quake4_detail.jpgMade by Ravensoft, the classic franchise returns, and as usual, it’s Quake’s multiplayer that saves the day and will keep this game on your hard drive for months to come. Quake Four’s campaign itself isn’t as good, but it’s worth playing through anyway. The Quake 4 storyline picks up where Quake 2 left off (Quake 3 Arena didn’t have a single-player storyline): with the Space Marines fighting the Strogg (an alien race who are much like the Borg from Star Trek, only more Goth), this time on their home planet of Stroggos. You take on the role of Corporal Matthew Kane, a member of the elite Rhino Squad, as the Space Marines attempt to annihilate their alien nemesis. Unfortunately for you, your landing craft gets shot down in the middle of trench warfare, and you’re separated from your unit. Afterwards, it’s off to the races as one superior officer after another sends you off to retrieve someone, destroy key locations, and infiltrate deep behind enemy lines. Sometimes you’ll be accompanied by game-controlled team members – usually a technical officer who can repair your armour, and/or a medic who can heal you up to full health.

    • Comic Book Review: Justice League of America Issue #16

Justice League of America issue 16 is still keeping the bar high for a series that has failed to disappoint in its short run thus far. This is Dwayne McDuffie’s fourth issue since he took over the writers chair. I’ve been enjoying his work on JLA thus far but i was unsure of his past credits. After a little research I found, much to my surprise, that he wrote Dethlok, a mini-series that still stands as one of my favourites. The artwork is still being handled just as well. Joe Benitez’s artwork keeps the story alive with great action and he continues to draw some of the best facial expressions I’ve ever seen.

Have you have ever paid $2.99 to get kicked in the nuts? If you purchase this issue of Superman you may as well because that’s about how enjoyable it is. This issue starts a new three part story titled “Insect Queen.” The story is actually paying homage to a classic figure that originally appeared in Superboy back in 1965. While most of the other titles in the DC universe are following or tying into the Countdown story Superman is unfortunately off in its own world.

        • Comic Book Review: World War Hulk Issue #5

wwh5finch1.jpgThe first thing I noticed about World War Hulk #5 was how terrible the artwork was. This is perhaps the worst Romita art I’ve ever seen. It was sloppy and inexorably sketchy. Not only was the artwork irritating, but the storyline was abominable too. The issue opens up with Mr. Fantastic on his way to killing Iron Man (Tony Stark) thanks to the Hulk’s obedience disk, and then seemingly without cause, the Hulk deciding to spare them, with Mr. Fantastic’s mace hitting the ground beside Tony’s head. So he decides not to kill the Illuminati after all, which was okay, but then why the hell did he give a thumbs down at the end of issue #4? Did he get confused about the signal? Was he planning on laughing at the expressions on their faces? In any event, when Rick Jones takes this as a sign that he was right and the Hulk wasn’t a killer, the Hulk responds by saying that although no one on Earth died at the hands of Warbound or himself, he plans on destroying New York City and leaving the Illuminati to their shame. Remind me how were the Illuminati wrong again to send the Hulk into space?

pacman.gifOver the course of my quasi-centurion life I have dabbled with various substances to no true good effect. My brain being semi-addled as it is, it still doesn’t help me answer the question: “What the hell is Pac-man?” Off the bat you are playing as a 2-D profile of the Wal-Mart smiley, traveling through a darkened labyrinth consuming balls while being chased by four coloured specters. As if that wasn’t trippy enough the specters each have different names. Despite the flashback-inducing imagery, the game is highly addictive. There is a certain thrill in evading ghosts and a merciless retribution found when it comes to eating them. Hours can be spent challenging yourself to attain high scores and greater level achievements. Can you pass though the ghosts around this corner? Can you evade the Blinky and Pinky trap?

ff2.jpgWalking into the movie theater having seen the trailer for The Fantastic Four 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer about 30 times, I was as giddy as a school boy. My anticipation for this movie had slowly grown to epic proportions ever since I first found out the surfer would be in a live action feature film. I re-read all my Silver Surfer comics, spent hours trying to unlock the surfer in Marvel Ultimate Alliance for Xbox, and I even broke out my Silver Surfer action figure in numerous staged battles between him and Beta Ray Bill on my living room floor.

world-war-hulk-most-powerful-superheroMarvel Comics has a new crossover series going on right now called World War Hulk. The casual comic book fan may be wondering why Marvel would create a crossover series with a simple-minded character that utters stupid phrases like “Hulk smash!” (Hey, it could be worse, he could say “It’s clobbering time!”). Anyway, most hardcore Marvel fans know the Hulk has great potential to be a really fun character to read. I personally had been steering away from Hulk comics for a while due to the stupid storylines that had become commonplace in Hulk comics recently. How many times is the Jade Giant supposed to fight dumb characters and then run away because Bruce Banner feels bad? So, after reading the Civil War crossover I began wondering where the heck the Hulk was in this mess, since I hadn’t been reading Hulk comics for a while. Glancing at my stacks of comics, I noticed that he been tricked into a space ship by four members of the super hero group the Illuminati (Reed Richards, Iron Man, Dr. Strange, and Black Bolt), and then rocketed into space. Eventually he ended up on the distant planet Sakaar, dressed as a gladiator. Well, that sparked the ole interest, and I began reading what has been one of the best crossover comics that I’ve read in a while.

windows_vista_desktop.pngAttempting to install and use the so-called newest, latest and greatest version of Microsoft Windows is like having a migraine headache, combined with sleep deprivation, and intense hunger, all while having a rare South American strain of the flu. Even if you are someone who is somewhat familiar with installing a Windows operating system, consider yourself a n00b when attempting to install Windows Vista. Sure, it looks flashy and nice on the outside, but under the hood lies a beast with sharpened fangs, out to cause you hair pulling frustration.
