Ask Old-Wizard: Lord of The Rings Edition
This week we answer some of our readers’ Lord of the Rings related questions:
-
Mega Man 9!
It’s been eleven years since Mega Man 8. Whoever thought the original series was dead was dead wrong. Mega Man 9 will be one of the most anticipated releases for the Wii, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 for this fall. The promotional art for Mega Man 9 looks as poor as that for Mega Man 1. If all else follows suite, we will have a great game on our hands. Dr. Wily is at it once again as Dr. Light is blamed for world-wide reploid tragedy. The game follows the same design as the old Mega Mans with our blue hero fighting 8 reploids before entering Wily’s castle. There is a major twist to Mega Man 9 though. The first woman boss to ever battled will make an appearance in this Mega Man. Her name is “Splash Woman”. No one knows as of yet what she splashes, but we hope that it’s got nothing to do with her gender. Other interesting reploid names include “Galaxy Man”, “Concrete Man”, and “Plug Man”. We hope that Galaxy Man brings back memories of Gemini Man’s level. We will keep a close eye on this release as we always have love for the Mega Man series (check out our top 10 Mega Man Bosses of all time list). Maybe one of the bosses in Mega Man 9 will knock out one of the bosses already on our list.

Mail Bag: July 27th, 2008
It seems like every week we get some hate mail from a guy who calls himself MaximoDestructo (a clever play on DestructoMaximo’s name). This week Destructo decided to reply to one of his more venomous emails…

Top 5 Sega Games
Who would’ve ever thought that Old-Wizard would ever compile a top 5 Sega Genesis games article? More importantly who would’ve ever thought that Old-Wizard would put together any positive list about the Sega Genesis? Over the past couple of months, we felt like we’ve been too hard on Sega (not really, but a number of emails have asked us if there there were any Sega games that we actually liked). We thought about it for a while and reminded ourselves that the Sega Genesis did have good games. In this article, we will go through what we think the five best were. We still think the SNES was the superior system, but we are reminded that the Sega Genesis did had some good moments. (more…)

Old-Wizard Featured on Podcast!
Old-Wizard’s recent Thor vs Superman article has been featured on the Podcast “Slacker and the Man“. We both listened to the show over the weekend and we think that it’s great. These guys talk about everything from comic books, to science fiction shows, to various avian genitalia (a topic of great interest to us here at Old-Wizard). Be sure to check it out.

Comic Book Preview: Hulk #5
In case you haven’t heard yet, there’s a brand new Hulk running around smashing people in the Marvel Universe. He’s just like the regular Hulk, except he’s red and he gives off gamma radiation. Oh, and he uses a big gun. The Red Hulk has already defeated the Abomination, She-Hulk, Iron Man, the Green Hulk, and most ridiculously, knocked out the Watcher. Yes, you read that right, he knocked out the Watcher. And now it looks like he’ll be going toe-to-toe with everyone’s favorite Norse thunder god, the Mighty Thor in Hulk #5. -
Thor vs the Silver Surfer
As the avid Old-Wizard reader knows, a while back we released a “Top Ten Most Powerful Superheroes” list, and then last week we decided to defend some of our choices (especially in picking Thor as the number one most powerful superhero over Superman, which seemed to have angered many of our readers). You can read that article here. But as many emails pointed out last week, we never actually discussed why the Silver Surfer was lower than Thor on our list. Makes sense… Superman was number three on our list, while the Surfer was our number two pick. So this week we decided to break down the reasons why we chose to place Thor at number one on our most powerful superhero list over the Silver Surfer. This was actually the hardest decision that we had to make on the entire list, and we argued about it for hours (well, we’ve been arguing about this one since we were in high school) but we finally decided on making Thor the number one most powerful superhero of all time. And here are the reasons:

Sega Gate! Chief Sega Fan Boy Doesn’t Own a Sega!!!
It is a well known fact that we here at Old Wizard aren’t big fans of Sega. Its number one on our top 5 worst consoles list. We have Sonic on our worst video game characters list, and we have fielded piles of hate mail from the hordes of unkempt, uncouth, and rather ostentatious Sega fan boys. Last week we addressed a few video responses to these lists and launched a rather secret, and very dangerous undercover investigative report (Read that post here). From what we surmised their ‘leader’, as much as any one man can lead this rabble, is known only by his moniker SonicmanO, and his hard-line views include Nintendo burning, Playstation mutilation, and Xbox smashing, among other ignoble activities. What we have learned will shock the frail minds of Sega fan boys everywhere. The very leader they have lined up behind, the man they charge into battle with (and have lost every battle with time and time again), does not, nor has he ever, owned a Sega platform! (more…)

Nintendo Wii best selling console in US
Are we right or are we right about Nintendo? The Nintendo Wii is now the highest selling video game console currently in the US. It has shipped over 666,000 consoles in June alone (which proves even the devil loves Nintendo). The Wii totals are currently about 11 million shipped in the US. The Wii now takes over Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s Playstation 3 as the most popular video game console system. What has made the Wii so successful?. We go into this in our top ten video game systems of all time, but how about the highly unique and intuitive controllers? How about the games themselves that reach out to all audiences (Who could have ever thought that there could be a perfect bowling game in Wii Sports Bowling?) Or finally a new Mario game (Super Mario Galaxy) on par with Mario 3? Nintendo has done it again with the Wii creating a video game system more powerful than a fully operational Death Star. What’s next for Nintendo? Only the future can tell. For now though, Nintendo once again controls the video game market.

Noel Gallagher ties Video Games to Stabbings
Everyone who visits Old-Wizard from time to time knows how much we prop up Oasis like most nerds prop up Star Wars. But our love for Oasis may have found its limits when Noel Gallagher criticized video games for creating all the high crime rate in the UK. In the past year, knife crimes have been up big time in the UK. Could this all be because of video games like Noel Gallagher thinks? First off, what video games are out there where the main weapon is a knife and theme of the game is knifing people? Violence in video games has become much more elaborate than the puny blades belonging to the likes of Arthur from Ghosts N’ Goblins. Is there a correlation between violence in video games and any type of violence whatsoever? Often, politicians and role models alike will try to find scapegoats for spikes in violence by blaming the video game market, but the evidence is always inconclusive. We love Noel Gallagher, but we suggest he sticks to writing great songs rather than being a social critic against video games. We’re pretty sure he has never actually played any.
