Happy Holidays
Happy holidays to all the readers of Old-Wizard. We’re off until the new year so you’re left with all our past articles and our Forums for your holiday reading and entertainment. We wanted to take this time to thank all the readers and visitors as you’re the ones that have kept us going through both the ups and downs. We have a lot planned for the future so stay tuned as the new year kicks in. As of right now, we’re relaxing from a busy year that has us burned out. There’s been a lot of arguments and controversy during Old-Wizard’s history. We think this is a good thing as it has made people think more and clarify their own positions on things as diverse as their favorite video game systems to their favorite songs of all time. Only by stirring the pot a little can readers be engaged in a way that they wouldn’t normally be in everyday life. We hope we’re making a connection to our readers with the style of our thought and writing. For now though, it’s time to relax and enjoy the holidays by taking some time off. We look forward to the new year and our readers continued passion for dialogue, agreement, and disagreement. -
2008 Brew Review
So this is a slight deviation from the previous two posts. As an avid beer drinker and sporadic (and largely unsuccessful) brewer, I wanted to share some of my favorite new (*or new to me) brews from this past year. Last year the wife and I took a month off and drove from merry New England to California and back again on a spiritual quest for local beer around this great country. We had no GPS, no computer, and no pre-planned maps of where we might end up, except our final destination: the Snowmass Chili and Brew fest in CO. If yo have any local favorites near you, or recommendations for a fellow beer geek, please post them in the comments. -
Top 10 Games on the Wii
Its no secret that our favorite seventh gen console here at Old-Wizard.com is the Wii. As a matter of fact, you’d have to go back to 1995 when the PS1 was first released to find the last time that my favorite console wasn’t made by Nintendo. Of course its often claimed by people who don’t agree with us about the Wii that while it is innovative, it has no good games. This is a dumb claim. And its this claim that we’re out to disprove with this list. This was not a difficult task for us. We play these next ten games almost as much as the best games for the older Nintendo systems, and we’re certain that in time these games will prove to be timeless classics and will make it difficult for anyone to say that the Wii “has no games”. -
Top 10 Songs of all Time
The 10 greatest songs of all time. This was definitely one of our most difficult lists to make. With a subject that is considered as subjective as music, it’s hard to make any top 10 list about anything musical. We’re going for the gold though and listing what we think are the top 10 greatest songs of all time. We had a list of 50 songs and from those songs, and then narrowed it down to these top 10. What was left off this list was more than difficult to omit. Sometime in the future, we will have to expand this list to a top 50 and maybe even a top 100 to do justice to all the great songs that have passed over our ears in our lifetimes. We tried to be both objective and subjective when making this list. We couldn’t fill this list with a bunch of Rolling Stones and Oasis songs, nor could we simply put “Let it Be” as one of the greatest songs of all time. This list is both partial and impartial, if that is even possible. We will let the reader decide.

Top 5 Hardest Levels From Mario 3
Remember the time when game designers cared more about making impossibly hard jumps and difficult enemies to get past in video game levels instead of putting all of their effort into making pretty-looking 3D worlds where you wander around aimlessly in? This golden age of video games hit its peak with Super Mario 3. Mario 3 is arguably the best video game ever made. But not many people remember that it also had some of the toughest levels in any video game on the NES. It won’t be surprising to anyone who’s ever played this epic game that World 8 dominates our list of “Top 5 Hardest Levels From Mario 3″. From the insane speed and of the tiny mini-airships, to the confusing maze inside the Mini-Fortress, if you play through World 8 you’re sure to break a few controllers in frustration. Most people would resort to using a P-wing or a Cloud to beat these levels. Those who didn’t are sure to agree that these five levels as the hardest levels from SMB3. -

Top 10 Most Underrated Video Games
There are many underrated video games. These games pass by the gamer without notice not necessarily because they’re below average games, but because they were never fully promoted. Other games however can be considered underrated because they’re considered below average in popular video game opinion. These next games we feel should not go unnoticed and should not be considered below average. Some of these next games could be considered in the greatest games of all time list, and they are. Whatever one’s reason for underrating a game, they will need to reconsider their motives after reading through this list and understanding the power of these next ten games. These next games are not only underrated in our eyes, but can be considered as lost classics.

Top 10 Problems with Modern Movies
It seems like every year movies are getting worse and worse. I used to go to the movies every week, and now I’m lucky if I go once a month. Not only are the movies today worse, but they cost more too. Since I make more money now than I did when I was a kid, I wouldn’t really care about spending a lot of money going to the movies, but it’s still hard to justify paying $10 to go and see Jumper. If you bring your wife or girlfriend with you, plan on spending over $40 (with popcorn and a soda) to see some shitty new movie. I wouldn’t mind if every new movie was as good as Dark Knight, but let’s face it, most new movies suck ass. You’re better off spending your $40 buying a full season of the X-Files on DVD. At least you’ll be entertained for a whole week, and you won’t have to sit next to some overweight guy who breathes really hard, or some little girl who sniffs every ten seconds while you’re watching them. So why do new movies suck? In this next list we’ll go through the top 10 problems with modern movies.

Top 5 Video Games You’re Currently Playing if You’re a Frat Boy
We all know the frat boy type. When they enter into college, it’s party time 24/7 along with everyone else who feels entitled to spend their parents’ money on frat boy activities. The frat boy needs to fit into all walks of his friends’ life, so if that means playing some video games then so be it. There’s a difference though between the traditional video gamer and the frat boy video gamer. The frat boy video gamer only plays games that tend to induce chest bumps and cracking beer cans over their head when successful in one of the games. It’s a rare occurrence when you find someone in a frat playing Final Fantasy 3 for instance. You can rest assured that they would be kicked out of their frat if the “head brother” found them playing a game with an actual dialog. -
Top 10 Worst NES Games
Everything in our past is nostalgic. We look back on our days of school, vacations, hell even arrests, with a strange fondness that seems to increase with age. The NES was definitely a breakthrough in gaming. We at Old-Wiz look back on it with a rose colored blindfold sometimes, but it wasn’t all roses. There were some horrible stinkers that we spent our measly allowances on back in the day. This week we took a break from trumpeting our youth to get cranky on the old NES for a spell, so here it is, the top ten NES crap-sticks. Enjoy.
