NewSuperMarioBrosWiiIt’s been a busy year for OW. As many of our fans know we are very important people in the gaming industry. We know all the movers and all the shakers and when OW speaks the gaming industry listens. Not too many years ago we had to pull our support of Sega over an incident at E3. The details don’t really matter but we tried to pick up the check, a fight broke out, some small Japanese men got beat up, and we decided that Sega was a terrible company. Since then Sega has been in a steady downward spiral. Also, not to brag or anything, but it’s well known that we here at OW came up with the idea of Sonic the Hedgehog as a joke and a struggling game developer stole the idea for lack of anything better. Oh and one time we were at a strip club with the owners of Sony and Nintendo and gave them the ideas for the Playstation and the Wii simultaneously, but I’ll have to save that story for another day (it gets a bit raunchy, and as our fans know this is a family website). Needless to say, since then our consulting fees have skyrocketed.

A while back we wrote an article about how 2D gaming is better than 3D gaming, which it clearly is. We here at OW have been getting increasingly frustrated with the lack or creativity and push towards realism in games. To address this issue we made some phone calls and told Nintendo that we would have to pull our support if they didn’t rectify this situation. Fearing what in the industry is called the “OW Sega affect”, Nintendo acted quickly and came out with what is easily the greatest game to be released in the 2000’s. So here it is, finally the OW review of the new Super Mario Brothers Wii. After getting back to OWHQ from our holiday vacation our email, snail mail, and fax machine were flooded with messages. Granted a lot of it was our usual fan mail and another good portion of it was our usual hate mail, but mixed in were questions asking; ” I think I like this new Mario game but wanted to know what you guys think?”, “Hi OW, love the site, should I like the new Mario game?”, or “Hi OW, hate the site, should I like the new Mario game?” So to answer the biggest question on the gaming industry’s mind right now, yes you should and can (we give permission) like the new Mario game.

The new Super Mario Brothers Wii is a incredibly creative and infinitely entertaining masterpiece of gaming. Sony and Microsoft should take note as we are losing patience with them. The plot is pretty standard, the princess gets kidnapped, a consistent problem in the mushroom kingdom, and the brothers go after her assisted by two toads. Right from the start the game is entertaining the maps are reminiscent of Mario 3 though the levels themselves are more like Mario World minus all the dinosaurs. Each level is super creative and it is obvious that significant amount of time was spent on level design. Even when the levels get super difficult, especially world 8 you can’t help but think wow this level is awesome, despite the fact that you just died a million times.

During your pursuit of the princess you have to defeat each Koopling twice per world, and Bowser jr. a few times on the airship. Each of these boss battles are far more creative than anything in Mario 3 or Mario World. The fist encounter is in the fortress and is usually a simplified version of the final battle. Some highlights are fighting Iggy in the last castle of the jungle world and Ludwig in cloud world. To augment Mario’s plumbing skills against this band of turtle creatures, a number of Power-ups are available. The standard mushroom, fire flower, and Yoshi return, but with them come some new ones, the ice flower, helicopter hat, mini mushroom, and penguin suit. Each power-up is unique, fun, and useful. The helicopter hat, our personal favorite, allows you to fly when you shake the remote, another creative aspect of the game. The ice flower can diffuse some fire and turns everything to blocks of ice which can then be thrown at other enemies or smashed to pieces. The most interesting use is to access secret areas by freezing certain enemies in just the right place or floating up through water jets. The penguin suit is a much more powerful frog suit from Mario 3. It gives you extreme swimming power, ice flower power, you can run and slide, and let’s be honest who doesn’t look good in a penguin suit? Finally the game designers seemed to add a challenge to the game with the mini mushroom, which isn’t exactly a power up, but does allow you to run on water and go into tiny pipes. Our only complaint is that you don’t see Yoshi enough throughout the game and you don’t get to keep him when you beat the level with him.

The fun begins when you play with multiple people, actually the more people you play with the more difficult the game becomes. Everyone gets in everyone’s way and death rates quickly mount. ZM and myself beat the game after a few days with considerable swearing, threats, and tons of laughs. Unlike the earlier Super Mario Brothers games, where even in two player mode you are basically just playing one player games, this time you are all in the level at the same time. What’s worse is that you get into each other’s way, can pick each other up, throw things at each other, kill each other, and generally make even the simplest level turn into absolute chaos. Yoshi also becomes more fun with multiple players as you can eat your friends and then spit them out where ever need be. Another version of the multiplayer game are the battles, the coin battles being the most fun in our opinion. Here all the chaos makes sense, you have to kill the other players and get the coins. We honestly spent hours playing this part of the game sometimes getting very few coins because most of our time was spent trying to murder each other.

Sadly had this game existed when we were children ZM and myself would have been the fat losers we described in out hardcore gamer list. OW has flexed it’s mighty arms and world is turning back towards fun 2D games instead of realistic wastes of graphics. The game derives it’s strength from it’s simplicity, the graphics are crisp and fun, and the game play is fully enjoyable. The only confusion is why two random toads come along for the adventure instead of one of the other cast of characters. The toads can become a little confusing in the multiplayer games with all the color changes and what not (especially when they both have afire flower or an ice flower). Some reviewers criticize the game because there isn’t an online way to play. To them we say “get real friends, you losers.” Half the fun is yelling at each other while you’re in the same room. If that’s your one complaint about the game you’re only complaining for the sake of complaining, and you probably have no real friends.

Nintendo need not fear, OW will continue it’s support for the time being, but our expectations have been raised. We hope Nintendo follows up with a new Zelda game on the Wii with the same format as Link to the Past (and why not make that a multiplayer game also). Sega on the other hand continues to be on our shit list and will still not be allowed to make a new system. For now they are denigrated to making games for their one time biggest competitors until we decide otherwise. As for the other game produces they should take note of the power we here at OW wield. With a single swipe of the OW sword companies fall, lives are changed, and fates are decided. We hope the age of realism in games is in it’s death throws. If not we might have to make some decisions, no longer will OW sit idly by while terrible games like Pokemon, Sonic the hedgehog, and Killzone 2 are made. Gaming industry you’ve been warned!

Well, I played some time and it was pretty good. But I got bored of playing the other ones so I guess I would have been bored after playing for a week.

ShadowHunter is the same guy who thinks Superman can defeat Galactus.

Emerald Magus is the same guy who thinks the Green Lantern can beat anybody. Get a life kid. Come on the Superheroes debate and post that. I haven’t seen you posting again in that debate. Sounds like someone doesn’t have anymore arguments to bring…

  4. Let’s see if the sales figures bare you out, BERSERKR:

    Wii – 53.39 million

    Xbox 360 – 34 million

    PlayStation 3 – 27 million

As far as I know, these figures are BEFORE Christmas. And I’ve heard that NSMBW has increased Wii’s sales dramatically.

Trent : Does that change anything? Wii doesn’t have exclusives. The Wii is a console for kids. You saw the graphics? It’s a shame for a Next-Gen Console. I don’t care about the movement, etc… The PS3 has the Sixaxis. It does a good job and a bunch of other stuff like the camera to use while playing Eye Of Judgement. The game the most awaited is God Of War 3 and no, it’s not a Wii Exclusive. I don’t remember the Wii having a game like Call Of Duty…

    @Trent

I can’t believe i have to say this again and again with every argument with a fanboy, SALES do not a good THING MAKE!!! by that logic, Justin Timberlake and Nickleback are better bands than Opeth, Amon Amarth, Nevermore, Acid Mothers Temple, Swans etc, absolutely LAUGHABLE! And movies Such as Fast and Furious or The Scary Movies are better than No Country for Old men or There will be blood, gimme a break.

  7. LOL…You’re the one claiming that the Wii has no good games. You’re telling me the Wii can almost equal the sales of the Xbox360 and PS3 COMBINED and have no good games? You’re a joke.

Also, Opeth sucks. Let’s look at the highest selling bands of all time:

    Beatles: 600 million albums

    Elvis: 600 million albums

    ABBA: 370 million albums

    Michael Jackson: 350 million albums

    Queen: 300 million albums

These are all great artists. Opeth is trash. How is it possible the same country that gave us ABBA, Roxette, Ace of Bass and the Cardigans also gave us Opeth?

Oh and also, No Country For Old Men was boring as fucking hell.

  8. Justin Timberlake has only sold about 50 million albums, so he is nowhere in the league of greatness.

Yes of course i am because most people, the people of the mainstream society are fucking MORONS!!!!!!!!!!

And Those are all great bands, besides maybe Micheal, not my thing, But Critics tend to dissagree with you on the Subject of Opeth, its the number 1 rule of life, people are stupid, of course there is alwas exceptions to the rule.

And again, i DON’T hate the Wii, i HAVE one, but the fact remains i barley touch it due to the lack of quality games, not saying they dont have any, just not as much as the other two systems.

  11. #11 BERSERKR says:
    March 19th, 2010 at 10:16 pm

And movies like No country are boring to people who are stupid and can’t understand a film or appreciate the acting, writing, directing etc, what are some of your favorite movies and Bands?

  12. ShadowHunter:Graphics? LOL.
Trent, ABBA, while OK, is not a great band.

  13. @avi: How is ABBA not a great band? Not many bands can match the number of hooks that they have written.

    @BERSERKR:

    My favorite bands are:

Queen, Rush, Pink Floyd, Dave Matthews Band, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

As for movies, I like Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the Original Star Wars trilogy, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Godfather, the Bourne Trilogy, and the Harry Potter Movies.

(also liked The Mist and Serenity).

Personally, I can tell you I’ve probably played the New Super Mario Wii game about 20 hours for 2 weeks straight and I’m not even close to being tired of it. That game alone is worth spending $300 on a Wii for.

    March 19th, 2010 at 11:20 pm

Well i cannot fault any of your Movie or Music tastes except maybe your dislike for Opeth and No Country for Old Men :P

I still prefer Mario Galaxy to NSMB

  15. No question Super Mario Galaxy is a great game, but if that game is a 8, then NSMBW is a 10.

  16. #16 BERSERKR says:
    March 19th, 2010 at 11:39 pm

But Mario Galaxy was something Different, NSMB is just like any of the past 2D Marios but with Multiplayer, while it is a very fun game, I didn’t enjoy it as much as Super Mario Galaxy and neither did all the critics across the world, looking at the reviews.

  17. You need to seriously try the coin battle mode. I can’t tell you how much fun that is.

  18. #18 BERSERKR says:
    March 19th, 2010 at 11:47 pm

I’ll get into it more once i am done with Assassins Creed 2.

  19. My friends and I have also been obsessed with coin battle. With 4 people its almost as fun as Bomberman 2 was back in the day.

Here is a prefect example of how STUPID mainstream society is and how critics definitely know what they are talking about a helluva lot more.

Peoples choice Awards Favorite Film……TWILIGHT! UGH the humanity! oh what a world, what a world!

  21. Trent, I used to love ABBA, but I just… I can’t listen to them anymore. They’re not horrible, but they’re not great.

  22. And DMB are among your favourite bands? Laughable.

  23. What’s wrong with DMB? Those guys are world class musicians.

  24. #24 BERSERKR says:
    March 19th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

d0b definitely not my taste either avi

  25. #25 BERSERKR says:

    DMB :P

  26. Someone tell me what is the big deal with DMB?

  27. #27 BERSERKR says:
    March 19th, 2010 at 8:03 pm

There is no big deal, i’m saying i don’t like them, i dont get it either :P

  28. I wasn’t talking to you, but OK.

HAHAHAHAHHA, I knew it! OW has a wet dream with something like this, the NSMB Wii version. Yes, I love this game, thus, you’ll need remember the Sega Failures all the time? Carpe Diem baby!!!

ShadowHunter, Wii has his own version of Call of Duty, anyway, I hate the moderm FPS, all the fucking same history and levels, the most boring gameplay, the fucking autohealth, the shitty muscle one-army man-marine-space-marine guy. Where is the clasic Doom Style or frenetic Quake gameplay? I bored of the same type of game whit no other change on it’s title, KillZone, Halo, Resistance, Call of Duty, all the Same and bored game 3 hours game. And the online, the only who save them from be a total fraud, full of loosers and teenagers who insult everyone.

  30. #30 ShadowHunter says:
    March 19th, 2010 at 11:06 pm

Kurono : Than play your Wii. The only problem with what you said is that we never hear about any of Wii exclusives. God Of War 3 is the most waited game. Uncharted 2 won the game of the year and the game with the best graphics. Did a game ever win awards on the Wii? I don’t hate the Wii but it just get boring. The only good game on the Wii was Super Smash Bros Brawl and Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles.

You hate Call Of Duty? Well don’t play it. Just know one thing. There is more people playing COD online than all of the games on the Wii.

  31. The Wii is by far the best system in the world. Wii sports resort is probably the most fun thing to play I’ve ever seen. Me and my friends played basketball for 8 hours straight last weekend.

  32. #32 ShadowHunter says:
    March 19th, 2010 at 5:46 pm

Paul : I’ve played with my friends Little Big Planet in one weekend more than 8 hours. You should try it. With 3 of your friends, that’s the most funny game.

Wii sprts got boring real quick, same goes for Wii sports resort.
