somehow gained super powers and a Viking Warrior somehow gained the exact same or nearly equivalent powers, most people would put their money on the Viking if we fought each other. Now imagine the Viking warrior was thousands of years older than me, and had been using his powers for all those thousands of years to battle trolls, giants, demons, robots, aliens, and gods, and I have only been using my powers for 20-30 years. It seems clear to me that the Viking Warrior god has a clear cut advantage over me in a fight. Again advantage Thor.
It seems obvious to me that Thor has a clear advantage over Superman in a fight. I don’t think that Thor is so powerful that there is no way that Superman could ever defeat him. But I believe that the majority of the time Thor would beat Superman in a one on one fight, assuming its not a fight to the death. If it is a fight to the death, then I think Thor would almost invariably win. So there you have it, the definitive answer to one of the most talked about and controversial debates in comic book nerdom. Brought to you by your pals at Old-Wizard.com.

Small examples of Odin’s power were he destroyed entire galaxies in his battles with Seth in an effort that shook the entire universe and tore at the very fabric of the multiverse. He, again, rattled across the entire universe in his battle with Forsung, which blew away planets like dry sand castles, and created heat so intense entire burning stars were created in its wake, as they blew each other to the ends of the universe. Odin battled Infinity in a confrontation that could be seen as far away as from Earth (Earth was just about destroyed), as the very laws of physics were being warped across the entire Unvierse (of course, Odin would eventually go on to lose to Infinity). Casual stuff such as teleporting all the people of Earth to another dimension, creating powerful artifacts, wiping out populations, creating a realm complete with false gods, waving his hand over a regular apple — giving the apple the power to warp reality over entire planets, or shattering the Sword of Doom can also be considered.

Yeah, Odin has some INSANE feats. I wonder who would win if all the Guardians and the GLs fought all of Asgard with Odin….
Any opinions?
March 19th, 2010 at 10:52 pm
Nice, still I’ll keep my guy. He snuff out a galaxy and that was a clumsy accident.
But nice indeed. That is why I can’t argue Modern Superman VS Full OF Thor.

Can I point something out here?
Since almost killing Galactus Thor has (not in order of occurrence but off the top of my head)
1) Created a forcefield that contained an explosion that would have destroyed 1/6 of the universe. We know that it would have, because another bomb detonated and did. Then Thor absorbed the energy from that explosion into himself, which of course killed him, but then one would expect that to. But Thor completely nullified the energy.
2) Absorbed the explosion of a bomb that would have destroyed the Black Galaxy, then instantly searched the universe with his godly perception and found a star that was dying. Thor then sent that energy FTL to another galaxy and used it to restore the star to youth ie to a state where it would emit energy as it did when it was still a young star.
3) Forced Atum the godeater to consume him, the took the Demogorge (Atum’s demonic form) over and drove Set out of 616 and might have actually killed him. Set has conquered multiple number realities and subverted them to his will.
This is just classic Thor and this is just several feats off the top of my head.
As for ODIN
Odin IIRC has had three galaxy busting battles, however I only recall two of them. The first was with Forsung the Enchanter for control of the Odinrod. At the time Asgard was still hovering in space in orbit around the Earth, so yes that would be in the 616 matter universe. Later Odin created a whole other universe and moved Asgard there after the Bifrost was destroyed. The other galaxy busting battle thar I recall was Odin’s final battle versus Seth of the Egyptians. This was in Thor v1, like issue 514 or so. It started in Asgard. Then spilled out across the multiverse. The narrative itself stated that their battle was damaging the multiverse itself (and of course destroyed galaxies). So the battle did more than damage 616, it damaged something greater.
When Odin was originally created by Stan the Man, he was an equal of Galactus (who was also much more powerful back then). Now since the 90s it seems Galactus has been getting punked way too often.

You guys never answered to one of my oldest post. During the crossover between Marvel and DC (When Krona decided to destroy universes and beat Galactus pretty much easily), why did Thor decided to give Mjonir and Captain America his shield to Superman if Thor is stronger than Supes? Don’t tell me that it’s non canon. I really don’t care. If Thor is that strong, why in the hell did Thor didn’t went after Krona instead of Superman? Is there a reason?
Alberto : Zeromage isn’t mentionning if the Superman of the debate is PC or not. I guess we can choose

As for people saying Superman has spent unknown no of years in Asgard.U should see what Clark Kent(aka Superman) has to say about Marvel’s Version of Thor. Here it is.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kilotwo/277565482/in/set-72157594341795296/
If U can’t read it.Here’s what it says:
“I’m used to being a skeptical reporter, but I’ve been forced to set aside my journalistic disbelief for this lightning-slinger. Wielding his devastating hammer, Mjolnir, the mighty Thor appears to be the actual legendary Norse God of Thunder.”
-Clark Kent
I guess DC’s version of Thor is a phony.Even Clark Kent says that Marvel’s version of Thor is the 1 and original.
Note:If any one has a complain about the Article/Profile of Thor, Please complain to Clark Kent(aka Superman) since he wrote the Article/Profile of Marvel’s Thor. Not me.
March 19th, 2010 at 12:40 pm
Out of curiosity Alberto, it says in that scan he is moving the planets FROM the dying galaxy, not the galaxy itself. Am I missing something? Either way its a very impressive feat.
March 19th, 2010 at 3:33 pm
@President Steve
Nope, is just the planets of a dying galaxy, no suns
March 19th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
@Reporter
Complain to Clark Kent.
Clark you did seem to forget, that DC comic first published a Thor character in the pages of Detectives Comics, BEFORE Marvel did, He had basically the same attributes as his version in Marvel U.
So YOU claiming Marvel U is the Original Thor in comics, is just a LIE, Marvel U Thor is definitely not the original Thor in comic books. It was DC’s
If you mean the real deal of Thor, none of them are, both are adaptations of the Norse Mythology.
PS.
Clark, you should be careful, on what you say on those cards, People tend to be really literal with those things, and please STOP BEING SO HUMBLE!!!
March 19th, 2010 at 6:26 am
@Alberto
I thought U ain’t gonna complain to Clark Kent?
To be honest, I don’t know why he acknowledge Marvel’s Thor as the real Thunder God instead of DC’s version of Thor? Its true both are adaptations of Norse Myths.I wonder what he sees in Marvel’s version of Thor?Hmmmmmmm
March 19th, 2010 at 1:16 pm
Assuming the fight takes place on Earth, this fight easily goes to Thor. Superman is limited to 99% the speed of light on Earth, or else he damages his surroundings. When he breaks the light speed barrier, he causes massive destruction. Unlike Thor, who can swing his hammer 3X the speed of light (at least!) with no side effects. Superman would never hurt innocent people to beat Thor. So Thor can swing his hammer faster than Superman can move on Earth. Anyone who says otherwise doesn’t know much about Superman. If the fight is in space, Superman has a further disadvantage. While he can now move faster, he needs to breath, and he can only hold his breath for so long. (depending on the comic….a few hours or a few weeks). Also, let’s not forget, Thor can teleport them both to a Red Sun star system (assuming he knew Superman’s weaknesses…but still, Thor has no weaknesses). Superman is also vulnerable to magic. Magic effects him just like everyone else. Want proof? Look at Superman’s fight with Black Adam. Black Adam’s punches FUCKED HIM UP. Thor also has the godblast. An attack so powerful it made GALACTUS run away! Thor can steal people’s souls. He can drain energy (solar energy anyone???). What can Superman really do? Punch, and eye beam? Thor has so many different ways to beat Superman its ridiculous.
Now I’ll grant that many times Thor doesn’t use all his powers. But if you want to go there, neither does Superman. How many times have you read a Superman comic, watching him get his ass handed to him, and wondered why he didn’t use his Superspeed? Or eye beam?
Thor has defeated the Sentry. He has also even killed him in a “What If” (Not canon, but still…). He has defeated Gladiator NUMEROUS times. The Surfer 3 times that I know of. He beat Hyperion with ONE PUNCH! So he has beaten Superman-like characters.
Anyone who says Thor can’t win this fight is insane.
March 19th, 2010 at 2:18 pm
Nick : You don’t even defend your arguments with scans. You just describe power that Thor could use against Superman. Let me tell you something : Superman has way more abilities than Thor has. For the energy drain, there is no proof that show that he can actually drain Superman yellow energy. For the god blast, it takes some time before he can use it. As you should know, Superman is developping a kind of resistance against magic, kryptonite and Red Sun radiation. It still hit him but not as much as before. Yes, Thor can swing is hammer but he will never have the time to do so. It takes him atleast 5sec to swing it to light speed. Superman could just hit him during this time. Superman is a wiser fighter than Thor too. I gtg for the moment, I brb later.
March 19th, 2010 at 2:32 pm
Talk about not backing your arguments up with scans…
Where do you get it takes Thor 5 seconds to swing his hammer to light speed????
March 19th, 2010 at 3:38 pm
Nick, first of its called heat or lazor vision not eye beams. And they have been proven to be hotter than the sun if i’m correct. Second, though Superman wont do anything to hurt people on earth, he will do anything to protect them. If that means moving the fight to a new desolate location so he can move faster than he will. Also (in space) did you not see that image of Superman BLOWING a star into an advasary? or freezing people with his breath? not to mention his hearing is so good he can hear peoples’ heart beating.. have you forgotten about those powers to? Or what about his strength. Superman is just as strong if not stronger than Thor and faster. Millenium, what does that mean? let me see, an alien moving faster than light with the strength to lift mountains and has beaten gods before will be pounding Thor within a blink of an eye! I think that well covers more than just speed and “eye beams”. Ive seen how you’ve given Thor the advantage through biased oppinion, now its time to listen to logic, reason, and common sense. Just FACE IT, Superman has just as good of a chance, if not better, of beating Thor as Thor has against him.
March 19th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
@Nick
On the space fight, you are wrong. OF Thor has been humilliated in space by RULK, badly. It seem his hammer does not have the spell any more. Plus Superman can move in space and He recharges with STARLIGHT, in space He gets an unfiltered sun radiation, In othe words, He becomes stronger, than on earth. On earth, yes He will protect the innocent. I wonder how He will react, when he finds out that Thor does not give a crap for mortal men in a fight.
And as stated in FF. THOR DOUBTS he can generate ENOUGH energy to scape a black hole, The most energy generated by Mjolnir is the God Blast. Superman has SURVIVED AND ESCAPED A DOUBLE BLACK HOLE. Does that means that Superman generates more energy than Mjolnir?
Actually onto this topic. Thor can destroy a planet WITH MJOLNIR, not his hands. Superman SHATTERS planets and moons with the SHOCKWAVE of his punches. and has even shattered time and space with the shockwave generated by his punches.
I actually wonder If Superman generates (not stores) more energy than Mjolnir, After all Superman is a living reactor.
Onto the magic thing, Are you aware, that In superman the man of steel #75 He fought against A “MAGICAL” DOOMSDAY, with the same powers as the original Doomsday but “magical” in nature, created by Mxyzptlk. His name was Bada Bing Bada Boomsday.
This was one of Mxyzptlk’s games.
So there, that will probably take the argument of magic away for a while
March 19th, 2010 at 4:25 pm

What does Rulk have to do with anything? Rulk is probably more powerful than Superman, considering he also killed the Silver Surfer and knocked out a Watcher. Rulk has pretty much defeated everyone in the Marvel Universe at this point (besides Galactus). But that shows what a moron Loeb is rather than anything else. Thor defeated him the second time. Also, your sunlight argument only works if he’s near a yellow star. There’s a lot of space out there.
And as stated in FF. THOR DOUBTS he can generate ENOUGH energy to scape a black hole,
hyperbole. Plain and simple. Unless we SEE him unable to escape a black hole, this statement is worthless.
The most energy generated by Mjolnir is the God Blast. Superman has SURVIVED AND ESCAPED A DOUBLE BLACK HOLE. Does that means that Superman generates more energy than Mjolnir?
Thor has CREATED a black hole (numerous times). He even made a wormhole once and tossed Gladiator (a Superman clone) into it like a sack of potatoes. Can you show me a scan saying that the Godblast is the most energy generated by Mjolnir? Even if it is, its able to stop Galactus.
Actually onto this topic. Thor can destroy a planet WITH MJOLNIR, not his hands. Superman SHATTERS planets and moons with the SHOCKWAVE of his punches. and has even shattered time and space with the shockwave generated by his punches.
Last I saw Superman could barely move the moon. Thor has shattered time and space too. In fact I can’t count how many heroes have done that. Big deal. Show me where it says Thor can’t break a planet with a punch? I’ve seen it stated NUMEROUS times “Thor and ____” exchanged planet shattering punches.”

And did superman WIN???? No. Mxy sacrificed himself to kill him. So no…you’ve proven nothing. I think I’ll believe the 1,000 other references showing Superman affected by magic.
March 19th, 2010 at 4:33 pm
Everyone who comes to this site seems to know what hyperbole is except Alberto. HILARIOUS!
March 19th, 2010 at 8:56 pm
Rick : Again, you have prooved that you can debate lol!
Nick : For earth, Superman already brought bunch of ennemies close to his Forteress. He would do the same to avoid any collateral damage. For the moon thing, Alberto posted a scan showing Superman moving the earth against.. god I can’t remember his name. He moved Krypton (yes, he had help) but Krypton is 3 times bigger than earth. Destroying a Sun eater that is almost bigger than Krypton isn’t enought for you? Again, I am coming back with that but Superman survived the blast of the Imperiex Prime. He survived in a fight between him and Superboy. That’s an incredible feat since Superboy is way stronger than him.
Let me just ask you a question Nick and Rick. Who’s stronger and who would win in a 1vs1 fight.
Thor or Superboy Prime?

@Nick
When was the lat time you pick a Superman Comic 199?
I have scans to prove Superman feeds of starlight and he is walking reactor. I doubt RULK can defeat Superman and I also hate Loeb
“And as stated in FF. THOR DOUBTS he can generate ENOUGH energy to scape a black hole”
“hyperbole. Plain and simple. Unless we SEE him unable to escape a black hole, this statement is worthless”
I do not see an extravagant exaggeration on Thor saying “I DOUBT MJOLNIR HAS ENOUGH POWER TO ESCAPE THIS FATE” He will be actually be doing the opposite of exaggerate!!!. He needed Help to escape the gravitational pull of a black hole, and he had not crossed the event horizon yet!!! He was unable to escape the Black hole by himself, You want scans???
“Thor has CREATED a black hole (numerous times). He even made a wormhole once and tossed Gladiator (a Superman clone) into it like a sack of potatoes. Can you show me a scan saying that the Godblast is the most energy generated by Mjolnir? Even if it is, its able to stop Galactus.”
Have never seen it. I know he can create portals that can be confused with black holes and wormholes? a boomtube is a wormhole.
I assume that God Blast is the most awesome blast generated by Mjolnir, because everybody says it is.
Able to “stop” Galactus. Yes, We don’t know up to what degree Galactus was Hungry or powerless maybe .10% which I think is SILVER SURFER level
“Last I saw Superman could barely move the moon. Thor has shattered time and space too. In fact I can’t count how many heroes have done that. Big deal. Show me where it says Thor can’t break a planet with a punch? I’ve seen it stated NUMEROUS times “Thor and ____” exchanged planet shattering punches.”
Superman barely moving a moon, that was 199?…
onto Thor shatering planets less talking more showing. Remember no hyperboles
“And did superman WIN???? No. Mxy sacrificed himself to kill him. So no…you’ve proven nothing. I think I’ll believe the 1,000 other references showing Superman affected by magic”
Did I say He win???
HE HELD AGAINST A MAGICAL DOOMSDAY, AS IN HE WAS ABLE TO FIGHT!!! WITH LITTLE OR NO EFFECT!!!
Magical punches are as effective as any other punches and magic is as effective as in any non magical beign.

Superman wrestled earth from Starbreaker and the sun’s gravity with the help of GL
Superman slow down the weight of eternity with the help of WW and GL
Superman lift a book with the multiverse inside with the help of Captain Marvel (this one is a metaphor, but can be confused with a Hyperbole)
I read somewhere that Krypton is 15 times bigger than earth

I find that a bit odd.Clark Kent has encountered Thor(DC).Meaning he should also acknowledge the Thor from his Universe not just Marvel’s version of Thor.I’ll show you another Marvel Vs DC Cards but this time, its Peter Parker(aka Spiderman) who will talk about DC Characters. Here’s what he says about Captain Marvel(DC)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/kilotwo/277565482/in/set-72157594341795296/
If you can’t read it, here’s what it says:
“I knew a Captain Marvel, but he was a lot different from this guy.Wielding the power of the ancient wizard Shazam; he’s got to be one of the mightiest mortals on the planet, but there’s a child-like quality to him, like he’s really just an overgrown kid”
-”Peter Parker”
When Peter Parker(aka Spiderman) made the Article/Profile on DC’s Version of Capt.Marvel, he acknowledged also the existence of another Capt.Marvel(Marvel Universe). He never stated that the Capt.Marvel from DC is the original nor did he mentioned that the Capt.Marvel from Marvel is the original. Therefore he acknowledged the existence of both Capt.Marvel(Marvel & DC).Why didn’t Clark Kent(aka Superman) made mention of the Thor from DC Universe when he made an Article/Profile of Marvel’s Thor?Even if Thor from DC made rare appearances, surely he should have said “I knew a Thor” like Peter Parker when he said “I knew a Captain Marvel.”Clark even stated that Marvel’s Thor appears to be the “actual”,legendary Norse God of Thunder. He actually thinks Marvel’s Thor is the real deal Thunder God.Don’t you find that odd?
Note:I know both Thor(DC & Marvel) are just adaptations from Norse Mythology.

GL can move faster than Superman (I’ve already posted a scan showing GL keeping up with the Flash, while Superman couldn’t. He can create Kryptonite (we’ve already seen him do it). He can out-slug Superman (he’s been shown to do that as well. Superman can mainly do what? As many other people here have pointed out, Superman’s best power is punching really hard. Reading through the debates here, and seeing the best the Superman supporters can do has only re-affirmed by belief that GL is much more powerful than Supes. (We’ve seen a questionable feat of him lifting a minature multiverse, and punching planets. All strength feats. He might as well be the Hulk. If the Hulk could move fast and fly, we’d have Superman). It seems to be the Thor side has been soundly winning this debate. Personally, I don’t think Thor could beat the Green Lantern either. GL is on the same level as heralds of Galactus like the Surfer. These are heroes who can do MANY MANY things. Not just move fast and punch. Sorry, Superman supporters, but your hero is overrated.
