Top 10 Real Life Lessons We’ve Learned From Video Games
Spending 50% of our day playing video games must be for a reason. Beyond the pure enjoyment we get from playing the greatest games of all time, there is the endless amount of lessons we’ve learned from the games. Who would have thought that you could learn real life lessons from an 8-bit game? It happened though when we played games as diverse as Super Mario Brothers to Master Blaster. Looking back, games like these changed us in more ways than just starting a video game website. They taught us lessons on how to live, and how to go about the world. In this list, we will go through these real life lessons that we’ve learned from video games. Whoever said you can only learn life lessons from school and books was wrong, these next ten reasons will prove it.

Top 5 Super Metroid Bosses
Super Metroid is one of our favorite games here at Old-Wizard for reasons that are too numerous to list here. One of the reasons why the game was so great was because of how memorable and nefarious all the bosses were. This was especially true of the bosses of Super Metroid which were of course augmented by the most freighting soundtrack in the 16-bit era. Super Metroid was full of bosses and mini-bosses galore, so there was a large group of characters to choose from. Some of the difficult omissions were the beastly Crocomire and the evasive Spore Spawn. Nonetheless, we feel these next 5 bosses were the best in the series and will be remembered throughout all of gaming lore. -
Top 5 Video Game Swords
The video game sword took the world of fables and put them into real life with the gamer in actual control of the sword. There were plenty of swords throughout video game history, but only a few great ones. Many swords in modern day video games are too big and complicated. And some of the swords are just plain ugly. Can the effeminate hero of FF7 really hold that huge sword? So this list, we’ll go through what we think are the top 5 best swords in video game history. These swords stood out for their power and memorability, while others appeared silly. It’s not a coincidence that these next swords came from the greatest games of all time. -
Top 10 Street Fighter Characters
Street Fighter was arguably the most important fighter series ever made. It’s either Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat; it’s useless arguing which one was more important because how how much they both influenced the fighting games that came after them. Street Fighter has always had a place in our heart and we wanted to celebrate all the best characters to come from the series. There are many great characters from Street Fighter 2 all the way through the later editions, but not everyone can be listed in a top 10 of all time. We could easily make a top 10 worst street fighter characters also, and put characters like DeeJay and Guile on this list for their lack of fighting skills and the goofy disposition of the former. That’s for another list though. Right now, we’ll focus on the best characters in the Street Fighters an arguably the best characters in fighting game history. -
Top 5 Poker Players
Welcome to Old-Wizard’s first foray into the poker world. When not talking about video games or our absolutely subjective love of music, we’re usually trying to bluff the shit out of each other in $5 dollar poker tournaments. We’ve both been playing a lot of poker lately, and watching it even more. Of course, this made us think of doing a top 5 poker players of all time list. Watching these pros, it hard to believe how some players can read other players’ cards on every hand. While we don’t have this skill, and probably never will, we thought it was a fun idea to celebrate the best in the game. We have learned a lot from these next players, and they might just make us waste our bankrolls at the casino soon.

Old-Wizard Interviews the Angry Video Game Nerd!
In this segment, Old-Wizard interviews the The Angry Video Game Nerd, who’s notorious on the internet for his thoughtful and sometimes crass videos on retro games. Today, we sat down with him to discuss what we have in common and what some of his favorite and least favorite games of all time are. We acted like school girls over Zelda Link to the Past, and talked about random thoughts such as who who would win in a fight between Spiderman and Darth Vader. All in all, we found that we had many things in common with the AVGN. We both agree that both the SNES towers over the the Sega Genesis (this conclusion shouldn’t be a surprise to Old-Wizard readers). -
Top 10 Most Addictive Games
You know these games. You can’t put down the controller, you walk to go to the bathroom and you have vertigo from looking at a screen too long, your mother used to yell at you saying “stop playing that damn game”! These are the products of the most addicting video games. In this list we will go through the most addicting video games of all time. Many to choose from, many to eliminate, many obvious choices. These are the games you would play into all the hours of the night and then go to bed just to get enough rest to play them immediately in the morning. You couldn’t get away from these games, and for this reason they would be remembered as some of the greatest video games of all time.

Top 10 Final Fantasy Characters
As most readers of Old-Wizard know, the Final Fantasy franchise is one of our favorite video game series of all time. Its with that in mind that decided to make a list of our top ten Final Fantasy Characters. Many readers will notice that most of these characters are from our favorite game in the series, Final Fantasy 3. Final Fantasy 3, yes 3, is one of the greatest RPGs ever made. We here at OW refuse to adopt the Japanese numbering order. If anything Japan should have to re-write their numbering to fit the order of release here. You see OW bleeds red white and blue. And as every true American knows we are the greatest country ever. If you don’t think so we’ll invade you and force our culture on you. Japan should truly decide whether the numbering they use is worth it or not. We’ve invaded bigger countries for less. Anyway I digress. Final Fantasy 3 is awesome, it’s one of the first games where the bad guy actually wins (sort of) and it also has an incredibly interesting plot, which is why the majority of the next ten characters come from that game. -
Top 10 Games on the Wii
Its no secret that our favorite seventh gen console here at Old-Wizard.com is the Wii. As a matter of fact, you’d have to go back to 1995 when the PS1 was first released to find the last time that my favorite console wasn’t made by Nintendo. Of course its often claimed by people who don’t agree with us about the Wii that while it is innovative, it has no good games. This is a dumb claim. And its this claim that we’re out to disprove with this list. This was not a difficult task for us. We play these next ten games almost as much as the best games for the older Nintendo systems, and we’re certain that in time these games will prove to be timeless classics and will make it difficult for anyone to say that the Wii “has no games”. -
Top 5 Hardest Levels From Mario 3
Remember the time when game designers cared more about making impossibly hard jumps and difficult enemies to get past in video game levels instead of putting all of their effort into making pretty-looking 3D worlds where you wander around aimlessly in? This golden age of video games hit its peak with Super Mario 3. Mario 3 is arguably the best video game ever made. But not many people remember that it also had some of the toughest levels in any video game on the NES. It won’t be surprising to anyone who’s ever played this epic game that World 8 dominates our list of “Top 5 Hardest Levels From Mario 3″. From the insane speed and of the tiny mini-airships, to the confusing maze inside the Mini-Fortress, if you play through World 8 you’re sure to break a few controllers in frustration. Most people would resort to using a P-wing or a Cloud to beat these levels. Those who didn’t are sure to agree that these five levels as the hardest levels from SMB3.
