Mail Bag: June 6th, 2008
Even though a couple of months have passed since we published our controversial Worst Video Game Systems of All Time list, we still continue to receive plenty of hate mail from Sega fanboys about it. This week we decided to address some of their concerns…
Tom writes:
What is is with you and your praising on Nintendo. Your list of worst consoles (Virtual boy would be higher, but it’s nintendo….), Worst gaming sites (Sega-Nerds), Worst characters (Sonic). Yeah, I can understand that you are a dumb ignorant kid that adores Nintendo, and that you never even heard of other consoles, and make a list by putting a few Sega consoles on it. But your list of worst gaming related sites….you just picked Sega-Nerds, because its Sega and they laughed at your for your ignorance with the top 5 worst consoles, didn’t you?
Dear Tom,
I hate to be the one who points this out, mainly because it’s probably more insulting to you coming from a “dumb ignorant kid”, but there is a critical flaw in your question. How could we have simultaneously have never heard of other systems and write about them. Its an interesting little problem. I’m not calling you dumb, or ignorant for that matter, but it would seem that a man of superior logic (such as yourself) would have seen this and perhaps corrected it. Despite this glaring error, you may have inadvertently stumbled onto an interesting point. Did we, in fact, add Seganerds to our list because they laughed at our “ignorance”? The answer is no. We added Seganerds to our worst websites list in hopes of waking them up from their ignorance. You see Tom, Sega is a failed system, from a failed company that produced many other failed systems and half-baked ideas. The fact remains that Nintendo has always been the innovator, the idea men if you will, and has always made the better systems and is the better company. That is not to say that Sega had nothing, there are a few descent games, generally speaking loose copies of Nintendo ideas, so it is okay to like Sega. As long as you and all your fan-boy friends recognize the fact that Nintendo is better. There is no argument that can be made to the opposite. I truely do not understand how people deceive themselves into thinking that. So to summarize; Its okay to like Sega, we don’t care, but just be sure you understand it is the inferior product, always has been always will be.

I got an arguement for you: You guys suck! hows that. I love Sega.
March 16th, 2010 at 4:49 pm
sega really wasnt that great thats probably why there is no next gen sega system think about it
March 16th, 2010 at 4:52 pm
It was Sega’s choice to bow out of the hardware race doesn’t mean they were bad it was just a decision they thought would be best to make.
oh and old wizard is a gay sega hating nintendo jockey
I love Nintendo, but my dick isn’t in Miyamoto’s ass like yours is.
March 16th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
I think I come back to this webpage daily just to see what stupid thing you guys are going to say next.
One thing I’ll say is, you guys are funny. Wrong. But funny.

Zing.
March 16th, 2010 at 5:40 pm
As much as I dislike hearing negative things about Sega. . the internet offers freedom of opinion. . . You don’t like it. . don’t read it. . .. jackass.
BTW love your stuff.
March 16th, 2010 at 6:17 pm
My understanding is that, at the time, SEGA was faster and more affordable than the Super Nintendo. The system definitly took advantage of its speed even if that was reflected by how quickly the company died out. Only it’s curious that what seemed to hurt the company the most was “non-licenced distribution” of SEGA Dreamcast games.
Really, where would we be without Super Monaco GP?
March 16th, 2010 at 6:25 pm
the reason sega dropped out is the dreamcast didnt sell they lost buisness cause sony and nintendo muscled them out not their fault they designed a crappy system with not much original stuff
March 16th, 2010 at 6:48 pm
Who cares which is faster? Super Nintendo had all of my favourite RPGs: Super Mario RPG:Legend of the seven stars, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III, etc.
March 16th, 2010 at 6:52 pm
Sega Genisis all the way…
March 16th, 2010 at 6:58 pm
The SNES had the better games. (Zelda: A Link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy, Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario RPG, Super Mario Kart, Terranigma, StarFox 1, Street Fighter, Earthbound, Super Star Wars, Super Empire Strikes Back, Super Return of the Jedi, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Country and Donkey Kong Country 2)
How can the Sega Genesis possibly beat all those games?
March 16th, 2010 at 7:06 pm
The Dreamcast was a great system that was, at least, moderately ahead of its time. It failed for three reasons:
1. Piracy. It was easy to make copies of games to play on the system. You could even watch movies on it(in small parts, but it was possible).
2. The eventual release of Playstation 2. Many people(fanboys) refused to buy the DC because the Playstation 2 was “going to be” so much better. I can’t tell you how many times I heard that, which helped put *me* off of buying the system until Shenmue was released. That game helped me see the light, but the fact that the series was never finished brings me to….
3. Poor track record with system support. The Sega CD, 32X and Saturn all suffered from poor support. That had to linger in the back of people’s minds when the DC first hit store shelves. I have my own horror stories, which I’ll leave out of this post.
Looking back at the Dreamcast, it should have been around for a few more years. It was a step in the right direction for consoles in general, and a bright spot on Sega’s resume. They just shot themselves in the foot.
March 16th, 2010 at 7:07 pm
Seriously guys? As gaming journalists this is the nail on the coffin when speaking of your dying credibility. Nintendo were ALWAYS the innovators? Sega had numerous products that were way ahead of its time. Remember the Sega Channel? Yeah, that’s right, online play on the Sega Genesis; something that was nearly unheard of back in the day. The Sega Nomad? A rather bulky but very playable portable Sega Genesis!! That was exciting for gamers like me back then! The Sega CD, Saturn, Game Gear, and Dreamcast systems were also all way ahead of their time in terms of technological potential. All had some great games as well. Additionally, all were technically superior to any Nintendo product that was currently out. Sure not all were without their flaws, but even Nintendo had some major flaws that even you fail to mention when speaking of your beloved company – Blowing into the cartridge for 10min to get your damn game working anyone?
You seem to be oblivious to the fact that even though Sega failed in the US, they had quite a success over in Japan up until the Dreamcast. Japan had a number of successful consoles that failed over here in the same manner as SEGA did: Turboduo, PC-Engine, and Neo-geo. All of them were by far superior than anything Nintendo had out at the time, they were just harder to find and much more expensive. The reasons you give for hating Sega are similar to what happened to these other great gems of gaming. I’d like to hear your thoughts on these “failed” consoles as well oh guru of gaming.
March 16th, 2010 at 7:11 pm
Innovators? Sega was one of the first to come out with the cd drive, which Nintendo tried, but failed with sony for their snes. Sega was the first game console (non-computer) system to have internet play for the genesis, and saturn, plus the sega channel. Sega set the standard for shoot ‘em laser gun games with House of the Dead. Sonic was more next-gen and hip at the time against Mario (love Mario tough.) Saturn was the most powerful 32 bit system, but developers didn’t know how to access its full potential. Sega had the GD-ROM for the Dreamcast, which holds 1 GB of info, while the N64 carts held less than 100MB. Sega had keyboard and mouse support, & seganet. VMUs were very innovative, and the closest thing Nintendo could think of to copy it was hooking up another game system (GBA) to the Gamecube to do the same stuff. Copiers. Sega had an anolog 3d pad for the saturn. RAM expansion was possible for the saturn way before Nintendo had their idea to do it. The ONLY thing Nintendo has going for them is Mario, and a few other franchises that keep them ahead. If i wanna play with a remote, I’ll play with my dvd player, oh wait, wii can’t even play dvd movies. Sorry Nintendo, you are not the innovator at all, not even a close 2nd, Sony gets that prize.
March 16th, 2010 at 7:13 pm
I think people take Old Wizard too seriously. Gamesta, I doubt they even consider themselves gaming journalists. There’s no “news” on this site. They make lists with the intention of either getting people mad, or making people laugh, or maybe both. I think this site is funny, but I wouldn’t take anything they say seriously, or let it change my opinion on a system I love, like the Dreamcast.
March 16th, 2010 at 7:14 pm
Their response:

Look, to avoid confusion, I’m not a Sega Fanboy. I fact, I’m a Sony and Nintendo fan.
I haven’t said Sega was better than Nintendo, but it isn’t as bad as you make it look like.
The dreamcast didn’t fail, it just couldn’t handle the hype of the PS2. All by all, the sales of the Dreamcast were good, but Sega made a loss. They just couldn’t handle it anymore. Sega has been the innovater. I, even though I prefer the NES, am sure the Master System was a better system with many possibilities, but lacked third party support.
Console fanboyism is bad, and this site is it at its worst.
Let’s make it simple for you.
NES
-In response, Sega makes superior Master System.
Master System
-In response, NEC makes Turbografx
TURBOGRAFX
-In response, Sega makes Mega Drive
Megadrive
-In response, Nintendo makes SNES
SNES
-In response, NEC makes TG-CD
TG-CD
-In response, Sega makes CD system
Sega CD
-In response, Nintendo tried to make their own, but a bit of a screw up with Sony
-Response to that, Sony begins PS1
until the PS1, consoles just have been responses to eachother.
Nobody can say the CD was a hit in America, but it was to some degree in Japan. Nobody can say the 32X was a hit, it failed.
But Saturn didn’t fail in Japan, neither did Dreamcast, and it didn’t fail in the US
All by all, every console has it flaws and its strong points.
My conclusion; Or you are blind fanboys, or you want to provoke fans of other consoles.
March 16th, 2010 at 7:14 pm
Their response:
“you just picked Sega-Nerds, because its Sega and they laughed at your for your ignorance with the top 5 worst consoles, didn’t you”
yup
P.S.
I believe you take video games, and probably life in general a little too seriously. Lighten up.

Wild Bill hit the nail on the head:
“I think people take Old Wizard too seriously. Gamesta, I doubt they even consider themselves gaming journalists. There’s no “news” on this site. Wild Bill is a genius. Somebody give that man a medal.
March 16th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
I’ve never seen so many pissed off by a blog…EVER. People, this is one person’s opinion. There is freedom of speech on the internet. If you don’t like it, don’t read it. There are probably neo-nazi webpages that receive less controversy than this site.
March 16th, 2010 at 7:36 pm
i have a simple question if sega was really that great why did it die out its fans should of kept it going btw nintendo isnt ma thing i just think thatold wizard has somewhat of a point BUT they were way to critical to say that a sega system was the worst system ever
March 16th, 2010 at 7:38 pm
Amen Adam. Amen!

Simply put, the dreamcast DID fail. I worked at a videogame store for 6 years, I’ve seen the entire rise and fall of the dreamcast. The problem was simply getting publishers to make any games for it. The only publisher doing anything was Sega Sports.
The biggest reason why publishers shunned the Dreamcast? Sega’s reputation for pulling the plug on systems far too early. After several publishers lost money making games for short lived systems like Sega Saturn, Sega CD and 32X. They did not feel Sega had the follow-through on a system and therefore did not invest the proper amount of time and money in titles.

“They make lists with the intention of either getting people mad, or making people laugh, or maybe both. I think this site is funny, but I wouldn’t take anything they say seriously, or let it change my opinion on a system I love, like the Dreamcast.”
So what’s the point of coming here if the site is one big joke? The fact that Old-Wizard has these opinions is why I keep coming back. I disagree and throw out a few arguments. What gets me is that they never retort with any educated response. It’s all opinion and no fact. And anything claimed as fact, is so off-base you cannot help but to question their credibility.
Old-Wizard needs to decide what exactly they are here. A joke site? If so why post responses in order to defend yourself like this one? Come out and just say it then if your site isn’t to be taken seriously or not, and stop wasting all of our time! Some of us are gamers through and through and honestly, as pathetic as it may sound to some, we take this stuff seriously. Why? Because for some of us its our childhood, our passion, its the memories when we can look back at a time in our life where we didn’t have bills, full-time jobs, and your common place stresses.
So, guys, if you don’t want be taken seriously say so! Because these failed attempts to defend yourself only serve to make you look more like idiots. However if we were under the notion that this is pure sarcasm, we’d laugh about it and go on our merry ways. And if thats the case, then fess up and just admit you like SEGA. Or at least show some respect to them goddamnit. They’ve earned a spot in gaming’s wonderful history; whether you like them or not.
March 16th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
Gamesta:
I would point you to their “About Us” page.
“Our staff is a crack-shot team of super gamers that break the bounds created by the word uber. We have a staff of 9 people, 9 companions to challenge the nine ringwraiths. However, when you line the staff up, you can only count two humans. That’s due to each of the two having 4.5 split personalities inside their heads making a total party of 9 which is a good number, the reasons being the aforementioned above. So two humans, 9 minds, and one internet connection brings you the most comprehensive all encompassing internet miracle in cyberspace.”
These are the kind of people you are dealing with here.
March 16th, 2010 at 8:02 pm
Gamesta, do you really think the Sega Genesis had as many good games as the SNES?
March 16th, 2010 at 8:06 pm
Here’s the problem, while the Genesis was faster, better hardware does not a good game make. The best machinery in the world is totally worthless if the games that are played on it aren’t any fun to play. The key lies in the software. This is where the battle is won by the Super Nintendo.
March 16th, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Truer words were never spoken. Super Nintendo’s game catalogue was amazing. Zelda, Super Mario, Chrono Trigger, FF, and many others give Nintendo a decisive edge.
March 16th, 2010 at 8:08 pm
No I never said it did. I actually love the NES and SNES more than the Sega Genesis, but I give credit where credit is due.
Wild Bill: Nah, still don’t buy it. I read up to “Super gamers,” lol’d, then skipped to Old-wizards responce here.

Personally I think laughing is a great reason to come here. Besides which, even if you don’t like their opinions, that’s what they are…OPINIONS. Why do I come here? Because I read opinions that I wouldn’t read on any other website. Say what you want about the site, but its DIFFERENT.
March 16th, 2010 at 8:13 pm
i would love to join your staff
March 16th, 2010 at 8:13 pm
The real problem here is NOT whether or not Nintendo was/is more successful than SEGA. Any real gamer already knows that Nintendo smashed SEGA on all fronts.
How about you address some of our arguments we made against your claims that SEGA “copied” Nintendo and Nintendo were the forerunners of innovation during our golden age of gaming? Stop creating new arguments to avoid writing an educated retort with facts… yes I said the “f” word!
March 16th, 2010 at 8:21 pm
Let me point you to a modern day example. First, consider what are the differences between the PS2 and the PS3? Now, consider the differences between the Gamecube and the Wii. Which company is pushing the limits of gaming? Nintendo makes great GAMES. The graphics between the Gamecube and Wii aren’t all that different. They are more interested in innovation. Look at the games for PS. All very realistic. (GTA IV is a prime example). Most modern companies, and unimaginative gamers consider a great game to be one that is REALISTIC. Nintendo doesn’t care about this. How realistic is Mario?
Now, go back in time. Which game do you think was more innovative? Mario 1, or Sonic? There is no question which game was more innovative. Sonic copied much of Mario 1’s game play and mechanics. That is undeniable.
Nintendo had its misses. Virtual Boy, and the N64 (Many won’t agree with that, and I don’t want to get into that argument right now). But Nintendo was constantly at the forefront of one thing…making games.
March 16th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
Right now, there is no question Nintendo is the leader in innovation. Back in the day, I think it was pretty equal up until Sega tanked. But before that I think they were neck and neck.
March 16th, 2010 at 8:31 pm
See now thats what I’m talking about. A real response! I’ll agree with you on that. I assume your speaking of Super Mario 1, and I whole-heartily agree that that game revolutionized gaming with its innovation. Especially the platformer genre. Sega capitalized on it to an extent, but in honesty they didn’t do a good job. If only Sega had truly copied Mario’s formula though, Sonic may have been a better game. Okay probably not.
However in Sega’s defense Sonic wasn’t popular for it platformer style gameplay as Mario was. And the only thing Sega was accused of copying back then was the idea for a flagship mascot such as Mario. Mario and Sonic were both innovative in their own ways. Mario for its simplistic yet impressively playable platforming, and Sonic for making full use of the Genesis’s speed.
But I will agree, Mario was definitely innovative. And yes it was more innovative than Sonic, but only in its own respective way.
March 16th, 2010 at 8:32 pm
From the Old Wizard response to the email:
“I hate to be the one who points this out, mainly because it’s probably more insulting to you coming from a “dumb ignorant kid”, but there is a critical flaw in your question. How could we have simultaneously have never heard of other systems and write about them. Its an interesting little problem. Despite this glaring error, you may have inadvertently stumbled onto an interesting point. Did we, in fact, add Seganerds to our list because they laughed at our “ignorance”?”
Here we go again with Old Wizard not taking anything seriously. Making fun of the author of the original email is the sort of childishness I’ve come to expect from this site. Grow up.
March 16th, 2010 at 8:37 pm
“But I will agree, Mario was definitely innovative. And yes it was more innovative than Sonic, but only in its own respective way.”
Okay, to the next point. To quote our Top 5 Worst Consoles List:
“There are many reasons why the Sega Genesis is the worst video game system ever released. For one, it was because of the moderate success of the Genesis that the video gamer had the bear the terrible systems that came after it, from the 32x, to Sega CD, to Dreamcast, and to Sega Saturn.”
This is probably the ONLY argument you can make for the Genesis being the worst system ever. Is is logical? Yes. Does everyone agree? Of course not. You will never see this argument on any other site, or probably ever hear it from anyone, but again, that’s why people read our site. We have opinions no one else has, and we present them with our odd sense of humor. If you want to see a worst consoles list with Virtual boy #1 and Jaguar #2 and so on, check out the eight million other lists out there that are all the same. Agree or disagree, we make people think, and maybe even laugh.
March 16th, 2010 at 8:52 pm
The thing is, those other 8-million sites have list only consoles we are familiar with. With well over 100 gaming consoles released in the US, Japan and Europe combined its ridiculous to call the Genesis the worst! The Sam Coupe in europe? The Playdia in Japan? And the US had arguably worse consoles ofcourse.
I’ll agree your site is “different,” but just be careful because gimmicks can only get you so far.
March 16th, 2010 at 8:57 pm
I’d rather be playing my sega than reading this site.
March 16th, 2010 at 8:57 pm
To add one more thing, I urge you to give the Dreamcast another try. The ratio of good games to bad was extremely impressive. Even for its small library. The Dreamcast holds a special place in alot of gamers’ hearts despite its demise. I say it all the time, but every gamer should own a Dreamcast. If not for its collection of amazing games and arcade ports, but for its incredible homebrew capabilities.
I’d hate to think that because of your hatred for Sega you’ve missed out on legendary games such as Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia(the DC was far superior than the GC version).
The Saturn too… Panzer Dragoon Saga? Dragonforce? C’mon! Your truly missing out on some great experiences! Pick yourself up a japanese version and BOOM you’ve unlocked the prestigious opportunity to play what is possibly the largest collection of the greatest Shmups known to man! Radiant Silvergun anyone?
March 16th, 2010 at 8:59 pm
Everyone here should take a page from wild bill’s book.

It really is amazing how people on the internet fail to see that name-calling isn’t a way to argue. Tsk, tsk. Not that I agree with the case you’re making dear Old Wizard, as -for example- Genesis / MegaDrive was quite an impressive commercial success…
March 16th, 2010 at 1:33 pm
I believe Brian gave the best explanation as to why Sega failed: “Sega’s reputation for pulling the plug on systems too early”
That being said, the Dreamcast could have been a hit if it weren’t for the impossible claims made about the PS2.
I would like to answer Gamesta’s question: “do you really think the Sega Genesis had as many good games as the SNES?”
Yes. Absolutely. As I always say, “while the SNES more than likely had the best games, the Genesis had a larger library of great games”
To elucidate: Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, Zelda.
Although I would have an onerous task trying to think of any Genesis game that matched these games, the Genesis had a larger library of great games, including:
Aladdin – superior to the SNES version
Alien Soldier – most people love it, but I find it a little overrated; still real fun
Beyond Oasis (aka Story of Thor)
Comix Zone
Crusader of Centy (aka Soleil)
Dynamite Headdy
Ecco the Dolphin
Golden Axe
Gunstar Heroes
Herzog Zwei – first RTS
Landstalker
Light Crusader
Mega Bomberman – better than Super Bomberman
NHL series
Phantasy Star
Pirates! Gold
Ristar
Road Rash
Rocket Knight Adventures
Samurai Shodown
Shadowrun
Shining Force
Shinobi 3: Return of the Ninja Master
Skitchin’
Sonic series
Streets of Rage
Strider
Vectorman
Wonderboy
X-Men 2
Yep. The Genesis has a mighty list of great games – and while I’d still have a hard time thinking up a list to match the three SNES games I listed, the Genesis had a larger library of great games.
March 16th, 2010 at 1:41 pm
Ahk. Forgot some great titles:
Contra: Hard Corps
General Chaos
The Lion King – some prefer the SNES version, but as soon as I switched I noticed immediately that the SNES version was less smooth and less responsive
ToeJam & Earl: Panic on Funkotron (second game; I really don’t like the first)
Anyhow, if you ever decide to get in on these great titles you’ve missed, here’s a list of must-haves:
Gunstar Heroes
Road Rash
Shinobi 3: Return of the Ninja Master
Golden Axe II
Streets of Rage II
Mega Bomberman
I would add Sonic, but chances are you either already have it or would rather not play it.
See you next time.
March 16th, 2010 at 2:24 pm
Hi, I am just letting you know I like dicks up the bum.
Caio!
March 16th, 2010 at 5:15 pm
im just sayin maybe if the ps2 and every other system didnt sweep america off their feet sega coulda been great
March 16th, 2010 at 6:24 pm
Pingfa – I didn’t ask that question, Old-Wizard did.
But you did lit some great games. If I had a dime for all those nghts playing General Chaos with my friends…
On a personal note though, I still believe the SNES had the larger collection of better games. But that debate is for a different thread.
