The traditional list of overrated songs include songs that are patently overrated.  This list however will feel the need to make evident those overrated songs that aren’t as obviously overrated to the casual listener.  That being said, this list will piss people off because there will be songs on here that the reader will think are timeless or classic.  This list will debunk the mythology placed on some of these songs by showing their boring quality, their average quality, and their tricks that make them seem better than they actually are.  Some of the “best bands of all time” are on this list.  This is not to say that we are condemning the bands, but just the specific songs, so take care before the commenting is in defense of the band rather than the song.

With the broaching of pop music into art in the 20th century, it unfortunately burdened itself with it’s spatial nature.  While this space would allow for some of the most classic genres of music (e.g. Motown, Britpop, Rock), it’s flexibility allowed it’s opposite and sometimes unequal reaction in genres of music that found it’s success within Pop’s flexibility, and not the core of artistic quality.  In this list, we will highlight these music genres that have stained the great name of Pop music in the name of it’s own individuality, it’s own difference, without remembering the soul of Pop music.  There will be an underlying hope throughout the list of a the recognition of the forgotten soul of Pop music.

There are so many great bands, past and present, who never quite get the recognition they deserve. Some attain moderate success in the underground or blogosphere, but just can’t crack the mainstream. Thanks to the digital music revolution, I’m sure you have all heard of at least a few of these bands. A lot of the music here is familiar, but because of a band’s “scene” or preconceived notions they have been massively neglected by the populous. I love music, and could write about crap I like/write every day, but reading about unknown bands (or bands whose names conjure grimaces) can be painful. It hurts to learn. I am prepared to be berated by negative comments, but I ask this: After you anonymously slam this list, PLEASE include your own top 10 underrated bands list so I (we) can all see what we are missing. Consider this list the first comment, I guess.

The music video medium has swept music into a completely different form. Music was first intended for the ears. Combining the visual with the auditory reflected one of the biggest transitions for art in western society. With the popularity of the visual medium was the difficulty in being able to separate the visual from the audio, and often the audio would gain greater status because of the visual, when often not warranted on the music alone. While this has been the case for many bands and many fans of those bands, this is not to say that there hasn’t been creativity and nuance in the music video that has enhanced the musical experience rather than work as a crutch for it. In this list, we will account for these greatest videos as signatures of the possibilities in the medium. Believe us when we say that these are definite diamonds in the rough.

Backing vocalists are a valuable asset to every successful musical act that wants to incorporate harmony and texture in their songs. Some might say their efforts go unnoticed within memorable musical performances. From pop, rock, Motown, and to folk; backing vocals carry an essential element that can create an aura of breeziness, seduction, supernatural phenomena and can make a song’s feel and message extenuated.

The 10 greatest songs of all time. This was definitely one of our most difficult lists to make. With a subject that is considered as subjective as music, it’s hard to make any top 10 list about anything musical. We’re going for the gold though and listing what we think are the top 10 greatest songs of all time. We had a list of 50 songs and from those songs, and then narrowed it down to these top 10. What was left off this list was more than difficult to omit. Sometime in the future, we will have to expand this list to a top 50 and maybe even a top 100 to do justice to all the great songs that have passed over our ears in our lifetimes. We tried to be both objective and subjective when making this list. We couldn’t fill this list with a bunch of Rolling Stones and Oasis songs, nor could we simply put “Let it Be” as one of the greatest songs of all time. This list is both partial and impartial, if that is even possible. We will let the reader decide.

I came to a realization after our last music article entitled “The Top 5 Musical Countries“. One of these insights was that many people don’t understand parody, which is disheartening when making lists that sometimes try to be playful for entertainment’s sake. The other insight I came across was that some people know absolutely nothing about music, but for some reason feel entitled to make an opinion on it. This later insight is what will be covered in this list. God bless Video Gamers and their opinions because they are always somewhat informed (besides those who don’t read an article but just come on the site to say “epic fail” with no reasoning).

The 20th century of music saw a shift from the opulent and sophisticated modes of classical music, to music more as a mode of self-expression. The classiness of classical music saw its demise with pop music that was able to be communicated to anyone whether rich or poor. Who would capitalize on this medium the most? Which country would deliver the best music in this new medium? In this list, we will go through the top 5 music countries of modern of times. Unlike other lists, this list was easy to write. The choices came quickly. Some people will obviously be angry at a couple of the omissions on this list, but nonetheless, we speak with a conviction that will rise above the rabble.

Plod rock gains a new meaning

Oasis’s previous album “Don’t Believe the Truth” was a return to form of sorts for Oasis. Noel Gallagher’s impeccable songwriting was matched with a creativity missed since “Standing on the Shoulder of Giants”, even as this later album had its obvious missteps. With the new lineup firing on all cylinders with “Don’t Believe the Truth”, the Oasis fan was ready for the next album that would take them into a musical peak. We kept hearing about thousand piece orchestras layered over each other and grooves that resembled the best of Madchester circa 1990. The new songs were going to be reminiscent of “Columbia” off of their debut album “Definitely Maybe”. With Dig Out Your Soul, Oasis certainly hit a groove, unfortunately it’s a groove as dry and plodding as a rotting piece of wood. With Dig Out Your Soul, Oasis are on autopilot. This can be good for some bands, but definitely not for Oasis, who publicly and consistently pride themselves on antiquity. What Noel Gallagher fails to realize though, is that the justification for antiquity in music can become an antiquated notion itself. This is the sound of “Dig Out Your Soul”.

After releasing the Top 10 British Bands of all time and the Top 5 Swedish Bands of all time, it was only a matter of time before we released a “Top 10 American Bands” list. Sticking to bands within our generation helped narrow the long list of bands on our original roster, which was more like the top 1000 American bands. Luckily, we rethought our list after a fateful computer crash. As usual, this list has nothing to do with chart positions or albums sold, simply what we like. Since we are always right, take note, dear reader, and go get whatever you might not have from this list. Kisses fu%#ers.
