Top 10 Real Life Lessons We’ve Learned From Video Games
Spending 50% of our day playing video games must be for a reason. Beyond the pure enjoyment we get from playing the greatest games of all time, there is the endless amount of lessons we’ve learned from the games. Who would have thought that you could learn real life lessons from an 8-bit game? It happened though when we played games as diverse as Super Mario Brothers to Master Blaster. Looking back, games like these changed us in more ways than just starting a video game website. They taught us lessons on how to live, and how to go about the world. In this list, we will go through these real life lessons that we’ve learned from video games. Whoever said you can only learn life lessons from school and books was wrong, these next ten reasons will prove it.

Top 10 90’s Sitcoms
Looking back on the 90’s with a slight feeling of cheesiness is nothing new, much like looking back at anything else from a decade before. This is no different with the best sitcoms of the 90’s. The humor comes across as cheesy, the characters come across as foolish, and we are given noticeable signifiers of what has become anachronistic for future sitcoms. Regardless of this inevitable fate, some of the shows could still be looked back upon as quality shows much like sitcoms from the 80’s (i.e. Family Ties, which is in our Top 5 80’s Family Sitcoms). The 90’s had it’s golden shows that would become permanently etched in the memories of those who lived through the decade. In this list, we’ll go through what we think were the best sitcoms from the 90’s. If your show is missing, don’t worry, there is place to comment and defend your choice below.

Top 5 Super Metroid Bosses
Super Metroid is one of our favorite games here at Old-Wizard for reasons that are too numerous to list here. One of the reasons why the game was so great was because of how memorable and nefarious all the bosses were. This was especially true of the bosses of Super Metroid which were of course augmented by the most freighting soundtrack in the 16-bit era. Super Metroid was full of bosses and mini-bosses galore, so there was a large group of characters to choose from. Some of the difficult omissions were the beastly Crocomire and the evasive Spore Spawn. Nonetheless, we feel these next 5 bosses were the best in the series and will be remembered throughout all of gaming lore. -
Top 5 Video Game Swords
The video game sword took the world of fables and put them into real life with the gamer in actual control of the sword. There were plenty of swords throughout video game history, but only a few great ones. Many swords in modern day video games are too big and complicated. And some of the swords are just plain ugly. Can the effeminate hero of FF7 really hold that huge sword? So this list, we’ll go through what we think are the top 5 best swords in video game history. These swords stood out for their power and memorability, while others appeared silly. It’s not a coincidence that these next swords came from the greatest games of all time. -
Top 10 Street Fighter Characters
Street Fighter was arguably the most important fighter series ever made. It’s either Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat; it’s useless arguing which one was more important because how how much they both influenced the fighting games that came after them. Street Fighter has always had a place in our heart and we wanted to celebrate all the best characters to come from the series. There are many great characters from Street Fighter 2 all the way through the later editions, but not everyone can be listed in a top 10 of all time. We could easily make a top 10 worst street fighter characters also, and put characters like DeeJay and Guile on this list for their lack of fighting skills and the goofy disposition of the former. That’s for another list though. Right now, we’ll focus on the best characters in the Street Fighters an arguably the best characters in fighting game history. -

Albino Humans
Anyone know what the KKK think of albino people? Either they venerate them for being the ultimate in whiteness or they hate them for being different. Or maybe its something different that I never heard of. Just a thought that came by me today. Not that I think about the KKK a lot or anything….

Top 5 Poker Players
Welcome to Old-Wizard’s first foray into the poker world. When not talking about video games or our absolutely subjective love of music, we’re usually trying to bluff the shit out of each other in $5 dollar poker tournaments. We’ve both been playing a lot of poker lately, and watching it even more. Of course, this made us think of doing a top 5 poker players of all time list. Watching these pros, it hard to believe how some players can read other players’ cards on every hand. While we don’t have this skill, and probably never will, we thought it was a fun idea to celebrate the best in the game. We have learned a lot from these next players, and they might just make us waste our bankrolls at the casino soon.

Old-Wizard Interviews the Angry Video Game Nerd!
In this segment, Old-Wizard interviews the The Angry Video Game Nerd, who’s notorious on the internet for his thoughtful and sometimes crass videos on retro games. Today, we sat down with him to discuss what we have in common and what some of his favorite and least favorite games of all time are. We acted like school girls over Zelda Link to the Past, and talked about random thoughts such as who who would win in a fight between Spiderman and Darth Vader. All in all, we found that we had many things in common with the AVGN. We both agree that both the SNES towers over the the Sega Genesis (this conclusion shouldn’t be a surprise to Old-Wizard readers). -
Mail Bag: January 10th, 2009
I’m not sure why exactly, but lately a lot of people have been asking us what our opinion is about the imminent end of the world. I’m not sure how many other retro gaming sites are getting emails about the upcoming apocalypse, but I’m willing to bet that the number is pretty low. I’ll have to ask the folks over at Retrojunk when I have a chance. Anyway, this week Sage answers one of the more detailed emails we’ve received on this topic.
