  In this next list, we’ll explore who we think are the top 5 video game makers of all time. When making this list, we didn’t consider companies who had at one time or another also made video game consoles (i.e. Nintendo, Sega, and Playstation). One can certainly make the case for Nintendo as being one of the best video game makers of all time, but we didn’t want to consider the video game makers who also owned stock in the console market. There were many companies to choose from. The top 2 on this list were no-brainers though. They were the first companies to come to our mind when we were initially thinking up this list. The amount of memorable games conceived by these next companies gave much more than sales to the video game market. They gave an endless amount of entertainment and lasting memories to the avid game player.

• Top 5 Hardest Video Game Castles

  Castle levels have been some of the most exciting moments to come from the video game medium. Going from outside levels to incandescently designed castles was always a nice change in scenery. The enemies changed, the music changed, and most importantly, the mood changed. In this article we are not simply delving into the quality of castle levels though. We are delving into the hardest castle levels in the video game medium. There were plenty to choose from. At first, we wanted to make this a top ten hardest castles of all time list, but upon second thought we decided to change it to a top five. There was a logic to this. The five castles on this list we felt to be much more difficult than the other difficult castles making the rest of the top 10 list. The lack of consistency between these five and the other five made us cut out the other five we had in mind. We spent hours trying to master and conquer the castles on this list. Some of the staff here at Old-Wizard haven’t even beaten one of these levels. Only Zeromage has beaten them all, and we already knew beforehand that he wasn’t human. Here then are Old-Wizard’s top five hardest castle levels of all time.

• Top 20 Star Wars Characters

  Anyone visiting Old-Wizard.com must know that the three original Star Wars movies are some of our favorite movies of all time. Our appreciation does not always end in satisfied acquiescence though, as debate quickly occurs about what the best movie in the series is. Another debate that manifests itself in our nerdy Star Wars discussions is who our favorite characters are in the series. You’ll know if someone is a true Star Wars nerd by the fact that they immediately choose a minor character as their favorite. Wedge and Lando are typically immediate responses from the authentic Star Wars nerd. No one would be caught dead actually saying that Luke was their favorite character for fear of being ostracized from the Star Wars community. It’s as if you weren’t aware of all the discrete information in the Star Wars series by picking someone so obvious. With this in mind, we thought it important to not write just a “Top 10 Star Wars characters” list, but a “Top 20″ list so we could do justice to the not so obvious choices that are often ironically overlooked. Without further ado, here is our Star Wars list for nerds and faux-nerds alike.

• Top 10 Hardest Video Games of All Time

  Remember the first time you played a game where you couldn’t get by the first level no matter how hard you tried? Remember thinking to yourself that you spent 3$ dollars borrowing a game that was so difficult you wanted to return it and ask for something more tolerable? The staff here at Old-Wizard remembers these games like we played them yesterday. We remember all the controllers crushed under the weight of our throwing power. We remember the broken windows from the throwing of the controller at them. It wasn’t until the invention of the Game Genie and emulator programs that we were able to make any headway into the places we wanted to in these video games. We didn’t think that all of the video games on this list were difficult because we couldn’t conquer the first level though. Some of the games on our list hit points where we just gives up because we knew that it would take a year of practice to conquer the part. On top of this, one would have to go back through the whole game to get to the part that takes a year of practice to conquer. This was vexing and when one had the chance for using cheats, they were used, knowing that they would get them to where they wanted to go regardless of the pride lost in the apparent lack of skill. These next games then are the definitive most difficult games of all time for us. No games more than these have ever been as smashed after playing them.

• Top 10 Mega Man Bosses

  Is there a game with more recognized and appreciated bosses than the Mega Man series? Once one plays past the more hackneyed bosses of Mega Man 1, one is overwhelmed by the amount of memorable bosses in Mega Man 2 and 3. Both these games clearly make up the best in the series. While Mega Man 4 showed some strength in its boss creativity (Skull Man), once we got to Mega Man 5-8 the idea of specific elemental men to the ground with such monstrosities of “Centaur Man” and “Tomahawk Man”. When you look back at the bosses of Mega Man 2 and 3 specifically, you’re overwhelmed not only by how inspired the actual bosses themselves are, but also their respective stages and stage music. Flash Man WAS Flash Man’s stage, Snake Man was not just himself, but his stage which we will read about later. Mega Man hit its stride in these games not because of amazing graphics or overtly intricate story lines, but because of creativity and simplicity, combining a simple 2D shooter into a battle with all the elements epitomized by all the bosses that had to be cleared. One could make a list including every boss in the second and third installment of the series (except Top Man) but that would involve making no difficult decisions which is often the key in thinking about any “best of” list. The difficult decisions were made and we were left with these 10 bosses in the Mega Man series as the best.

• Top 5 Girls From Nintendo

  The Nintendo era introduced some of the most perfect women in video game history. The gamer felt compelled to save these damsels in distress in the hopes of being the hero they always saw themselves as.  But some of these women weren’t the fawning princesses we’ve come to know throughout the video game medium. You could actually play as some of them, and the ones that you could play as would became some of your favorite protagonists. This next list will go through the most memorable girls from Nintendo games. We could have made this list longer and included the girls from other video game franchises, but we thought the most important ones were on Nintendo games. When we think of hot video game chicks, we always think of these next five girls.  They are Nintendo’s very best women.

• Top 10 Most Powerful Superheroes of All Time

  Here it is folks, the biggest debate on the whole interweb. Never has there been a more well thought out argument for a completely non-existent thing. Which superhero could beat up which other superhero. Never has a group of people spent more time drawing graphs, doing calculations, making charts, and writing computer programs to prove that the hero they love is in fact the toughest. These people do more literature searches than a graduate student writing their dissertation on literature. One can only imagine what world problems could be solved if comic book nerds would instead focus this same energy on say; poverty, healthcare, the climate, pollution, the economy, childhood obesity, cancer, sudden infant death syndrome, racism, genetic disorders, violence against women, the melting ice caps, sending a man to mars, depression, solving Goldbach’s conjecture, creating a unified field theory, un-raveling the mystery of DNA, figuring out what happened before the big bang, resolving religious tensions in the Middle East, finding peace on Earth, making cleaner cars, sustainable energy, nuclear fission, getting rid of hippies, and the million other things that would make this world a better place to live in.

• Top 10 Worst Video Game Heroes of All Time

  The video game world has prided itself on it’s inordinate wealth of protagonists. Gamers would become attached to games solely on the personality of the protagonists. Somewhere along the line though, video game makers started creating heroes that were less than desirable for the game player to control. The gamer was confused on how these “heroes” were even able to make it past the designer’s desk.

• Top 10 Bands of The 90’s

  When one reads or watches a “traditional” best bands of all time list, the assumptions get unquestioned. What happens is that people who profess to be “music listeners” accept these lists without ever asking themselves “Why the fuck should I listen to anything VH1 says”. When one list “argues” for its content, others will follow suit without ever questioning the quality of the bands on the list. This being utterly lost and absorbed in the publicness of the “they” solidifies the image of bands and best bands for decades and maybe even centuries to come. For example, you will get a “traditional” barrage of answers on what the best bands from the 90’s are from people who don’t realize they are simply restating what they saw or read on the most public of public media.

• Top 30 Seinfeld Characters

  The staff members here at Old-Wizard are in unanimous agreement that Seinfeld is the best TV show ever created. While not ostensibly having anything to do with the prevalent “nerd” theme of the site, we can leap beyond the formal bounds of logic and make the connections regardless. George? C’mon, This guy has got to be the coolest uptight 4-eyed nerd we have ever seen on TV. Kramer? Who else in modern sitcoms has been described as a “Hipster Doofus”? Elaine? Only the nerdiest of nerds dances as poorly as Elaine does. The list goes on and on as nerds can be seen everywhere in the show from Newman to Babu. So while at first it seems like a “Top 30 characters of Seinfeld” list seems out of reach for the basic theme of the website, at closer inspection, it seems somewhat appropriate. Like all our lists, we thought long and hard about who would be included. For this “Top Characters of Seinfeld” list specifically, we had to increase the list to 30 after all the noticeable omissions we were making in the original top 20 list. Theoretically, we could have even made a top 40 list that would have included most of the minor characters in the Seinfeld series, but some of the roles were so small, it would be difficult to write anything on them, beyond their desiderate one liners. Being satisfied at 30, we present you with the definitive “greatest characters in Seinfeld” list
